Keywords:
Irish (40)guitar (911)guitar arrangement (1)traditional (65)
Description:
My arrangement for guitar of two Irish tunes. This is of course not completely original work, but I'm really interested in the art of arranging Irish and other folk tunes.

Thanks much, but how about some critique? Unoriginal, poorly recorded, crappy guitar, etc.???

Good skill &mdash 07/30/07 - 08:57:32 AM
even though irish music is not my favourite type, i think this sounds really clear and just really nice. Maybe at times I get confused cause at times theres complicated parts off the beat and it makes it sound like its going off time which its not. but thats me cause i dont listen to this type of music. Would be perfect for a film or something, brilliant! Plus, it is played with amazing skill!

dont be so tough on your self :) i am not a master at guitar, so i can not tell, what you do well and what you should improve, but to my laic ears your playing sounds very fluent, smooth and easy. i like very much those triplets or what is called that ornamentation you play, they sound like bells to me. very clear and bright sound. very nice. i would maybe complain little about the length. little short to me. because irish music sessions always go for hours and hours and hours and hours.... ;) very fine playing. please more more more, i ADORE irish traditional music.

Well, to be brutally honest.... &mdash 07/30/07 - 08:41:42 PM
...I love this...

I used to manage a music store attached to a folk music school, and I hung out with a lot of really good fingerpickers... Rick Cyge, Ken Perlman, Tracy Moore, Mark Stunkel (MacJammer ibstrat), Peter Janson (MacJammer Guitarjanson)... and I've heard the likes of Harvey Reid, Pierre Bensusan, Eric Schoenberg and John Renbourn live...

I love the feel of Celtic music, and I like the way you've voiced these melodies... Yes, I can hear minor glitches and hesitations, but if I was sitting next to you, or in the audience listening to you, nothing in this would mar the experience... You've got a good feel...

I like the tone you've captured in the guitar, and I like your general attack...

By all means, if YOU'RE not satisfied with your performance, keep recording this until you are, but I'm downloading it as is, and gratefully...

Of course, the next version should have an eyecatching graphic that suits the beauty of the melodies...

"How about some critique?" &mdash 07/31/07 - 03:26:26 AM
"How about some critique?" ... Well since you ask I will try to give some. And being a fingerstyle guitarist myself I'm very aware that I need as well listen to these advices myself.

First to the the postivie: I like the spirit of what your'e doing a lot. Acoustic music with a good spirit, that is music to my ears.

Then, if you want this to the sky, I guess what you need is time, time and time on the tune. In my life, some pieces get stuck in my brian. It is like a special love for them evolves, and I can sit play them for hours and hours, just round and round with new nuances all the time. It becomes an exploration of the tune and of my own playing too.

Theese pieces are the ones that use to work best in the long run. After a while you start to OWN the piece and you are gaining control of it to a level that your personal touch starts shining through more and more, and you get the feeling can do anything you want with it.

But as mentioned, it is not easy gained, it takes time. And enthusiasm, and from what I hear here you surely have it!

...beautiful sound and you separate the bass and melody lines very well.

Love to hear more of these. BTW: Nice looking guitar. Who's the maker?

Art & Lutherie made it, Canadian I think. I've learned a lot on that guitar, it's a real beauty. Thanks for the comment.

nice &mdash 02/19/08 - 11:31:47 AM
great playing on this, man. as for critique (and it totally applies to everything I do as well), try to do exactly what Cori says. play that song until you dont even need to concentrate while playing it. practice it until you can carry on a conversation with someone while playing. Then, it'll be totally your own, and you'll be so confident with it you'll find new little improvs you can add here and there.
That said, you really did do a great job pickin!

Great Playing &mdash 02/29/08 - 04:41:24 AM
Reminds me of John Renbourn's playing. What more can I say!

Wow! &mdash 06/22/08 - 09:43:43 AM
Recording-wise, this sounds perfect to me.
Your playing is fantastic! You are an awesome guitarist.

With regards to Irish jig style, the eighth notes sounded a little "straight" at times...

What I have been taught is that the first note of each group of three should be lengthened slightly, and the second shortened slightly for a "lilting" feel.... as you will hear if you listen to a lot of Irish musicians, although the amount of "lilt" seems to vary a lot -- less in Donegal style..
