I wish more of the mainstream black music was like this (and I know there's no country called "black" either, but to be fair, a good number of European Americans are simply lumped together under the "white" tag) - instead of about gang-bangin' and bling-blingin', would that we could have more discussion of identity, both racial and spiritual. One separates us and one unites us, if we look hard and deep enough. But onto the song, this is slick. The only reason I didn't go with all 10's was due to some clarity issues on some of the raps. Controversy is good - it promotes discussion. Simply nodding at the status quo when someone's preaching to the choir invites sedentary thought and who needs that? Bravo. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for the props. We might have to get Dopi to re-do his part. I had reservations about posting this song. Your response helps me feel a little better. Again, thanks

the bjack hit factory. I like your use of tight vocal harmonies that you place in almost all your songs... here they are in top form and drive the tune. Great rhythm and beat throughout.
I wish you would post the lyrics, cause I want to follow allow, especially in the rap section. I have a feeling it was meant to be less than totally clear stylistically? Maybe not, but I was thinking as a musical contrast highlighting the point of your song.
Funny, I have been working on a song about the prodigal son and came across the same picture that you use above. Father welcoming home the wayward son...
good one bjack. [ Reply to This ]

True density &mdash 08/01/07 - 08:03:33 AM
You've captured the sense of coming from so many places, eras, people, both ancestors and others. I love the density, the crowded vocal nature of the multi-voice arrangement. Tasty organ riffs too. I also dig the artwork you attached. Hip, entertaining, moving, full of truth and pride. Really nice. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for the props. Actually, this was gonna be a totally different song. I had some other lyrics and another vocal melody. I let my brother hear what I was doing and he said the track was too slammin' for those lyrics.
I didn't believe him and let my wife listen to what I was doing and she agreed with him (the next words out of her mouth was "do a gospel song". She's always trying to get me to do gospel songs). At first I couldn't think of anything and then she said "why don't you write about what you've been studying". It was a piece of cake after that. the 'Works'. What a great sound and production. I'm blown away with the arrangement too with those harmonies and parts.
None of us know our true roots though, as was proved recently on UK TV with a program called 'Who do you Think You Are?,'asking people did they think they were truly British. It also asked what consituted being British and did it go off which of their ancestors generation was British born.
It was fantastic to see the looks on the faces of the most bigotted and racist of them and a good percentage of others also, when it was traced through their DNA to prove that in almost all cases even though they were typically 'white', that they had Arab, North African or East European roots. Most had North African roots LOL. And a good few had American Indian genes. My own name tells me that I'm of Norse/French ancestry, but I also have Irish Gypsy, and God only knows what else in my genes. Yet I'm classed as English.
So it goes to show that none of us can swear as to where we 'Belong' or were originally from. What's more,Spiritually, I believe that on 'the other side' we will find there is no such thing as race or colour. We are all one and NO one person or group has the monopoly. He made us all.
Anyway,Back to this great song. There's nothing more exciting than vocal harmonies in my estimation; I love it. This is one of the best 'finished' songs I've heard on MJ so far and I'm sure it could be selling in the stores if it were put out there, Congratulations. M [ Reply to This ]

Thank you for the compliment. I could get into a deep debate with you but it would take away from the music. I respect and appreciate your opinion and especially your critique of the music. God bless. --- To go to MySpace and join our friends page click here.[ Reply to This ]
Don't know where to start! &mdash 08/04/07 - 04:44:47 PM
I grew up listening to the "old style" soul and R&B artists from America as well as lots of East Coast harmony bands (CSN&Y, Byrds etc) when I was young. I also went through a Bob Marley period. I have to admit though that rap music is something I was never able to get into.
What you've done here is, to my ears, really exceptional - it takes me back to nights listening to Sly and the Family Stone in my 20s, or the Four Tops in my teens. I'd love to read the lyrics too, but what I'm hearing is beautiful harmonies and great rhythms. Love the bass, and the beautiful production. This is a really fantastic achievement.
They just don't do soul and R&B like they used to!

I wanted to pull in not only my generation but the hip hop generation and also the people of the Caribbean (my wife's Jamaican).
For commercial purposes we try to stay on top of what's selling in the urban music scene (we submit a lot of songs for other artists to perform), but personally, I like old school where you had to sing your parts, sing about something that made sense, and couldn't rely on some machine to pull your vocals in key or whatever.
I wish I could get this song released but sadly, it's pay to play over here. I'm hoping the internet will provide an outlet for our music.
Thank you for the kind words. --- To go to MySpace and join our friends page click here.[ Reply to This ]

Man, this is a thing of beauty - great groove, wonderful mix, and awesome vocal harmonies. This is pro-level, no question, and deserves to be heard by a much wider audience, rather than most of the toss clogging up the charts. A stunning piece of work guys.
