Keywords:
prison (2)melancholy (56)songs about jail (1)public domain (1)collaboration (102)indie folk (2)if Leadbelly were a white man living in the digital age (1)
Description:
This is a collaboration between Buckhorn and myself; we've been threatening to do one for a looong time now, but both have kids and no time The guy is a genius, check out his stuffon his page buckhorn" . He tells me that this is an "old campfire song," but I've never heard it before. It's an old timey prison song, that I added an orchestra to.

Buckhorn did all of the guitars and the vocals, and I experimented with the orchestral JamPack since I picked it up recently and haven't really had a chance to mess with it (I also used the reggae bass). The song kind of reminds me of Vic Chessnut in a way or maybe the Waterboys. Nice job Buckhorn.

Lyrics:
mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys

Hardware:
intel mac mini, m-audio 49e keyboard, not sure what Buckhorn used.

You never heard this one before?? &mdash 08/01/07 - 09:22:52 PM
Well, i guess that's a good thing, because it means your version is unique. You guys did a great job on this. Mellow, but not losing the emotion of the words. I'm glad I found your music!

thanks &mdash 08/01/07 - 09:25:33 PM
for listening. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of these old songs, but obviously I am a bit deluded (no surprise there). Thanks for listening. Doesn't Buckhorn have a great voice?

Nice production here Michael &mdash 08/01/07 - 09:28:54 PM
I like how you take a while to build in the accompaniment. Very solid yet unobtrusive use of the orchestra. It gets pretty darn beautiful after a while. You're right about the Chestnut comparison. Nice work. Behind it all Buckhorn's got a real solid song here and a great style.

If MacJams had a Deathrow....

I was gonna say that!

For a couple of dads, you guys did a really great job. Micheal, you did a fantastic job with the orchestra. Next time you have visitation, I'll bring my laptop to get you to help me with mine!

(Of course I'll hide a file in the cd drive.)

very nice &mdash 08/02/07 - 01:19:51 PM
song. sounds really like sung from two cellas, sung by two palls. their back turn to the wall, which is dividing them. one holding guitar, the other one little harmonica. very nice, very soft sound of orchestra, which doesn't disturb at all, gives very nice full sound and feeling. and really like to hear that soft sound of harmonica through all those instruments. like if it was remembering us about, where we really are. in the prison. great song guys! enjoyed it. paja

i think buckhorns voice is most of the charm of this number, but i had a great time messing with his files.

Takes me... &mdash 08/02/07 - 03:17:05 PM
right back to the 60's when it was a hit in UK, but I forget who sang it then; maybe Lonnie Donegan. I like this subdued version of this haunting song, M

arraingment &mdash 08/03/07 - 12:27:07 AM
Had I been conducting the orchestra, I just would have said, Ok everybody play. It took me a while to catch on what story you were telling with the music. From solitary... a march to the gallos... dissolve to oblivion. The interpretation makes sense. I guess I was too preoccupied with my mistakes to notice exactly what you were getting at. Self consiousness is a form of selfishness. Regards

Its a tumble weed in the beggining of the big lebowski! its a flying elvis' befor they jump. Its a an over sized mud truck with a red headed beauty sitiing at the wheel and the truck is clean but shes covered in mud! Well one thing is for sure its a slice of americana even if its behind bars! I think what I'm sayin is.. its great!

Haunting number &mdash 08/05/07 - 10:29:45 AM
Outstanding track.. I don't know the original, but it puts me in mind of Nick Cave. The horns and strings work a treat (just picked the jampack up? How modest is that), and the two voices mix really well together.

Stark and stirring, lovely dramatic work.

I think &mdash 08/18/07 - 03:57:02 PM
It is a sad song. Difficult for me to judge this, I am out of my league here. I guess it is a cool song, cos I have the immediate urge to drink bear and fall of my barstool. So, as a freak, I can only endorse this kind of tunage :-D

Thanks for directing me this way, I missed it at the time. I was away from the internet on vacation around the time you posted it, so I was unaware of this version. I'm sorta glad I hadn't heard it or I would have copped parts of this sweet arrangement for sure, as it's really pretty neat. I think I first heard this song on Kingston Trio records.
