Keywords:
Ronnie Lane (1)
Description:
I watched "The Passing Show - The Life and Music of Ronnie Lane" recently and was moved to write this song for him. A great musician and a true free spirit. I recommend Rough Mix to anyone who doesn't own it - (made with Pete Townshend - my fav solo Pete album, too) ooh la la, Ronnie!

"god bless us all, annie, wherever we'll be"

Lyrics:
a song, a sigh - is lifted to the sky
a long and lonesome cry to draw you near
a lone reply - is softly sailing by
a tentative aside to calm the fear

you are here

daylight sings a song - and nighttime sings along - and all the notes belong - within the tune- and so do you

(whistle)

daylight sings a song, etc

when the day is done - we wait the rising sun - there's so much left unsung between the two - and I'll sing it through

and I'll sing it all the way to babylon
and I'll sing it all the way to kingdom come
and I'll sing it all the way to avalon
and I'll sing it all the way until I'm done

and we'll sing it all the way to babylon
and we'll sing it all the way to kingdom come
and we'll sing it all the way to avalon
and we'll sing it all the way until we're gone

la la la la .......................

I just love "The Debris" on "A nod is as good as wink to a blind horse". (... and Rod Stewart in better times)
What instrument is this? Mandoline or Ukelele? I Like this song and that mandoline, allthough I really miss a change somewhere.

thanks &mdash 08/05/07 - 11:51:11 AM
it's 2 different ukuleles (tenor and soprano)

it could have used another change, but I wanted to keep it super simple (I was thinking of Ooh La La - that just hangs on 2 chords. wonderful)

thanks for listening!

You make &mdash 08/05/07 - 05:37:37 AM
it sound so easy Brian. To be able to write such a deceptively simple sounding and catchy song is the master songwriters art. And you are a master songwriter. I love it, of course.
Cheers

the white album &mdash 08/05/07 - 07:52:31 AM
you do make it look easy Brian. A wonderful ode. The sound of the mandolin/uke? along with the piano is superb. If I could write like this I'd never leave the studio. Love the sing along part at the end!!!

thanks for listening!

I may change that last Cminor chord, though. it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it kind of nugs me now.

I like the fact that your singing does not betray an American accent. No offence intended but the music and the words gel wonderfully. i really enjoyed this, downloaded and a favourite. Smashing. JS

Hey Brian, I hit the play button when my daughter came flying in. She loves your stuff. The song reminded me of the numeous movies with a musical break, with the main characters horsing around, sunshine, laughter maybe a picknic setting. Ok I'm back. Thanks for the tune and thr trip.

if you saw RUSHMORE, you know Ronnie Lane. He sang "Oooh La La" (the chorus goes "I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger..." etc.) when he was in The Faces. Hopefully i've turned you on to him. That alone is the reward for writing this song.

thanks for listening!

WOW... &mdash 08/06/07 - 10:27:21 AM
You did a perfect job making this song. It's awesome good. I love the creativity- the different instruments that fit so well together, and the whistling. It is a great tribute to "Plonk." (OK, I saw that in Wikipedia)
It has an old fashion feel, like i feel when i listen to Sandy Denny. Let me know if you record a CD. :-)

thanks! &mdash 08/07/07 - 11:36:05 PM
I love Sandy Denny. What another great loss. Her version of Who Knows Where The Time Goes gives me chills every time I hear it. Leige and Lief is a fav. Love Richard Thompson to pieces, too!

I don't have any plans to make a CD ( I don't much like CD mastering as of late) but I may put uncompressed and higher bitrate compressed files up on a website soon for free download.

PS don't you love Wikipedia? I'm glad you looked Ronnie up. now get some of his music! you'll thank me. His "Annie" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written!

more great stuff? every thing is good. melody, lyric, vocal, pro production.
love the uke too. I almost bought one this weekend at the aloha festival (at the prisideo) never saw so many ukes in one place. Figured I should try to learn to play what I have first. good stuff again.

thanks! &mdash 08/07/07 - 11:43:22 PM
if you play guitar you can play uke. you fret it the same as the top 4 strings of the guitar, only it's tuned a 5th higher. If you can transpose, you're all set.

thanks for the kind words. did you mean the Presidio in san francisco? I wish i had known about it, if so. But i already have 3 ukes and don't have a good reason to buy another!

It was in the city. I was visiting friends and family. They weren't selling too many ukes there. But half the people were walking around with one under their arm. There was some really nice singing and dancing only problem was there was no beer.

A trend? &mdash 08/08/07 - 03:01:15 AM
Yours is the second song I've heard in the past week that features a uke... the other was on McCartney's "Memory Almost Full" CD. Not bad company to be in.

Charming little ditty and a lovely tribute to Ronnie, who went from Small Faces to... Forgotten Faces, all too soon. He deserved much better.

Very nice work here... all the way around. ;)

This has a terrific feel !

Very commercial. In fact this is truly one of the best tunes of this type of heard here at MJ.

Terrific ! Plus the singing is outstanding for this style.

Way to go!

Lovely tune Brian! &mdash 08/08/07 - 09:05:07 PM
I just can't get a decent sound out of a ukelele - and you get a great sound twice! Not fair :) You also seem to manage the other instruments really well ;)

Love your vocals - very tastefully done harmonies. Great playing and a solid, thoughtful set of lyrics. Production also very classy.

Like it!!

"Rough Mix" was long one of my favorite albums... &mdash 08/10/07 - 08:33:26 PM
...and 'Annie' was my favorite song on it... It has ended up on more mix tapes over the years...

This has a nice bit of that Ronnie Lane sound, but it also really has echoes, for me, of Harry Nilsson... Great melody, great singing, great lyric...

This is, I think, my first intro to your music, and I'm flat out stunned...

I just discovered that ROUGH MIX has been remastered with extra tracks and is a Dual layer CD with a 5.1 mix included. It's ordered, of course. Haven't gotten it yet, but it'll be in heavy rotation as soon as it arrives.

I like Harry Nilson, but I've never actually owned an album by him. I always knew him more by other people's cover versions of his songs. Even though his version of WITHOUT YOU is stunning, I actually prefer the Badfinger original. I love CUDDLY TOY (the Monkees version)

Thanks for listening!

pop &mdash 08/11/07 - 11:01:56 PM
perfection. it's like all of what was good about 60's and early 70's, but new and fresh. what a great song, and that ending is soo good. those chords come out of nowhere. makes me wanna go buy a good uke, and a toy piano (Barbie puts out a pretty good one; played it at toys r' us).

pop has always been one of my great love affairs, but i have given up on it for the most part as it seems so rare to hear it done really well. you do it really well, can't wait for the next hit.

thanks! &mdash 08/12/07 - 12:28:24 PM
have you heard Field Music? It's super smart pop in the XTC tradition. Check them out - you'll be glad you did.
I just got tickets to see Big Star here at the Fillmore. I know its only half of them (the other half IS The Posies, though...) but I saw them last time they came here and it was power pop heaven. Can't wait.

Thanks for listening!

I'd cry if I had any tears left &mdash 04/18/08 - 08:16:39 PM
This really is a sterling, brilliant piece of lyric, thoughtfulness and execution. The "sing it" repetition works so very well here, and wouldn't in the hands of anyone but an inspired craftsman.

I'm making connections to other greats of Ronnie's Faces-and-beyond era, such as George Harrison's ukulele porch-picking and the title track of McCartney's underrated Ram album (though this tune is more developed that Ram, actually). There's not a Beatle connection so much as a common channeling of roots.

I might just have to pick up Rough Mix one of these days - I used to really dig that album back in the vinyl days. And: Thank you for the download, I may have to study it to remember how to write a song...

STUNNING! &mdash 07/29/08 - 09:27:10 PM
I just stumbled upon your song and this website and had to tell ya...this is the best song I've heard in ages. I'm a bit of a music snob, I mean, I hardly hear anything I'm nuts about any more but THIS is a truly great tune, played and sung well with a really nice lyric to boot. Where are you hiding?

Funny, as I just rented the Ronnie Lane doc. myself and was inspired to write a tune too but sadly only half finished (typical) and floundering. He was such a touching figure. I adored the Small Faces but remained a fan of his songwriting throughout.

I agree about "Annie"...the song slays me EVERY TIME.

If you've not yet picked up some Nilsson, you really must at least hear the tunes on "The Point". You're like a kindred spirit...just excellent hooky melodies but with an elegant atmosphere somehow. Like your tune here. 5 stars!!!
