Mr. Vic at first thanks for remembering me and sending me your link to this song.
The song : it's so nice to hear from you as always, and i really loved this one as FOREVER YESTERDAY (which is my favorite one of yours and it's in my special CD), the guitar is so clean, the lyrics very nice words you wrote, the vocal -maybe your best- !! .
From all the sides, loved this one !!
I'm glad you backed with such a nice tone

Everything going in is pretty much set-up. I just add compression and a high pass filter on the guitars. Then volume and panning all over the place. I had to record this in short bursts. To busy with work and the upstairs would be hot as a oven. Thats what influenced the wind theme. Box fan of course, but who sings about box fans.

The hardest part on this was I had to keep retuning after each take. My recording has like a sauna during our heat wave.
I grew up playing to JHE albums as well as beatles.
He did a studio version of the star spangled banner that's an orchestrated guitar and bass masterpiece, recorded well before his death. Hard to find. But I've been toying with the idea for years.

Chords &mdash 08/06/07 - 05:20:15 PM
Vic, I think we might have learnt (or not) from the same chord book. I rarely use easily named chords (well, they/re not easily named by me anyway) - mostly triads and diads learnt from many years doodling on my 12 string (have you ever tried to hold down bar chords on a 12 string that you haven't played for a while?).
Whatever you use, they sound very "right".

When i start dinking around I'll find some progression that sounds cool, I'll record that and build from there.
luckily for me I keep my 30 yr. old Takemine 12 string at work. So I can goof with that at breaks. Fortunately, the action is perfect and low I can bar a A chord at the 12 fret.

I remember &mdash 08/06/07 - 06:24:07 AM
back in the goofy, breathless days of being a yoot, when a favourite artist would release a new album and I would buy it, sight unseen, and know I'd love it. I'd see it in the 'new releases' rack, and think OH YEAH! IT'S HERE! Seven bucks later, and I'm heading home with it, studying the cover art, reading the song titles and relishing the anticipation of what those words will become when the needle hit the vinyl. Those were great days.
I feel like that with your stuff, Vic. This place is where music is real, exciting and sometimes touched with a little genius too... [ Reply to This ]

The ending was one of the guitars starting to modulate when i was setting up another track. I thought it was a cool sound and recorded it right there. I doubt if I would ever be able to create it again. Then i added some distorted swells and a reverse guitar bit. just one of those happy accidents.

Taken me a while to get 'round to listening to any of your stuff, and now it's going to take me a while to trawl the back catalogue. Damn! One of the drawbacks of discovering tracks on MJ's I suppose.
I like this a lot. Above all it sounds fun - like you had fun making it and just letting your mind wander and letting your guitar do the talking. Fantastic playing by the way.
Just out of interest how the hell do you master this so loud, without it distorting - this really blew my ears off. In a good way:-))

It's always fun to create something and not sure where it might end.
Most of the volume and head room comes from using a muLticompressor plug in, it also works a bit like an Equalizer. That takes some practice to work with. Then add a limiter as the very last plug in. this will stop any volume levels from going in to the red.

Hendrix jumps out at me. You got me smiling again as I enjoy another trip down memory lane. I'd like to hear your version of the Star Spangled Banner, so I could play it every morning when I wake up... then Gracie Slick would cry out "good morning people! are you ready for some morning maniac music"... well, something like that. Then another Holman track and a bowl of Wheaties and I am off to work!
Keep 'em coming Mr. Vic [ Reply to This ]
Hi Jack &mdash 08/07/07 - 07:04:52 PM
purely intentional. I learned alot of guitar playing along with the albums as a teen, badly of course.
Iif I did get around to doing the Star Spangle Banner, it wouldn't be the Woodstock variety. The in-studio version had countless guitars and basses playing like a symphony. It's a pretty complex piece on how he did it. ... it's almost intimidating to even attempt.
