Love (945)lovers (6)romance (45)love song (41)keyboard (41)horns (30)
Description:
It seems Love is in the air right now at MacJams. The good Deputy has *Doofed* some lovely gal into marrying him, Ronnie Long recently wed a beautiful lady and Cantor and ShifraSongstress have tied the knot; Skean is on a romantic trip to meet The Nightbird... the love of his life and Magritte is counting the days to her nuptials.

With all that in mind, I decided to roll out this long-neglected demo... a love song that describes how my wonderful love makes me feel.

I dedicate it to all the aforementioned Mac Jammers and the ones they love, as well as any others here I might have missed.

Lyrics:
She Can
Music and Lyrics © 2006 By J.A. Stewart
— ALL RIGHTS RESERVED —

There’ve been girls who nearly thrilled me, done their best, it’s true, but...
None could ever light the flame and help my love shine through ---
Each was loved to some degree, but red-hot? sadly no --- oh ---
Only one has reached my heart and fired my passions so -------- and only

Chorus:

She --- Can --- make my heart beat fast or slow
Make me feel so high, so low --- nobody can quite like She Can ---------

Lovely ladies turn my head and catch me with their eye---s...
But gentle snares can’t hold a heart that knows no com-pro-mise ---
Some loving hugs, a tender kiss, can help me feel content...
But when I love, I need to feel the climb is an ascent --------------- and only

She --- Can --- help me reach that dizzy height
Her steady love keeps me upright --- nobody can quite like She Can

Bridge:

Oh She --- Can make me feel --- glad, when I’ve been feeling sad ---
She helps me to go right on climb-ing ---

Well only She Can --- help me reach my life’s true goal
Draw my love right from my soul --- nobody can quite like She Can ---------

And only She Can --- help me through this lonely night,
Keep me warm, just hold me tight --- nobody can quite like She Can ---------

Yes, only She --- Can --- make my heart beat fast or slow
Make me feel so high, so low --- nobody can quite like She Can ---------

Thank you, Maurice for listening and for your comments.

Interestingly, I recorded the vocals while still somewhat in the throes of a head cold. lol

awww. &mdash 08/06/07 - 03:14:21 PM
that's terribly sweet -- I'm a sucker for romantical-like songs. :-) Has a very loungy feel... Almost a bit like Tom Jones. This is a really great, full composition. My sincerest congratulations to all recently and almost wed amongst us! I'm almost upon my year anniversary being married to my MacJammer Love. Ain't love swell?! Weeeeeeeeee!

Actually, your marriage came to mind when I was reading all the recent accounts. I guess you and your hubby, as well as RCA and Kren were ahead of the MacJammer's Lonely Hearts Club curve. lol

As far as the "loungy feel"... yes, I was wearing a gold lame tuxedo when I recorded it. ;)

now you realize I meant that in the best of ways! I love that sound. It evokes a nostalgia that is everything genuine, full of passion and all about love. Now pour me some brandy, wouldya? :-)

Love song indeed... &mdash 08/06/07 - 03:21:59 PM
what a fine, fine song... fits in with the love standards of old. But it is new and fresh. Well sung with top notch music. And I have to give mention to the song writing. Especially liked the change in the middle... really some classic stuff.

J.A... our own love song crooner ala (take your pick, there are so many great ones).

Thank you, my young friend. I'm glad you liked it.

I guess my only instrumental, Flim-Flamenco, led you off-track... I usually do sing --- quite a lot --- in my other compositions. lol

But thanks for your kind words. ;)

Wow &mdash 08/07/07 - 04:57:23 AM
Wow what a surprize. Can't be many songs here on MJ with a style even near this. Sounds so authentic, like a real hit song from sometime long ago.

Didn't know you have such a great voice. Wish I had just a litttle of it. You could be a professional singer.

Re: Wow &mdash 08/07/07 - 09:08:00 AM
Thank you for your comments, Curry.

Well a long time ago... in a musical galaxy (that now seems) far, far away... lots of people actually DID pay to hear me play and sing. LOL

But generally, they wanted to hear Rock songs they could dance to, not ballads like this one.

So when I write, I like to explore different genres that I never had a chance to play in my Band Daze. ;)

Very heartfelt vocals, with palpable yet restrained emotion. Your vocals remind me of the classic voices of yesteryears... mellow and soothing. The backing instruments really build a romantic sentimental atmosphere.

Hey, Leon... thx for taking time from your vacation to give this a listen and comment.

Yes, the style is perhaps a bit dated, but the mood lives on. LOL

Who needs Tony Bennett when they have you? Geez what a wonderful romantic crooner you are. I need a fan...hurry! :) The Love Boat has come back to life. Seriously, I love the talent you have. Great voice. Great song. Thanks for sharing and for the smile you gave me.

Gee, thanks Gail.

My Mom would have loved this song... she always wanted me to sing more *romantic* numbers, rather than the Rock & Roll stuff.

Glad it brought a smile to you... that's always a good thing. ;)

I love the song - not the mix &mdash 08/23/07 - 10:25:26 AM
This is a wonderful song lyrically that set the mood and keeps you there. A beautiful love song indeed. Excellent vocals and the music is right on too, but I have a problems with the mix.
Mostly, it's the compression on the mix that I have trouble with. It just seemed squashed to me, like the dynamics of the mix is not there anymore.

With your experience in the business, I wouldn't presume to sit in judgement of your skills, but I had to say something.

Otherwise this is a great song

Re: I love the song - not the mix &mdash 08/23/07 - 11:16:47 AM
Thanks, Ed. I appreciate the listen and glad you liked the song. I can live with you not appreciating the mix. The music I post here and elsewhere on the internet is never meant to be anything other than adequate, *demo* quality.

So you may be right about the compression factor... this was really just a first-pass demo on a new piece of equipment for me.

As I mentioned in my notes, I recorded this about three years ago on a Roland VS-880EX workstation, as I was making my (late) entry into digital recording. GB emerged shortly thereafter and made things so much easier.

While a very versatile piece of equipment, the VS-880EX was, to me, even more challenging than learning how to navigate in LogicExpress.

If I decide to include this tune on a CD, I would either take the basic tracks to a REAL studio and let a pro mixing engineer handle it, or import them into Logic and spend more time concentrating on the mixing process myself. ;)

Your welcome, and thanks &mdash 08/23/07 - 07:13:03 PM
for the come back. I'm coming into this kind of recording a little late too. Most of what I've done in the past, and what I'll initially post was done in the early to mid 90's on analog tape using outboard processing gear, so getting used to being able to do it all in the computer is a challenge.
But even at my best, my writing, playing and production was never that great. I just like to make music for myself and let the "chips" fall where they may.

Anyway, you have a great song there. Keep up the good work

I guess I'm my own best fan. So be it! It's an upside down world anyway! and that's Slo Parts by the way!

True, no one could sing this song like me... but I still think Tony Bennett could sing it better. ;)

I like the arrangement, where you're the bandleader and you've got the full orchestra behind you. Takes me back to the 8-track tape player days.

8-Track days? lol

Yes, Bob, I enjoy being the bandleader... especially when this particular band doesn't give me any grief and just plays what I want. ;)
