Description:
A submission for the "Analogapalooza Festival".

This is the second of two tunes (the first being "Time's Passing") that my good friend, Michele, and I wrote. It was a very creative period. We were fortunate enough to have a friend with a recording studio and some free time (literally) the day after writing them.

It was a small studio in Athens, Ohio. "LRS Recording Studio". 1981. Can't remember the owner/engineer's name....but he was a really nice guy and definitely knew what he was doing. I can't remember the equipment, either...although it was definitely reel-to-reel.

So...we recorded this and the other in one take each (playing on separate tracks, as I remember). A bit rough...but music of the heart, nonetheless.

Definitely ... &mdash 08/07/07 - 08:46:10 AM
...not rough, Bob. It is pretty remarkable that you two recorded this in one take and did it so beautifully. After all these years, the sound quality is great...I love the gentleness of this little number, unaffected by a lot of instrumental garbage in the background. It is just a sweet sweet song played with tenderness. Guitar/cello -- you may be on to something here. It is a beautiful combination. Your understated backup is perfect to carry the tune. Add a bass line (acoustic or something that SOUNDS acoustic) and see what you think. That'd be my only thought. Lovely tune. You should write more of these.

I was very happy with how well this tune transferred from cassette to disk. Was worried that the tape would have degraded too much.

Bob, the combination of these two instruments. Don't remember when the last time i heard cello. What a sound, isn't it. But have to say the melody you are playing on the guitar is SOMETHING. It is truly wonderful. I would maybe even turn the guitar bit higher, to hear it really well. It sounds like water to me. Sometimes a running stream, sometimes like those rings appearing on the lake, where on the surface is reflecting the sun, you throw in a stone and those rings appear, making the still water to come alive. Beautiful.

Set up a cello and a guitar in the nursery and tried to put the baby to sleep?

This is beautiful. I bet it would work better than a Tuba lullabye with a drum solo.

I could be wrong though.

Great song. I'm going to take a little nap now.

Sounds very present, alive and real... &mdash 08/07/07 - 09:29:15 PM
It lacks that final patina of production that would make every note like every other note, and so it ends up sounding as one might hear it if one were sitting there listening to you two working it out...

Lovely, especially the long cello notes at the very end...

It's so cool hearing music that might have disappeared into the void before MacJams... Who knows where this will go and who will hear it and love it next?

As to where this or other tunes will go next: I'll be posting a new version of the other cello/guitar piece that Paul F. Page put his had to, recently. I have so much respect for him and love what he's done.

Peace,

...I'd like to put this on the CD I'm working on now. All acoustic (don't think metal/industrial would fit in here, do ya?). Taking a bit longer than I thought it would, though. But I'll git thar, by crackee!!

I want Michele to get GB (she's in Iowa) so we can do more collabs or, at the very least, do what we've already done over again. You should hear her now, man. Sooooo fine...

Be nice to put "Selah's Song" on there, too. Kidding...but told you on that page it's really one of the nicest solo pieces I've ever heard.

Thanks for the compliment, McBoy. I'm into all your music. Big fan.

You're the second person... &mdash 08/09/07 - 12:14:59 PM
...to say we should turn up the guitar a bit. I must say that this is refreshing after years of "Turn that damn thing DOWN!!".

Honestly don't remember the balance being a problem when we recorded. Wondering whether it's because the guitar signal has degraded faster than the cello on the cassette? Shorter signal. Might make sense.

Then again...the recording engineer did like Michele...

Hmmmm...espionage? How intriguing...

Anyway...

Thanks for the print, my friend. I love "Things Must Change"...

too late for critiques... &mdash 08/10/07 - 01:24:34 PM
since this was done long ago... but I'll offer my thoughts. First of all, its a gorgeously written piece, the legato cello and staccato guitar writing is perfect. The cello *is* slightly louder and richer than the guitar, it tends to envelop it and almost swallow it with its rich warmth... not necessarily a bad thing, but boosting the guitar a bit might have helped, although I sure LOVE the deep richness of the cello sound here, really well recorded. Finally, there seemed to be a tiny tiny pitch difference between the two isntruments, which sort of bothered me throughout, one was ever-so-slightly sharp compared to the other, to my ear... though nobody else mentioned it, so it may just be me today. But again, I want to emphasize that this is a really delicious piece of writing and performing, a gorgeous soothing piece of music!

...I would l-o-v-e to do this again with Michele. I know my playing's gotten better and can tell you, quite simply, that she sounds incredible. Be nice to "iron out the kinks" and have fun with it.

Will have to listen for the difference in tunings. Wouldn't surprise me. Back then, esp., I tended to tune towards the sharp side. Have worked hard on correcting that. Used to drive my violinist/perfect pitch friend up a freakin' wall!

Glad you liked this, Ed.

Hiss &mdash 08/11/07 - 12:18:13 PM
I personally find a certain amount of warmth ( in particular string instruments ) is retained with analog recordings. To my ears .... and this is my opinion only, the most accurate reproduction of my guitar sound ( I am extremely particular in my amp settings etc.) has been acheived with my Tascam.
You are right on the money, I did not notice the hiss and I was drawn in completely by the music. The instruments did sound very natural, and I thought the recording was very clean.
