Description:
meditative piece for strings - roughly in sonata allegro form, with a 21st century touch- i conceived of this with a lazy antique court scene in mind - lounge music for the royals. In Sonnyjim's words: "parlor music for parasites" -

Per drakonis' request ;) I must mention that this is an actual live performance of my work by professional Julliard-trained LARK QUARTET - they are fantastic internationally-renowned players, and I am fortunate to have had the privilege of having them interpret my music. Not many effects here- 2 mikes - one in the center of the ensemble and another to pick up the room's natural acoustic- AKGc414Bxls - one of my favorite mics- mixed minimally in protools.

This is m composition-= but I do not play strings- that is an actual string quartet- that's why it sounds so real. :) they did a great job with the phrasing and played a lot of emotion into a piece that would otherwise be "absolute music" peace to u

If these aren't real strings then that is very, very good programming ;-)

Good harmonies and well structured.

Splendid stuff.

extremely impressed &mdash 08/08/07 - 11:40:37 AM
Wow, what a great, listenably enjoyable composition, and so nicely performed too! I heard the "human" rustling between the notes right away, as well as the kind of "real" playing that cannot be computer-generated... so I knew it was a real performance. However, you should mention in the description that this is a live performance of your music, just to toot your own horn a little (and to give kudos to the excellent performers here)... not many people get to hear their classical compositions performed live! Very nice piece... when did you write this, and who performed it? Also, very nicely recorded, very crisp and clean, nice separation. And the artwork is very cute, reminds me a bit of the cover of Claude Bolling's Suite for Flute and Jazz piano. I did not see it in your Bio, but I sense a lot of music training... and a lot of energy and passion. Boy did you come to the right place... please accept a belated and humble welcome to Macjams from me! You are now added to my fave-list, so I can be alerted to new pieces from you!
ttfn,
Drakonis

Does Peter Greenaway know about this?
I have run out of superlatives, I'm afraid. Looking over the variety and depth of the work you've posted over the past 3 days, I am stunned at the degree of understanding and -perhaps more important- real sympathy you have for so many types of music. You're an extremely gifted guy, and I am very glad you're here.

Very beautiful Mozartian composition.Nothing beats the sound of real instruments-they do a wonderful job playing it.
Is this part of a longer composition or a stand-alone piece?

I don't listen to much classical music, but I do enjoy a good string quartet. This is very nicely written - it must be quite amazing to have a string quartet of this quality at your disposal.
A really good listen.

Beautiful contemplative piece. &mdash 08/09/07 - 12:28:11 PM
I could see this in a film like Barry Lyndon. It has that sense of melancholy. Excellent writing and mastery playing by the Lark quartet.
A real treat.

yes there is melancholy built into this piece by virtue of its key- but even more so, there is longing in my soul that I wanted to express through the interweaving of the musical lines-- rising and falling like waves, equal partners all- death and life- the eternal cycle- never-ending. thank u for your kind words

I always love tunes I can envision &mdash 08/09/07 - 03:09:52 PM
A pretty lady sitting at in a beautiful couch with her fan fanning on a hot summer's day. Talking with the other ladies on a hot summers day in the 1700 etc. One that is the envy of all around, with her hair up in a bun so neatly done with drop dead gorgeous attire. :)

I don't know but it is tunes like this the really get me seeing a movie in my mind. In is sad that the hot radio stations have to be glitz, glitz and more glitz and not enough cultural heritage! Thanks for helping break the mold :) !

yes, that is the beauty of absolute music also: that you can create your own visions- summon internal perception and bring to light the caverns of your subconscious-

pretty lady fanning herself on a hot summer's day- ahhhhh.

A Lovely Piece of Writing... &mdash 08/09/07 - 11:06:23 PM
and performed very well.

I am always jealous when I hear real strings played by musicians who can bring so much emotion and subtle nuance to a piece of music like this.

It must be very satisfying to hear your composition come to life. ;)

yes i think that in today's day and age we are losing touch with our humanity - the soul of music is still in live playing - and nothing can replace the yearning that can only be expressed by a soul in flux

As an ex-violinist myself, I can attest to the talent required to perform to this exquisite level (not sure I can even say that in this company given your background!) But the thing I love most about the string quartet is the intimacy of it -- you can almost hear their bodies moving in unison as the music swells up and down, side to side. Like fret noise on the classical guitar, I love to hear the players breathe like I do in this performance. It makes this all the more human. Lovely composition. Welcome!

Beautifully written and performed- &mdash 08/11/07 - 09:10:03 AM
This is so wonderful to be able to click and listen. You are fortunate to have a live group play your composition, but you obviously have paid your dues to get to that point. Despite your humble comments about the mixing, you did an awesome job in getting the sound of a string quartet beautifully - did you do your own technical work?

[ Reply to This ]
thank u &mdash 08/11/07 - 11:09:43 AM
i labored over crafting this piece because the interweaving of the musical lines is so intricate- and i really wanted the themes to ring clearly - re: mixing- i try to do my own when i can - i like to use 2-3 mics to capture more sonic dimension ... it's hit or miss- practice makes perfect... :)

wonderfully performed &mdash 08/11/07 - 10:08:35 PM
This piece is so nicely conceived and performed, and very well-recorded.

I couldn't really detect any "21st century touch" here, however; the composition is very straightforward in a 19th century way, reminiscent of Beethoven, and later, Dvorak.

Very pleasant listening in any case.

Very measured, which brings out the emotion in a paradoxical way. How did you come into possession of an entire string quartet? Are you a teacher, or are you fabulously wealthy. Whatever, good job!
