Description:
A re-vamp of a re-vamp.
Matt M - vocals (lyric adjustments), file deletions
Neil P - bass guitar
AP B - guitar, backing vocals, production, composition, arrangement, some more file deletions :o)
Mathew "Muffy" Smith - lyrics
Thanks to them for volunteering their fab performances, very grateful. It is certainly 'different' now ;o)
Started in GBv3 .. ended up in Logic Pro 7.
Lyrics:
Stop, stop
Tellin' me you don't love me-
Stop, stop
Sayin' that you don't care-
If you left in the first place,
We wouldn't have this mess.
Why you stopped lovin' me,
I'll never know.
From all I did and all that I tried,
All I heard was lies, lies, lies,
Why I bother, God knows why I try,
When all I get are lies, lies, lies, lies.
Heaven/Hell knows at the start of the years,
The way it will happen, will it all end in tears,
If we knew then, what we know now ..
Would it be different?
It's fun while it lasts but pain when it ends,
Now your a friend, I have to call.
At the back of your mind, all you know is ..
it's better to have had love than have never loved at all... isn't it?
Ask yourself a question,
Turn it over in your mind,
Turn and look me in the eye
Why did you stop...

when hard rock was king... ufo, and some sly takes on a few kiss riffs?
nicely mixed... logic is a true step or two above GB...nicely done to all involved!!! [ Reply to This ]
:o) &mdash 08/08/07 - 03:57:42 PM
.. you've been reading my influences again haven't you? haha
On the guitar:
Yup, I think I kinda go for a 70's guitar tone, slightly modernised .. and are show a fair influence to the energetic, more gutsy, rock'n'roll 1st 3 KISS albums here, especially "Dressed to Kill" and tracks like 'Come on and love me' .. with a bit of Queen thrown in for good measure .. the UFO is
a bit more subliminal .. hear it more in "long way home" than this .. this is more 'KISS' .. with a hint of pop.
Sonny Jim has such a powerful voice - made putting my
twee pop voice up against it something of a challenge ..
and I think I stumbled onto something at the bridge which
always had a little simple 'hook' quality to it ..that
everyone was picking up on .. Neil got it building nicely
there too I thought.
I've learnt alot doing this one. [ Reply to This ]

say this re-vamp is the song I have learnt the most from

"arse yourself a question" hahaha .. nah, wouldn't work ..
felt like singing that though after Logic decided to evaporate a previous take of that twicky high bit at the bridge ..
For this version my role switched mostly to producer...and
backing vocal deleter. :o) [ Reply to This ]

Alan, thank you for the opportunity to wail on your song; it was a pleasure to stretch out a little over the fine framework you made. BTW, your post-production rocks, too! Hat's off to Neil, as well, for fattening the whole thing up with real style. I think we done good........ [ Reply to This ]
Thanks you.. &mdash 08/09/07 - 12:44:37 PM
.. it did feel this song was 20% performance and 80% production (from my part) .. the guitar for this was a one
take: I rehearsed this song so much around when it was written , that I can still play it in my sleep... so I'm relieved you noticed and appreciated the production effort.
It was incredibly flattering to get a request from not one but two! great MJ performers wanting to lend their time and talents to this. I think we did a grand job too. *back patting all round* :o) [ Reply to This ]
tasty &mdash 08/08/07 - 08:57:09 PM
Wow. Rawk-On!
Really tight axe work, shock and awe. Devastating vocals and harmonies kudos to the vox master Matt. "this me-ye-e-ye-ess!" I'm dyin'! The way the vocals overlap each other in parts, along with the delay tails is so retro. The bridge is amazingly tasty. Top notch mixing in all it's pop-rock glory. My lighter is lit for an encore. [ Reply to This ]
Wow &mdash 08/09/07 - 01:20:13 PM
.. thanks Philip. I love your mixes and PRO-duction (as
r.a.d. calls it). I produce by the seat of my pants .. with a wing and a prayer etc..with no training, limited manual reading etc .. this was my first time mastering with the AU Plug-in Ozone 3 too.
I'm quite of the 'spin-off' bridge idea .. one thing just led to another ..
I'm quite partial to the "lu-uh-wu-uh-wuv-me" bit myself.
Thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed this. [ Reply to This ]

southern rocker charm - arena rock riffs- and a kickin vocal! sonnyj is like bowie with better intonation - i love the 80s new wave rock feel of this 2 - good "fusion rock" kudos [ Reply to This ]

.. it's that banjo that gives it away huh? hahah ..
Actually for a New York (USA), Australia, Scot living in Sweden (who has a rhythm sounds like a German guitarist from the 70/80s in an English band .. boy am I confused)..er.. where was I .. oh yeah .. outfit .. we don't do a bad southern rock number, if ah say so mesel' .. ;o) [ Reply to This ]
Excellent piece guys &mdash 08/08/07 - 10:13:51 PM
I think you nailed with saying it's a cross of UFO and a little bit of KISS.
Great tune! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Vic .. &mdash 08/09/07 - 02:29:25 PM
.. that's in the guitars? Or does Sonny's vocal give it
a leaning to UFO? It's that mid-cut thang .. and the Gibson ..
;o)
I am influenced by a few of their classic tracks .. and
I like "I 'ain't no baby" from 'Obsession' too, great vocals. [ Reply to This ]
Oh .. &mdash 08/09/07 - 02:42:27 PM
.. and I think UFO shows their "Small Faces" influence a fair bit from time to time too. eg. "Too hot to handle" .. and
.. yup .. I'm influenced by them too. *doh* ;o) [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Alan &mdash 08/08/07 - 10:29:13 PM
Good to see this is going so well. When I first heard this (on your first post) it seemed to have so much potential - which is why I was so keen to play bass on it. I think Matt's vocal really nailed it, but the guitars and drums were already excellent. The harmonies really topped it off for me. These multi-continental collabs are so cool ;) Always interested!

Flattered by the comparison .. Norman Goodman thought this one I did with vocals courtesy of the r.a.d. project was UFO-esque too... perhaps even more 'live at the Budokan' .. I do like a bit of MSG: Monosodium Glutamate, every chance I get .. and Unidentified Fried Objects too ;o) [ Reply to This ]

alan, good melody and really great vocals which fits fantastic to this kind of music. like the echoes on stop op op p! :) and ADORE the verse "ask yourself questions..... till the end of it. "Dusty rode ..." .. well you never know .. someday .. MJs
should organised a small tour of USA .. connecting venues

fun. :o) [ Reply to This ]

You guys are pounding it out on this one. Lots and lots of passionate emotions spill from the performances on this one.
Great vocal performance, both lead and backing. Love it! However, I've never read in the liner notes, anyone receiving credit for deleting a file, but it's valid, I guess... Huh...
Can't beleive all of these great collabs recently! Perfect ensemble of players here.
Had kind of an 80's tinge to it - that's a cool thing - for you guys too, I hope! I was dign't the sounds back when, and still do.
Neil, I've never heard you ROCK like this before. Excellent job, my friend! You got a nice round sound outta those fat strings!
And you're just tearing it up on the g'tar, alan. Vocals too! Nice sound!
Great writing. Good production. Excellent arrangement!
Thanks, fellas! Dion

Thanks Dion &mdash 10/29/07 - 06:54:25 AM
.. I'm sure the guys appreciate your kind words, as do I.
That 'deletion' thang .. was more making 'a wee jest' of how
this song seemed to attract those annoying gremlins .. probably more 'conjuroring tricks involving file evaporation'... than of course anything intentional.
It was very much appreciated SJ not only took the time to
do this .. but re-did the main parts due to afore-mentioned
trouble.... we look back and laugh at it now, kinda thing..
lol.
Neil also provided an outstanding performance, very tight
and rockin'... I twiddled with his sound a bit, which he
was very open about- I wanted to try out some tips I'd gleened for bass production. [ Reply to This ]
Wait. Was that a banjo? &mdash 08/12/07 - 01:24:39 AM
Apart from that it's a pretty standard but very nicely executed rock song.
And apart from some occasional strings. I like how they just thicken up the sound rather than playing a real solo part.
Great guitar playing and singing!
Victor. [ Reply to This ]
:o) &mdash 08/14/07 - 05:48:15 AM
.. surely was Vic. I kept it from the last version as it
seemed to get everyone in the 'right mood' for a listen
and thus would have (I suspect) been sadly missed.
It's not the worlds most complicated song and doesn't
pretend to be either .. it's as you say a pretty standard
'text book' rock song/arrangement.
I'm glad you mention the little synth work: it was important to choose well the voices to 'add' to the sound .. and as you say "beef up"/play supporting role in other spots .. and
never be very "hello look at me, I'm a synth!" .. kinda
thang... and I wanted to get away from just using the
typical hammondy organ sound for a change... although I am
fond of that.
Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

Alan, I loved this song the first time, and now it's bigger and better! You guys accomplished a very robust sound here, the result is very pleasing. A great song to begin, but yeah, I have to say it sounds awesome now! Loved it, faved it! [ Reply to This ]

.. for taking the time to follow-up on this one and I'm
glad it was 'a step' or two up on the previous version...
I did hope since it had two additional fine performers on
it .. I just had to not mess up the production, and we
would be in the clear. :o) [ Reply to This ]
YEAH!!! &mdash 08/13/07 - 04:03:40 PM
I'm glad you kept the momentary tweak of banjos. Starts with a grin, but then it kicks out the chocks and school is indeed in session, boys. This is the way it used to be when guitars were superhero weapons, and those who wielded' em were superheroes. KISS knew that, and we knew it too.
This is rock-solid, arena-volume fun - I was 16 again, shouting and cheering like a fool. Man, I love this place - lighters lit and held high for you, Sonny Jim and Jiguma. Excelle-e-ent! [ Reply to This ]

Superhero With A Banjo &mdash 08/14/07 - 02:04:11 PM
...hard to picture, isn't it? Some outragously-buffed-out Marvel comics guy with shoulders wider than a locomotive, cleft chin, great hair... and a banjo. (Cue banjo riff...)
UNLESS... the superhero-villian fight goes down while Bugs Bunny's "Hillbilly Breakdown" pumps away in the background. Yeah...
"Grab a fence post, hold it tight
Whomp your partner with all your might
Hit him in the shin, hit him in the head
Hit him again, the critter ain't dead
Whomp him low and whomp him high
Stick your finger in his eye
Pretty little rhythm, pretty little sound
Bang your head against the ground"
Maybe the banjo has some 'clout' after all!

great re-vamp. I want to say Sonny Jim's voice is like Joy Division's or Interpol's lead singers. Would be interested in hearing him sing something in that genre.
Alan, great as always. [ Reply to This ]
Yes &mdash 08/17/07 - 11:42:05 AM
This similarity has been called to my attention before. Even though I'm pretty familiar with Ian Curtis (it was practically the official Muzak in my dorm at school....), I don't know anything at all about Interpol (I will look into it, though).
As for singing other genres, I don't usually write for vocals in my own songs, but I'm always open to collaboration...... [ Reply to This ]

in your face Ace! hehe. I love this era in time! When guitar and songwriting reigned. The sound quality is top-notch. Makes me want to throw my Pro Tools out the window. Excellent performances by eveybody. The only thing I'd say, If I could be so bold is that it needs a slower fader slide in the end. Besides that, I enjoyed this a lot. Makes me want to tear up some "blues boxes".
Congrats Gentlemen!

.. and apologies for confusing you with my comment on your song Evolution
. I wrote this song in .. oh 93/94 ish .. but even then it
had that much earlier era sound. :o)
I wouldn't throw the Protools away .. heaven forbid .. I do
find GB easier to use for recording and editing .. Logic
I am comfortable using the many plug-ins and it's great
for 'polishing' .. but also see your thinking about Ozone 3 ..
it eats CPU .. but it's very good .. I'm a total beginner
with it .. and so far have just tried minor adjustments to
the presets it comes with .. and been very pleased with
the results, it is pricey but worth it IMO. To give you an idea .. I can get up to something like 33 tracks or so (mostly real audio in GB but some midi and loops) with effects etc and locking/freezing .. this was re-launched into Logic (more plug-ins used there.. mostly "Space Designer") and I optimized the drums down to one track .. total was about 28 .. and I could have Ozone 3 running on the 'master' track without trouble.
Oh, I agree totally about the fade out btw (bold?).. if I recall, I wanted to start where I did (with the double bass drums) ..but I think there was something I wanted to hide a little bit past the end point .. and from listening to it since, I would, to behonest, make a few more edits on my backing vocals that bug me a little.. *doh* lol.
I'm thinking of getting a Line6 POD XT Pro thang .. might wait a bit and see if they do a Pro/rack version of the X3 or something even better. [ Reply to This ]
