Keywords:
Rome. Train. Speed. Fountains. History. Ruins. Statues. (1)
Description:
This is a tune I did a while ago, but didn't post it because there were quite a few 'Train' songs going on MJ at the time, so I thought I'd wait a while. I don't know why, but when I tinkle on my keyboard I come up with Italian sounding melodies oftener than not ( probably from my sub-conscious) and this is one of them. At first I had mental images of those wonderful fountains in Rome, but as I added the up tempo beat I visualised a midnight train hurtling it's way through the Italian countryside and all the towns and Cities with the wonderful architecture, fountains etc. and with memories of all the dramatic history of Rome. So This is my interpretation of the midnight express train to Rome. Didn't know which genre really.

Instrumental

nice ..sweet cinematic theme my friend
its like mix two eras on one hurtling
train scenes ..the strings very much 60s
while the beat gives more into modern time

it is like two (or even more) eras travelling together, with all of Romes' history. Glad you liked the journey, M

Very nice piece, as Feter said (cinematic theme)
The beats very tasty, the strings very clean and in the right place. Like this melody !

Hi Yeman, &mdash 08/11/07 - 05:00:38 AM
Thanks for listening once again. The beat was what started it really, as I wanted originally to do a 'Trance' type of track, but my fingers played a melody that was too traditional for that LOL and the result is what you hear. Regards M

Hi Tom, &mdash 08/11/07 - 05:08:18 PM
I did try to write words for this, but nothing seemed to fit naturally and I think to sing to this it would take a tenor, Baritone or Soprano you know like an operatic type voice. Hey, If anyone wants to have a bash go ahead, but I can't get rid of the train beat now. Cheers M

A Watershed Dream &mdash 08/11/07 - 01:41:09 PM
I had some downtime at work today and listened to this song and actually dozed off. While dozing, this music became the soundtrack to a dream. I dreamed that I was in NYCs Central Park watching a water fountain show with many synchronized streams dancing in time with every nuance of your song. The water show was downright beautiful. Colorful lights flashed in between the streams as the water shot high into the air, swerving to the right and the left. And then the splashes!! I'm gonna play it again and see what I dream up next!!

Hiya PsexNYC, &mdash 08/11/07 - 05:17:43 PM
Hmmmm! Maybe I should start charging for dreams like this LOL.(it is that kind of music though I suppose). I just had to laugh at the thought of you dreaming all this. It sounds fantastic to be able to remember the dream so vividly, I never can. I think you should write and send me your dreams for Inspiration LOL. Thanks for the note anyway, Cheers M

Strange you &mdash 08/11/07 - 05:29:48 PM
should dream that, because as I said in my notes above, I originally thought of the 'Fountains of Rome' and that's what I was going to call it, but Respige' beat me to it, M

Dreams and Stuff &mdash 08/11/07 - 08:15:20 PM
I have been writing my dreams down since 1997...a practice I started after reading somewhere that you should practice writing down dreams immediately after waking up, no matter how vague the dreams may be. It is not often that I can dream to what my ears are hearing but when it happens, it's pretty cool. I guess the fountains had to come from your description, but Central Park?? What I saw in my imagination does not exist in Central Park. I'm still trying to interpret it. I'll tell you one thing though... That little brief, dreamy nap did me a world of good. After being awake already for 10 hours, I woke up feeling refreshed...but with the urge to run quickly to the men's room.

Yes... &mdash 08/12/07 - 07:54:10 AM
I read that too, but as I said I hardly ever remember my dreams. I'm glad you felt refreshed though and with all that water I'm not suprised, Cheers M

Sounds like a manic carousel.

It's so over the top I love it :-)

Lovely changes.

Manic Carousel??? &mdash 08/11/07 - 05:25:20 PM
Just because I couldn't get a beat that went diddley dee- diddley dah... LOLOL It's the midnight express to Rome can't you tell ?? (Don't even know if there's such a thing LOL).
With regard to the volume; I use Audacity to 'Amplify' maybe a couple of times and then the 'Leveller' is good and 'Normalize' gives a boost too. I started using it a while ago, when someone commented how low my volume was on a certain song, Cheers M

Audacity ? &mdash 08/14/07 - 01:18:58 AM
That's what I need as I'm always getting comments at other sites about low volumes (I guess as many of us work in GB we don't notice :-) )

Thanks

Cheers

There is one! &mdash 08/17/07 - 03:19:44 PM
>It's the midnight express to Rome
>can't you tell ?? (Don't even know
>if there's such a thing LOL).

I can't speak to whether there is a MIDNIGHT express to Rome, but there is definitely an express train to Rome. When my wife and I were there a couple years back, we got off the plane and walked right to the train station. Our first experience in Italy. We wanted to go to Trastevere, the suburb where our hotel was located and I thought I had done my homework.

At the train station (Fiumicino Aeroporto) the charts were iffy and the information lines were long, so I asked a train station employee whether the train at the platform stopped in Trastevere and he said yes, so we hopped on. After flying through a few stations, I noodled that we had caught ...

THE ROME EXPRESS!

Once we got to the train station in downtown Rome, it wasn't that big of a deal to purchase a ticket and backtrack. We took the adventure as a quick preview of the city we were set to explore.

So, about the song: it's not my favorite genre, but it is indeed a very catchy hook. I like the intimacy of the guitar-like sound when it appears. I think the main instrument (60s organ sound) is a little too buzzy for my tastes, but in truth I think it probably sets up the feel you were going for. There is definitely a playfulness here (a reckless glissando here, a Doppler-esque pitchbend there) that is infectious. It was a very enjoyable listen for me, thanks for the post.

I only just saw this comment as it was mid-stream so to speak. Thanks Mike for dropping by and I'm glad it was a pleasant listen for you. Thanks too on filling me in with regards to the rail services in Italy LOL. Nice story there, Cheers M

Cracking stuff Maurice &mdash 08/12/07 - 06:00:13 AM
Agree what you say about the trance thing - the first two notes and I thought I was back at Lexington Avenue, Hull 1989 ready to get on the trance train. Then that melody comes in and your away to Italy. I actually do think the two can go together in a contemporary way - yes it is a traditional melody, but there is also a very big Italian dance/trance/techno movement that is not too far removed from this. I would love to hear a really banging harcore version of this - would be quite interesting.

Shame you haven't got a vocal for this - I don't think you should worry about whether it needs a baritone or anything, just sing - you've got a very distinctive voice. I always remember that story of when they were recording the American Band Aid song (can't remember what it was called) and Bob Dylan was getting all worried about not having a 'pop' voice like Whitney Houston, or whoever, and the producer just told hime to relax and just 'sound like Dylan'. I reckon you should have a holler and see what happens:-))

Anyway, good work,
Phil

Just couldn't &mdash 08/12/07 - 07:49:31 AM
get anything lyric wise for this. Maybe one of those vapour-girl other dimension type voices they usually use in in Trance tunes would fit, wailing "night-trai-ai-ain" or "Ca-li-gu-la", or something like that LOL. ......Now where did that 'vapour-girl' disappear to ???,Thanks Phil, glad you approve, M

Maurice. Reminds me of the great organs that used to come out of the floor in cinemas years ago. Overall a very lush sound. Also love the 'accidentals'.

Funny how &mdash 08/12/07 - 08:06:42 AM
different people get a different impression from the sound. My nephew said that he felt he was in Blackpool Tower Ballroom LOL and I went mad with him, LOL. So you both thought it sounded like an organ, yet to me and a few others, It just sounds like a full Orchestra, but in fact you were both nearer the truth, as it was one of the GB synth pads I used as a basis for the rest. Glad you like it anyway Len (didn't think you'd be old enough to remember those theatre/ cinema organs), M

Interesting &mdash 08/12/07 - 09:11:52 AM
First of all, this has a wonderful flow the train image is quite apt here.

When I started listening it reminded me of a certain kind of techno/breakbeat tune that has strong drums and orchestral parts over it. But then you started putting chromatic passing notes in the bass, and diminished chords and all that, and the thing actually started sounding like a theatre organ. Ever heard a good theatre organ? They are magnificent!

Ok, what probably helps with the organ impression is that you clearly play your strings and choir on a keyboard, and playing chords instead of single lines, so they take on the phrasing that you get from keys, rather than something that would have been played by actual strings.

I love the overall sound. It's thick, it's joyful, it's gorgeous.

Victor.

If there's one thing I regret in life it's that I never learned to play piano (not that I ever had the chance when I was young), because it's one of the most exciting sounds, especially these days with synths and all. Hence I'm quite new to keyboard and my left hand is like a piece of wood and always has been, but my right hand is fine. That's why I can get away with synth pads or organ, because I can hold the chord with left hand. Anyway I'm really pleased that you liked it and thanks a lotfor the comment, regards M
