Description:
This is another retread I've been working on off and on for a while now. I went back and re-recorded the guitars and vocals. The percussion, bass an synths are the same as before, maybe just tweaked a bit. It's definitely a "wall of sound" piece with plenty of backing vocals this time and a wash of different oohs and aahs. It may get a little muddy at times, but it's a work in progress and it's making me push my Logic Express limits so I have to learn new stuff.
This is an old song, written almost 20 years ago now, when I was in college. It's part of a three-song series of maudlin, angst-ridden songs that were just perfect for the mid to late 80s.

Man this one is from one of the least favorite times of my life, although, I've had more than my fare share, I think.
Hopefully I'm done w/ the real stuff about it, but I am glad to have this little track of sounds to graciously escort me through the way back machine. You did a beautiful job of capturing a period in time, mister JG.
There's loads of sound in this one, sir. Must've taken an aweful lot of work. I do remember your first posting on this, but frankly, I'd rather not have to pick one over the other. One, does me as well as the other.
Certainly, this one is more rich w/ sound and most definitely, there's the resulting presence of more thought behind it.

maybe you can take over his crown. This is definitely a solid wall of sound. I love that slow-but-intense feeling you get from putting the right reverb on those drums.

Great song, very nice singin, killer guitar tone, loved this piece and its remembered me of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow sounds (OLD SONGS), very nice song !

I happen to know that there was no angst, anywhere, of any kind, in the Eighties...
Reminds me of some mid-period Neil Young, actually, when he was playing with incorporating some keyboards and vocoders and things... It's a neat song...
Since you're still working on it, I would vote in the direction of a more prominent lead vocal... And maybe hollowing out some space in the Wall O' Sound right in the middle for the vocal to sit in..
I continue to enjoy your piano playing, and I might also lean in the direction of trying either a stripped down piano-based version with a haunting vocal, or cutting it back in the mix to feature the piano at some point...
A touch of Vic Holman in some of those effected lead guitar lines...

damn good separation here despite the pile up. Good job - not an easy thing to do. I love how the bass winds through the tune and sets the mood with it's graceful movement. Cool guitar lead towards the end and the lyrics and vox throughout are stellar. I hear a little Floyd from the Valley Obscured By Clouds. Great tune. [ Reply to This ]

I can really hear the extra oomph from Logic in here Joseph. There seems to be really good separation (between vocals, bass, piano and "the wall"), and good frequency range. Sometimes the centre of the sound stage seems a bit empty, with everything coming from either the left or right - is that a left panned bass I hear??
I'd suggest moving the bass to the middle (or, if it's already there, trying some adjustments to make it SOUND like it's in the middle - this can be tricky). I'd lift the guitar soloing a little as well as your vocal. Maybe some shelving in the wall of sound instruments might help in adding even better separation. I was going to also suggest lifting the drums, but that made me realise that maybe just dropping "the wall" back a little (and centring the bass) might solve all the things I've already suggested.
Ed's idea of a stripped down piano version sounds like an excellent idea to me.

Nice liquid sky angst filled psychedelia here. Ah yes, the late 80's, politically super bleak, and then Bush got elected, ugh. Sometimes it did seem like sunset of the age of reason. sure fuels the feeling of angst....the piano is unexpected in this guitar drenched track...powerrful bass line....yes please keep refining the track.....right now what might help is working on the overall mix levels and voice to overall mix ratio...the guitar solo needs to be heard too.....killer song!
