Description
This is a tune that was originally written and performed by, The Orbiting, Matt Smith and Lisa Purdy. If you listen to it now, you might not like this version - I say, wait a couple of days before listening to it, if you haven't heard it, you should... - It's a beautiful thing.
First I'd like to say, you guys can't know how much I enjoyed working on this. - And I have two pretty complete, other versions to prove it. (I'll spare you) One for each of the three different seasons, and apparently different moods that I was in when I worked on them. It may explain why it sounds as if the four of us have been playing for longer than this particular gig. I can't hear each of these artist on this enough.
But mostly, I love this song and everything about it and in all of the many other versions that other folks have put together. None of them are to be topped. They are all very special pieces, in their own way. Lucky for us, we had some gorgeous writing and performing to work with.
All of the artist on this version gave me so much to choose from, that it was working w/ a pretty cool puzzle.
I'd been wanting to do something w/ Cat, for a long, long time. Finally... I love how Cat ended up helping to create an interesting and different angle on here. She gave me LOTS of intriguing pieces to work with. She ended up adding a very warm, and at the same time, a distant, on the edge toward dissonance, trance-like state to this. I LOVE how she ended up sounding!
Denny, overnight, as I recall, he "threw together" (his words) various different elements that opened me up to as many different approaches as I could imagine. They were all of the highest in quality and musicianship. I told him that I think that he'd make a wonderful studio musician, if he chose to. I liked having him in my back pocket. As it turned out, he ended up in the "front pocket" - very right on, stuff.
Lisa (Homey), Thank you! I love hearing you sing! But on here, my favorite part is when the Tennessee in you, slips out when singing, "it's our wedding day"... "doyee"... I love that! Thanks for being so patient with me and being such a great hear to sound off of. You were always right on w/ your feed back. You are truly gifted! Fat hugs!!!
I hope that you guys like it. It really was a labor of love!
Thanks for hanging w/ me. Dion
Vocals: The fabby, Le Debutant (Homey)
Backing Vocals: Another fabby lady, Mizz wonderful herself, Mystified
Guitar(s): Denny Borsboom (That guy... Eh eh eh...)
Words to to come... Lots of em, of course...

Lyrics
Saturnine
An empty book,
filled with photographs of you,
on the Great Wall of China,
Brooklyn, 1992.
Can't take back now what you've left behind.
We all fall,
(Endings never escape shame.)
We all fall
(Aren't you the one who never had a reason for love?)
We all fall
(and who will bear the blame?)
You're pulling faces now,
every feature in a frown.
It's our wedding day
and you said you didn't like my gown.
Can't give you now what I've left behind.
(and who's to blame?)
We all fall
we all fall
(and I'm not to blame)
Every photo fades,
the ink it drains away,
and in my empty book,
the pages start to fray.
I wonder if you know what you've missed.
We all fall...
An empty book,
filled with photographs of you,
on the Great Wall of China,
Brooklyn, 1992.
Can't take back now what you've left behind.
We all fall,
(Endings never escape shame.)
We all fall
(Aren't you the one who never had a reason for love?)
We all fall
(and who will bear the blame?)
You're pulling faces now,
every feature in a frown.
It's our wedding day
and you said you didn't like my gown.
Can't give you now what I've left behind.
(and who's to blame?)
We all fall
we all fall
(and I'm not to blame)
Every photo fades,
the ink it drains away,
and in my empty book,
the pages start to fray.
I wonder if you know what you've missed.
We all fall...

Authentic folk concert performance. Nifty. You all are really in a groove here. Love those lovely ladies' licks. The bass really provides great support and the shaker is just the right salt spray. Maybe add a touch of reverb to Ledeb's voice?
