Song Description

This all started from a recording of our grandson doing a little concert for us...

Here's the original recording (15 seconds).

Lyrics:
Best Day Of My Life

Matty_4: Life!

Matty_4: Best, best - day, day - of my life

Matty_4: Best, best - day, day - of my life

Matty_4: Best, best - day, day - of my life
Matty_4: Best, best - day, day - of my life
Matty_4: Best, best - day, day - of my life
Matt_14: Best day of my - best, best, day, day
Matty_4: Best, best - day, day - of my life

both: Best!

Made me hum along -- cool song. What're the singers' names?

the singer is Matty, he's 4 years old. i also added an imaginary 14 year old Matt towards the end...

thanks

Nice vocals &mdash 08/17/07 - 12:05:03 PM
This is a nice little composition, but I think your grandson really steals the show. I love his vocals. Great collab.

i love the way Matty belts out "Life!" - his coloratura is great. while i was working on this song, my wife would smile every time she heard his voice singing that part.

i simply built this song around his performance. he sang pretty much in a consistent key. and surprisingly he was singing in the key of C. I kid you not.

thanks

This is cool! &mdash 08/17/07 - 01:52:38 PM
You did a great job of creating the song around his voice, which is really good! How many kids his age can sing on key, even if we don't understand what he is saying? That kid's got a future here in MacJams. And you did an excellent job of showcasing him, Bill.

very cool composition you worked around your grandson's vocals. It's neat that the song has a world music feel and that the vocals are by a child in an unrecognizable language. Thanks for sharing this - it must have been a lot of fun to put together.

you bet! this was a blast working on. i really feel his has some latent talent.

i got the artist's permission to post this (and his Mom's) - just in case... you never know!

thanks

Great collab w/ Matty!!!! :-) &mdash 08/17/07 - 07:08:45 PM
This is so wonderful, Bill! I thoroughly enjoyed it. The music is really cool, and the vocals are terrific - and the Lyrics say it ALL!!! :-) You must undoubtedly be one of the Coolest Grandfathers to be blessed with.

i'm not sure exactly where those lyrics came from.

Matty does seem to like it when Papa drops by to visit.

thanks

Makes me wonder &mdash 08/17/07 - 09:23:23 PM
what he was actually singing. It sounds like you snipped just a few syllables out of it and built a whole track from that. Very cool stuff.

The upbeat synths and the simple drums are appropriate for the child's voice. Good arrangement overall.

Victor.

since a couple of people couldn't understand the words, i decided to post the lyrics, as few as there are.

i did very little manipulation of Matty's voice. i did cut out each word to tighten up the timing between them, and to do a little permutation of the words, since there was very little material to work with.

there is a little bit of pitch correction throughout, but not much. the initial "best" is flat: i needed to shift it up a half-step. the string of notes in Matty's rendition of the word "Life!" still amazes me - i did NOT add that, i just built some support for it.

i put up a link to the original 15 sec source recording if you want to compare before/after.

most of this song is constructed from GB loops, with modifications.

thanks

wow, thanks Tim.

initially i didn't even intend this to become a MacJams tune, it was just for fun. i wish i could explain the process i used on this song, but i don't really recall exactly what i did. i do remember there were lots of attempts that didn't work.

Matty also sang a version of "Under The Boardwalk" - but of course, i can't post that here since covers are prohibited.

Sweet &mdash 08/18/07 - 01:30:56 AM
This has a cool kinda eastern groove in the urgency of the music and percussion. Really clever use of the vox - it almost sounds like chanting.

Nice work.

if you take the loop "2-Step Summer Guitar 02" and play it on the "Chinese Erhu Violin" you get that eastern groove.

that, combined with a loop i built out of Matty's voice, formed the core of the song. i had that completed really early while making this tune.

the trouble was what to do with it to form a complete song. it took several days of playing with it to find the other elements like the horn stabs to make a complete song of it.

if you listen to the original source, the chanting really came from Matty - i just ran with it...

thanks

I totally get this and love it... &mdash 08/18/07 - 11:25:28 AM
Mind you, there may be, er, legal issues in that composition credit...Best have your lawyer talk to Matty's lawyer and iron it out...

I well remember having that experience with my son's tune, 'Hey Baby', holding my electronic tuner up while he was singing and discovering that he was right on pitch in the key of D...

And we had a big deal this week, as he was about to turn ten, when he finally learned his D, G and A chords on the guitar, and suddently realized that he can--sort of--now play his own song...

This is a great song and a great collaboration...Make sure it's properly backed up, so you can give Matty a fresh copy when he's fourteen...and eighteen...

keeping a special back up is an excellent suggestion. thanks for mentioning it. this has been a big hit with the family.

the recording of Matty's concert was just a spur of the moment thing my wife did. i tried a tentative little experiment without a goal in mind, just for fun, and it just turned into this. strange how things happen sometimes.

thanks

Very intriguing... &mdash 08/18/07 - 11:26:15 AM
Eh eh eh... You could feel from whence this came... - That in itself makes this a pretty cool little ditty.

LOVE the sound of those horns! And the guitars!

What a fun listen!

Very very cool, Mister SV!

Like it! Thanks! Dion

P.S. You come up w/ some of the most intriguing pieces. Consistanly - You never know what you're going to get, but it is alway an entertaining and joyful ride. Thanks for that.

i later found out that Matty's song, that i merely elaborated upon, was in fact an original composition. he was expressing how he felt about the events earlier that day. they had gone to a water park, and then his favorite restaurant, and on the way home he told my wife that it was the best day of his life. the original recording was made just a little later that day. no wonder he sounded "all into it" - he was!

thanks

This made ME smile, Bill, because... it evoked memories of time I spent with my son around that age when I was rehearsing in my studio and he'd come in and "help" me.

While I have some precious tapes of those "sessions," I would never have imagined doing what you did here.

Very cool --- and precious. ;)

i know what you mean. these things are like little "snapshots" that you carry around in your pocket for the rest of your life. once in while, it'll fall out, and you can feel good about it all over again.

thanks
