Description:
The 'Make Your Mac sing' discussion reminded me of this 'family poem' we wrote when the kids were little. We wrote it in Appleworks, then used the voices to 'perform' it in different ways. This was way back in 1996, when we got a beige 5260, and I was the first person in our neighborhood to get on the world wide web. Anyway, yes Macs could sing and speak back then, so when I read the Mac sing thread, I just rewrote the 'lyrics'in Appleworks, set speech prefs to 'pipe organ' and recorded it through QuickTime. Nothing fancy, but lots of fun. Oh, the melodic patterns are set by your use of punctuation and number of syllables in words. I actually changed this melody by using periods instead of commas in some places.

That's pretty cool, Kristy. I didn't know you could use QuickTime to record things. (Maybe it's a "Pro" thing.)

A very worthwhile family project! I'm sure your kids appreciate you involving them in your various tech-type enterprises.

I should be finishing up summer projects, but instead, I'm messing around with stuff like this - On well.
Yeah, the QuickTime recording is a 'pro' function. I always get the pro upgrade, because I find it's useful for lots of little 'utility' tasks. I think Audio Hijack does the same thing, but I'm used to the QuickTime interface. I used to do my movie projects on QuickTime before iMovie came out. When they got rid of 'simple sound' as a mac utility, they added recording capabilities to Mac pro.

I didn't know that about QTPro. Yes, I have used Audio Hijack too, and it's shareware, and works great. But it does seem to go through a lot of steps that do not appear very elegant. I would bet the QT Pro recording process is a lot slicker.

I too tended to play with these voices a lot, really raised eyebrows on fellow PC-users faces. There's a simple way to redirect the talking to an AIFF file *without* the QT Pro option, but you have to use the AppleScript Editor to write a script, and write it to an AIFF file... but if I gave away that secret, everybody would be doing it, and your cute recording here would lose some of its smirky uniqueness :-) Of course, then you'd show them, and write some choral fugue with the Macintalk voices, I know you :-)

I still can't post a picture to the forums even after someone's given me explicit directions. Applescript is something I just don't use. My programming experience is limited to writing games in BASIC back in 1978, all pulled from a very elegantly written flow chart that I made with a special template ruler. I can still do the flow charts. I don't do programming - not even Applescript.

but when I played it for them, they all remembered it, and could say it along with the computer. Then we all started talking about the old Mac it was originally written on. (One of Santa's reindeer put a hoof through the outer box during delivery, if I remember correctly.) And how they used to sled into the ditch, cause it was the only 'hill' in the neighborhood ... Amazing what one silly song can start.

it really made me laugh! I really like this stuff. Why dont you make it into a catchy children's melody? the words already have the longlasting quality of a true classic children's poem. I am waiting for a follow up on this!

My compositions have been pretty scarce, lately. I tend to go in bursts - I haven't touched the composing keyboard for about a month. it's nice that you stopped by to see that I haven't really 'jumped ship' .
I had the same problem as you're describing. i don't know if I just erased a group of check marks by mistake, or hit 'reset' or something. Anyway, i'm glad you got to listen, and maybe you got an idea for a family poem, too.
