Description:
This song is for my friends and anyone who has had to deal with loss. I wrote this as a reaction to having my own health scare and also hearing about friends' dealings with loss.
I independently asked Echoroom, Mystified, and Rebsie to contribute vocals to this song based soley on the description that it's about life, death, and moving on. They weren't given any other melody except the instrumental version of the song. I mixed the three vocalists' contibutions blindly and I'm pretty amazed at how cohesive they sound.
My vision for the vocals was to have three voices singing independently. They are:
Voice from the living: Echoroom
Voice from the divine: Mystified
Voice from the afterlife: Rebsie
(All vocals written and performed by Echoroom, Mystified, and Rebsie. Music written, performed and mastered by Miss Chaos)
Thank you so much Steve, Rebsie and Cat. Couldn't have done this without you. You three are brilliant.
Lyrics:
Echoroom's Lyrics:
Handmade, unbreakable, summer indestructible
Leaves turn, and take flight, you learn it's all unstoppable
Come come and gone in seconds
Will will you still be there?
Born in sunlight, the moon will shade its mother
warm bed, eyes shut tight, child the truth will smother you.
Fragile instrument, soon this song is over
Love is infinite, still no one here to hold you.
Come come and gone in seconds
Will will you still be there?
[Fear wont win me over
I can put myself to sleep (x2)]
turn turn it all, it all over
Turn, return it all, it all back to source
To the One
Spoken:
and everything will come as it will
and all of this will pass.
Golden stars laid across your eyes
Flicker out
Fragile silhouette, shrinking before your eyes
Cant fake time, or run from it, is it harder being left behind?
Nothing ever fails, free this life from living
Love is infinite, not this cross we're building
Come come ....
Rebsie's Lyrics:
The people you miss are OK
Over the dreaming sea, the dreaming sea
Falling through a rabbit hole
Slipping
In a tunnel of earth and stone
Don't fear the rabbit hole
Just slip slide away
Slip slide away

It is really phenomenal- &mdash 08/25/07 - 11:59:14 AM
that this was put together with 4 people bringing their own interpretation of such a deep, yet wide open theme. I really liked the total break and change in the middle of the song. I really liked the mixing, too (Now THAT must have been eternal tweaking.) The mix of voices with your own signature MC synths is really powerful. [ Reply to This ]

Great &mdash 08/25/07 - 12:18:40 PM
Love the drum sound you have here
I heard an early version of this with with just one voice...its amazing how all 3 fit together so well - very Enyaish in parts.
Vocals sound great (how could they not with these 3 singers) but I am not sure about the effectiveness of the spoken bit about 3 parts of the way through the song. Also, the synthi-bagpipe sound that comes in and out occasionally...(to my ears) doesn't work.
Very well done Miss Chaos - excellent production -highly impressed.

ethereal beauty &mdash 08/25/07 - 12:43:02 PM
What a fragile beauty you have woven here. There's a lot of restraint here, great composition, it feels like it could bust out at any time, but it doesn't, which makes it infinitely more powerful. Mysti's and Rebsie's singing really add sweet depth, the piano/synth/melody/harmonies, with the ups and downs really are breathtaking. And Echoroom's distinctive singing here is perfect. Great lyrics. Way way faving this one, wonderful job everyone!

the coolest part for me is where Rebsie's voice morphs into Mystified's voice... and they sang this 'blindly'. it's very cool to be at the control center of a mission like this. :-)

Pow! &mdash 08/25/07 - 12:49:33 PM
When I got the email notification and saw the members of this 'band' I said, "Geez!" out loud...okay...it may not have been "Geez!" but this is a family website.
Of course, you guys don't disappoint. What a great idea for a song, Miss C and I think you made some very wise choices for vocalists, Steve's staccato, strutting style of singing makes for a good counterpoint to Rebsie and Mystified's swirly dreaminess.
Knowing your love of reverb, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Steve's voice may be a little on the dry side.
When you say that you mixed it blind, do you mean that you slapped the three tracks together and found that the parts fit together perfectly? That's amazing. Do you remember last year when Rebsie and Country John both independently did a song on a Cori Ander track and he put them together and they mostly worked? I can't find the song on his page, anymore, unfortunately. It's kind of a neat phenomena.
This is a lovely song, beautiful song and I actually love the bagpipe, not to argue with Bryn, but I do think it's a nice touch in a song about life and death and moving on, since they're often played at funerals. [ Reply to This ]
Is that the 5 minute non-argument &mdash 08/25/07 - 02:09:40 PM
or the full half hour???
;-)
My comments on the bagpipe sound and the spoken word part were purely subjective...and not meant to detract from what is a great performance from all involved.
I agree with your point about the reverb tho Lisa (as a lover of reverb myself)
Again...very well done Miss Chaos and virtual band members

thanks! &mdash 08/25/07 - 10:40:15 PM
Muchos thanks to both of you. Thanks for reiterating the subjective point. I think the entire subject matter and production side of it is highly subjective -- how does one make audible his feelings about life, death and loss, especially when asking for the contributions of others. It's like asking "What does your fear SOUND like?", or, "What instrument sounds like 'strength' to you?" These are the sorts of things I asked myself. I'd be curious to hear others' versions. It's fascinating, isn't it?
Steve's vocals have quite a bit of reverb, actually, just a different plate than Rebsie's and Mystified's. Rebsie's voice represents the "ghostly" and occupies the middle section of the landscape. Mystified's represent the "angelic" and are the furthest away, reverberishly speaking (haha!), and Steve's, being the 'living', were meant to sound the closest in the foreground as well as the closest to 'human'; i.e.: uneffected. But I think you're right -- they could have used a tad more. There are some really cool nuances in his voice that are lost to too much reverb, so I struggled a bit with how much to apply. VERY good ears, both of you, for pointing out these things. And you brought up some very interesting brain food for me. Thank you kindly to you, Lisa & Bryn. For what it's worth, I had bagpipes at my babyshower. :-) Irish side of the family.

You know... &mdash 08/25/07 - 11:58:31 PM
I've been thinking about it and listening to the song today, and it might not be a reverb issue, at all. What I'm hearing, really, is that Steve isn't as upfront as I'd like to hear him (again with the subjective). He seems to be blending in with the instruments in spots and I'd like to hear him a little more clearly and that could be accomplished with some judicious EQ action, probably more effectively than with reverb.
We'll have to do the bagpipes in the desert, Bryn. I'm going to need some time to learn how to play, so I'll meet you in a year. Bring your kilt! [ Reply to This ]
You don't 'play' the bagpipes &mdash 08/26/07 - 02:10:11 AM
You squeeze them

Im wondering, was this mixed on headphones? I notice different nuances in a headphone mix compared to when I played it through my Tannoy monitors [ Reply to This ]
good Q &mdash 08/26/07 - 11:00:32 AM
Both. The mix gets played on my KRK monitors, sennheiser phones, Bose stereo, and Sony earbuds. Ironically, though, the final measure of a mix is the car stereo. :-)

What a wonderful, wonderful journey! And you know how I like aural mind trips, MizzC... Just a beautiful collection of sounds taking me away, here.
Always enjoy Steve's work. And this is yet another, perfect fit for him.
Mizz wonderful herself, Cat, well... whatduya say... Nice work, Cat. Another perfect fit for you too.
And the lovely MizzC has clearly provided a wonderful bed of sounds upon which to lay all of these striking talents to lay...
Made me a little nevous when the sound dropped off @ about 1/2 way through - Iiiii definitely wasn't ready to be done yet - As it turned out, it was brilliantly, another layer of many nice touches, adding to a very dynamic piece.
Excellent arrangment! Writing... Production... It's all pretty damn good!
Simply, a cool assed track! Truly outstanding!

There's lots to take in here, and I hope that I didn't forget anything else. I'm sure I did - this will undoubtably take a few listens to absorb - So, last, but certainly not of the least, thanks to you too, Resbie. Dion

by this beautiful piece of music! So much talent! Excellent production! Gave me the bumps. Not being native, even if Steve has a very articulated voice, it would be nice to have the lyrics written above. I get the general feel, but I think there is some great meaning in the words too?!

Hm... &mdash 08/26/07 - 11:19:54 AM
From the Mac OS built in dictionary:
articulate
• pronounce (something) clearly and distinctly : he articulated each word with precision | [ intrans. ] people who do not articulate well are more difficult to lip-read.
If you don't want people to hear what you are saying/singing I guess it is a bad thing - in this case I think not. You have got a very good singing voice and it works great on this song! Still I'll be back for the lyrics...
Thanks again and be well!

This is an incredible collab, for many reasons. You guys are all super talents. I appreciate the dedication, having just a few days ago lost a cat I've had for 13 years. There's a lot of coping going on here, even though he was just a pet. So that's what I'm feeling, and that's what the song is feeling, and it's a pretty unbelievably perfect mesh. Really amazing tune, guys. [ Reply to This ]
oh, so sorry! &mdash 08/25/07 - 10:47:47 PM
Our sympathies. Pet or no, they are little friends, aren't they? I know from experience that cats are very in tuned to a person's emotional state -- my cat knows when I'm sad and need a pal. I'm glad if this tune could give you strength. Our best wishes, David!

Life and Death &mdash 08/26/07 - 02:33:59 AM
When Miss C asked me to collab, i was a bit slow on the uptake, as I had a number of others on the boil at that time.
Then she sent me the track.
Initially the idea was not to do a 'normal' vocal, but to maybe speak through the track - hence this morphed into the very staccato verses.
Miss C had a very strong vision for this track, and I was really glad to be involved.
I'm on the other side of the world... gotta go now ... but will be back.

I thought....... &mdash 08/26/07 - 03:29:58 AM
I thought that the concept was wonderful, as was the singing and most of the backing instruments.
My only distraction from the piece was the first time the bagpipes came in. They sounded (to me) in key but out of register or played too low. To me they should have been more 'cutting' or trebly, but that's just my first impression. Strangely enough the second bagpipe phrase did not bother me as much. Go figure.
All in all an interesting and very well put together piece of music.
My parents recently lost their dog and the loss still devastates us. Having a loving member of the family suddenly not be there is heartbreaking, especially when we do things as a family where Tip would have been there with us, like more or less everything.
Tip was their grand-child substitute in a way and at 15 years old, was/is bound to be missed greatly.
Take care.
Paul. [ Reply to This ]

Hey Paul,
I'm so sorry about your folks' dog. That's devastating! My best wishes that they find comfort.
thanks for your critique of the song. I can see how that pipe sound is jarring. I actually had trouble working it in because it's 'cutting' against the other warm sounds. And actually shelving that sound was the most difficult part of the instrumental mix. I may take a look at it again. Thanks so much!

A really good example of the argument for collaboration - an amalgum of the best of each of the contributors "good bits" to make a cohesive whole. Love the backing and production Miss C, and the vocals are all very good. Great, touching lyrics.
