Description:
#27 of 52. I think this means I'm almost caught up. This another one inspired by (and perhaps to be included in) the Dark Waters II computer game, based on the NWN2 engine. The idea was that Esh and I would write some "tavern songs" which might be overheard by players. These songs would give a sense of the place and culture of the game world. I wrote the lyrics for this one, inspired by a traditional sea chanty. Eshinee sings it.
Lyrics:
On my first voyage, the captain
he thought it would be funny
to hire on an unskilled crew
who just were needing money.
We are tinkers, we are tailors,
and the fireman also cooks,
and not one can sing a shanty
unless we had the books.
CHORUS (1)
They tell me, “Paddy, get back,
take in the slack!
Heave away the capstan,
heave a pawl!
We’re leaving steady landy,
at your station you be handy,
rise tacks and sheets and mains’l haul!
And haul and—”
The first and second mate were nothing
if not blighters,
with the captain making three
broad, rough and tumble fighters.
When not fighting ‘mongst themselves,
they turned hard on the crew,
shouting out the orders
which none of us could do.
CHORUS (2)
They tell me, “Paddy, get back,
take in the slack!
Heave away the capstan,
heave a pawl.”
We were out ‘bout four weeks,
sailing on the ocean,
half the crew were taking sick
from the constant motion,
We were talking mutiny
and feeling darkly hearted,
when we found ourselves circled around,
back at the port we’d started.
CHORUS (3)
“Paddy, get back,
take in the slack!
Heave away the capstan,
heave a pawl!
We’re leaving steady landy,
at your station you be handy,
rise tacks and sheets and mains’l haul!
And haul and haul.”
