Description:
I wanted to do my own interpretation of my favorite Christmas carol without clouding it with too much detail. I'm very much inspired by Loreena McKennitt's celtic songs and I'm told it rings relatively true to her style while also preserving my own. I gave it my best shot, despite my isight mic and dated garage band software, hehe.

OK, Moon girl, first the bad news - this is very hissy - lots of background digital hiss - maybe some eq or filtering would improve this.

That out of the way, this is absolutely georgeous. The playing is excellent, the instrumentation suitably sparse (reminds me of sisters of mercy by Lenny cohen), but your voice... well, I dont need to tell you how wondreful this is, do I? A unique and emotive take on this, with great harmonies.

But you shoulda asked me ... i get compared to Bowie all the time... we could've done a take on the Bowie/ crosby version ... though that would make you Bing!

Great work

Steve

Thanks so much for the compliments! Yea, it definitely does need to be filtered to make it a little more clear, and I'll be improving on that once I figure out how. I definitely need to get a better mic in the meantime ;) Thanks again!

A great interpretation.... &mdash 08/28/07 - 12:29:14 AM
I was surprised to see this on here so early. I downloaded it as it was one of my favourites (English spelling) as a child.

I love how the laid back and simplistic backing fits so well with the singing.

Excellent.

Looking forward to more pieces from you.

Welcome to Macjam's.

Paul.

Precisely what this needs &mdash 08/28/07 - 07:47:16 AM
Capturing the meaning of this gorgeous tune... sung in simple sparse harmonies. Despite the cheapie microphone which does detract from the recording, your singing is quite delightful, sounds like you have had a bit of voice training? The slow addition of a little more instrumentation was nice, although after a while that single looped banjo(?) got to me. Possibly have that loop change slightly here and there.

Welcome to Macjams, I think you'll really enjoy it here... I certainly am enjoying your first offering! When you want to start talking techie, about what kind of mics/etc to add for better recordings, Macjams is the place to ask and get great advice from those of us who started right where you are.

Feel free to wander over to my page sometime... I haven't done a version of Little Drummer Boy (my second-favorite carol), my favorite is "Carol of the Bells", which you might enjoy. My take is sort of the opposite of your sparse version though, I go for Baroque :-)

ttfn,
Drakonis

Thanks so much for the compliments and useful advice! I look forward to becoming more knowledgable as far as editing, etc. As far as training, I'm a soprano in a Florida opera company, so it's something that I do a lot of and take seriously. For health reasons I'm stuck at home much of the time recently, but I found a new hobby at my desk apparently! Haha, thank you again.

welcome aboard &mdash 08/28/07 - 08:04:40 PM
A very smart arrangment... Gregorian minimalism.. and the subtle build with parts... your voive is beautiful, and your pitch is killer... it's the only way you can pull this off... don't let the end cut off... in the art of recording we have to cross our T's and dot our I's... small thing really

I really enjoyed this... you've posted an artful and sensative piece

thanx; Scott

Thanks for the comment! The end cutting off bothers me too, but I'm so new at this I don't even know how to fade it out yet. It will hopefully be corrected sometime soon :) Thanks again!

you still sing so lovely... you could cut off all your endings and I wouldn't complain much

Little Drummer Girl &mdash 08/29/07 - 10:33:03 AM
What a beautiful rendition of this song, which is one of my favorites, too. Your voice is just gorgeous, obviously, and the arrangement is fantastic.

If you want to fade out next time, go to Track>Master Track, then use the volume control line to slowly start your fade about eight measures before the end. I think the production details don't end up mattering too much as every other element is so great, but I'm selfish and would love to hear you on a top quality recording!

Thanks for posting this and welcome to Macjams. As drakonis said, this is a great place to learn how to improve ones production skills. I hope you'll stick around (and that you feel better soon).

Haunting indeed. &mdash 08/29/07 - 11:10:53 AM
Truly the most interesting and original interpretation of this song I've ever heard. The simple plucking (banjo is it?) blends surprisingly well with the soft voice - excellent voice by the way - even if the recording quality doesn't quite do justice to it! I'd tone down the orchestral percussion and add just a little reverb, to give the impression of a real stage performance. All details though - this really is quite haunting and beautiful!

WOW !! Incredible Vocal, the background music is great, the guitar playing is wonderful, really enjoyed listening to this piece, have you ever heard Winter Carols by Blackmore's Night ? Checkout this album and you can see how much your song is from that album !
Welcome to MacJams and wish to hear more !

Christy,
You've accomplished exactly what you set out to do: a new interpretation, a bit of Celtic sound; simplicity. I was surprised to see this in September, and hope you will fiddle with it a little between now and December and resubmit. You have a beautiful voice and harmonize with yourself like a pro. Very very pleasant. Welcome to MJ. We need more of your gentle style here.
Peace.
Paul
