Verse I
On a freight train out of Memphis, headed for L.A.
I'm leavin' all your memories behind
The winter winds are blowin' cold across the great divide.
But not as cold as you were the night we said goodbye

Chorus
Doin' forty miles an hour, in a boxcar headed west
Gotta to leave your world behind me, gotta to give my heart a rest
I'm hole'd up on a freight train, tryin' to get you off my mind
Goin' out to " Shaky City ", goin' down for one last time

Verse 2
With the rhythm of the boxcar, rockin' me to sleep.
In restless dreams I'm haunted by your face
I guess there isn't any way, to leave the hurt behind.
Cause even on this lonesome train I've got you on my mind

Chorus

Pickin' Verse

Chorus

Like that country pickin as well.

This has a happy sound which to me should be more sought after because I hear a lot of unhappy sounds here. And this is refreshing. Would like to see country more popular than it is.
It has a terrific heritage. Chet Atkins for one came from country and the list goes on. I remember Ring Of Fire by Johnny Cash when it crossed over to pop and I was bless to hear it on major radio. I think a lot of great pop stars became so because of counrty. Everlyl Bros started in Nashville at the Ryman etc.

Thanks for sharing! Good luck to you!

I don't know if you love Randy Travis's music but I adore his laid back country feel good style. It has bit of that in this, but that maybe just me because I love his music so.

Thanks for posting!

I've listened to some of your songs, and they're really great. I also watched the video of Swan Lake and it was amazing to watch you. You make it look effortless, but I know from first hand that it's anything but.

Thanks for the kind words, it's like a shot in the arm coming from you.

Yet another classic &mdash 08/29/07 - 07:47:15 AM
I love the name "Shaky City." It says so much, wonderful ambiguity and multiple meanings. Classic, strong writing. My only critique is the repetitive drumming you use, which sounds MIDI or beatbox or electronic and doesn't have the same personality as your performance and writing deserves.

Glad you liked the song. I programed the drums on my Yamaha SY99 back when I did this song in 92 or 93. Can't remember the year for sure, but no matter. I was and still am learning how to make it sound real.

Back then I'd find a grove that worked, and leave it alone in fear of mucking it up. Now that I do all my stuff on the Mac using Cubase it's a lot easier to fix those kinds of thing.

Thanks for the kind words, and the suggestion on the drums. I agree that this sound too mechanical and I'll try to keep that from happening again in my newer songs. All the songs I've posted so far were recorded over the same 3 or 4 year period.

Thanks again for listening.

brilliant country song! &mdash 08/29/07 - 02:43:26 PM
i have to confess i don't listen very much to country music. not that i wouldn't like it, it is just because i am more focussed on folk. and i have to say i am very surprised how sad and moving the lyrics are, when you just read them, without listening to that happy bouncy music. very nice lyrics ed and the music is great, very well played guitar and all it just works for me. i'm just wondering, how would the song look like, if you used exactly the same lyrics, but turned it into a folk song. that would be interesting for the comparison. you have got a GREAT voice. love your singing, very nice colour and very warm sound.

Go for it Pavlina. &mdash 08/29/07 - 07:22:08 PM
If you want to give it a try, feel free to see what you can do with it, I would be honored to have you do a version of it, and interested to see what you come up with. Personally I have never done folk music, so for me to try it would be a train wreck looking for a place to happen.

I get the impression from going to your artists page that you are quite busy, but if you can spare the time, then just do it.

Thanks for your kind words. I look forward to hearing what you come up with if you do decide to rework it as a folk song.

that would be quite a challenge for me. unfortunately i don't master any instrument, so anything i would come with would be just a sad and very painful try :) sorry boy. i am really not a musician. it was just an idea, which i thought you could be interested in. but thank you for your allowance to reform (deform in my case ;) i am happy you posted a lot of new things. will give them listen later on.
have a lovely day ed.

If I can find the time &mdash 08/30/07 - 08:58:43 AM
I'll see if I can do something in a folk style and post it, but it may be a while. First I have to take off my country hat and try to find a folk hat that fits.

Thanks for the input and encouragement Pavlina. I'll keep you posted once I start working on it.

Thanks Maurice.

I'm really glad you liked it, cause I had a lotta fun doing this one. As a matter of fact, I've had a lotta fun doing all of them.

But stick around, I'm uploading some more oldies but "goodies" tonight. Some aren't as technically well done as my earlier posts because they were done as I was learning how to make a mixdowns, but they're not too bad even so.

Thanks for listening again and commenting.

Genuine Country Sound &mdash 08/30/07 - 12:39:09 AM
Of the tunes that I've listened to so far, this is my fav. Perhaps because of the chugging rhythm or the theme. Your tunes are well crafted , well arrainged and sound professionally recorded. It would be nice to hear you do something new. I know. Fingertips. Maybe there is clump of grass or a tree root to latch onto. When I started recording with garage band I hadn't picked up a guitar in ten years, talk about rust. If you really can't play any more you could always try arrainging loops and working with the pencil tool, thats fun too. Regards

Thanks Mathew &mdash 08/30/07 - 08:53:32 AM
I can still play some, but like you said, I'm really rusty. "Fingertips" yeah I might be able to use that as a thread and work up a song around that title. I wrote it down and stuck it on the monitor to see if anything comes of it. You never know where or when it's gonna come to you.

Thanks for all the kind words. Hope you enjoy my other stuff as much.

Really enjoy the country sound on the guitars and the standard country bass - can't count how many times I've played that style. You have a real handle on the genre through years of doing it, and it really shows. Great to have some authentic country here at MJ.

country music!I played in a country band for a couple of years playing Merle Haggard,Waylon Jennings,Commander Cody, etc.
This is a great song-as good as anything by those guys.
I try to listen to new country music once in awhile, but most of it sounds phony and gimmicy.
You have a fantastic voice and the guitar playing is excellent.

That Old-Time Country Feel &mdash 08/30/07 - 10:03:36 AM
The father of one of my old college buddies played bass with Buck Owens for a spell and introduced me to some of the great country rock back then.

This has that same feel --- unpretentious, straightforward and fun.

You're pickin' and I'm grinnin', Ed.

Nice job. ;)

Hey, music is supposed to be fun sometimes, sad at others, but mostly it's supposed to help people connect with themselves, their world, and the friends and family around them. If this did that for you, then I'm satisfied.

Thanks for the kind words Joe, I'm glad it brought back some fond memories for you. It was a lotta fun for me.

I'm glad you liked this one and I appreciate the 10's man. Now I just have to figure out how to get my hat back on, since my head has gotten so swelled up. It does give me a lot of encouragement and make me want to keep at this song writing thing.

Excellent &mdash 08/31/07 - 07:18:53 AM
Very well done. If I had any critique at all is that the guitar sound doesn't quite fit the genre... it kinda reaches out and slaps me. Performance and production otherwise is top-notch.

I guess if anybody would know, you would, I've listened to your music and trust your instincts. Thanks for the tip on the guitar part. I hadn't really thought about that, but I will now. I plan to redo some of these and try to make them better so I'll keep that in mind for this one.

If you have any suggestions as to what kind of sound would make it better, please feel free to post it, I could use your thoughts on this.

Again thanks Rob for taking the time to give it a good listen and come up with that. I appreciate it a lot.

Now That's A Train Song! &mdash 10/03/07 - 03:13:22 PM
Thanks for the heads-up about this one... I was sold from the first twirl of guitar. There's such a simplicity and flavor to this, I can really hear those 120-pound bolted-bracket rails clickin' under the wheels as the forty-foot boxcar I'm riding in sways and creaks across the west.

Thanks Rik &mdash 10/03/07 - 05:08:56 PM
I was hoping you might like this one. It's kind of infectious and gets you rolling along with it as it goes. But at 40 mph, you ain't goin' nowhere fast I'll tell ya.

I had fun doing this song and tried something I hadn't done before this one. I broke the lead guitar break into to 2 separate parts, and used 2 different guitars on them. The first part is the Takanine GX 200 which has Humbucker pickups on it, and the second part has the Ibanez RX40 with the pickups set in single coil mode so it sounds like a Stratocaster. If you listen to the lead break, you can tell when it switches from one to the other immediately.

Anyway, thanks again Rik for stopping by to listen and for the kind words. I'm glad you liked it.

This is a great uptempo tune with all the bells and whistles of what makes country so fun to listen to. You do it as well as any... and I mean that. A fine line between great unknowns and the famous. You got the country chops...

Yeah, we need you here and more of the country sound.

Thanks again Jack &mdash 10/13/07 - 08:12:17 PM
This one was a lot of fun for me because it gave me a chance to try to put it all together.
That's some pretty high praise Jack, and I thank you for it from the bottom of my heart. But there are a lot of, how did you say it, "great unknowns", here on MacJams that can play circles around a piker like me. All I have going for me is that I really like putting out a good song, and I have the will and the patience to just keep plugging away at it until it sounds about half right. Then I post it and learn from others how to fix it and get it the rest of the way there.

Thank you again for your kind words Jack, they are appreciated. And for taking time to listen and comment.

Your new friend.

nice! &mdash 05/16/08 - 01:05:09 PM
I liked this song quite a bit. It may be "dated" in terms of contemporary country (even back in '91, arguably), but it sure feels good! The lyrics, imo, are solid yet perhaps not spectacular. I was hoping for a "little more punch" in the storyline somewhere. Still, all in all, this is very well done and right in sync with the classic country I love!

Thanks John &mdash 05/17/08 - 01:56:40 AM
This is one of my earlier tunes, back when I was just starting to learn about song writing. I'm still learning and always will be, and maybe someday I'll actually get better at it.

I'm glad you liked the song John and I do appreciate the comments and critiquing. I always like it when someone give me comments that help me to learn and try yo get better. This song is weak, especially in the chorus and bridge. But it's done now and hopefully I won't make those kinds of mitakes again. (Truth be told I probably will, but maybe not as often)

Thanks again for the kind words and the comments on the song. They really are very much appreciated my friend.

Be well and stay cool John

Ed
