Marry (2)disappointment (5)escape (11)despair (12)regret (25)George Formby (1)caribbean (10)shostakovich (2)debussy (4)eric coates (1)My Fair Lady (1)
Description:
First of all thanks to Rebsie for her inspired vocals on this :-)

Then thanks to the MJers who contributed their own little masterpieces to the congregation. So in alphbetical order in their MJ personas

Echoroom, Epileptic Gibbon, KristyJo, Peacepiano, Smokeyvw, and Vic Holman - I do hope I haven't missed anyone out as I also got a few from the Zoom board as well and it got a bit messy.

Anyway, before our hero wins the lottery his wife is dozing in front of daytime TV and half watching a documentary on George Formby and a sex scandal involving Shostakovich, Eric Coates and a herd of prize Friesans. And thereby lies a tale ............

I'm going to be without the internet for a couple of weeks so I may not reply for a while.

Your opinions on the song and the mix are very welcome as I sort of lost it when I was mixing.

Graeme Hobbs wrote most of the lyrics and most of the melody and I did the rest.

Cheers

Dick

Lyrics:
© Hobbs/Langford

Of all the people in the world I had to marry you
I had to marry you, I had to marry you
Any old Tom, Dick or Harry really wouldn't do
I had to marry you my dear

Verse 1

My father led me to the altar
Gave away his only daughter
Six months gone and in the family way

I knew he had those thoughts of murder
But he wouldn't take it further
Didn't want to spoil my special day

Mum blamed herself and all the clubbing
Wouldn't stop her bleedin blubbin
As I spoke those binding words “I do”

Chorus 2

So we settled down to wedded bliss
To baby poo and baby piss
I thought my heart would burst with happiness

We tried to work the Kama Sutra
acrobatic stuff don't suit yer
always ended up in such a mess

I was always dancing crazy
Had the hots for Patrick Swayze
Loved to watch his Dirty Dancing steps

Bridge

I know you're not a bad bloke
You're hardworking and you're kind
It's just the daily drudgery
Drives me out of my mind

Verse 3

You know I never liked your mother,
nor your sister or your brother
Your old man used to tell me dirty jokes

Nothing really lasts forever
People change just like the weather
I guess we're just like all the other folks

There must be more to life than this
An alarm call and a weekly kiss
What I'd give to simply walk away

Chorus 3

in a demented sad sort of way... definitely sounds like a musical needs to be written around it, perfect sounding... I wonder who could do something like that... Dick? :-) Great job Dick, Rebsie, and an incredible cast, wow! Sounds GREAT! Wonderful lyrics, well performed.

It's getting there bit by bit but taking it's toll on my sanity. I need to do more collabs on these songs as they give me great feedback and balance my extremes.

Are you trying to tell me that George Formby only appears once in the keywords on this site?! What is the world coming to, me ole cockney sparra? Anyway, I listened to this after coming down the ole apples and whatnots and you can paint me bottom blue if it didn't warm the cockles of this ole Gibbon's heart. Not so much George "Turned out nice again" Formby as Ian Dury and The Blockheads meets The Two Ronnies, which I genuinely mean as compliment, squire. Rebsie has taken to striding around the house like a pearly queen and now I see why. A pleasure to contribute to this diamond in the rough, if only in a very small way, guv. Bless ya, sir and compliments to my fellow gentlemen and ladies in the choir.

So &mdash 08/29/07 - 05:29:48 PM
Rebsie has become the pearly queen of Cheltenham! I expect a market stall will follow soon. What a great fun song and where did that accent come from? You've been watching too much Eastenders coz they don't talk like that in Peckham where I come from!

Thanks to you all for a fabulous collaboration.

Well, although I'm from Cheltenham originally I spent my childhood years in Essex. I never picked up much of an Essex accent but obviously it was there in my unconscious when I needed it!

and thanks Pete !

Actually the beginning of this opera is set in Basildon (wear I woz brought up ;-) ) which was an overflow town for the East End. I have this theory that they were so upset about being moved out of London that they exaggerated their accents to retain their London identity and that's been passed down through the generations. The pub in Basildon (The Winged Horse in Luncies Road) I've set some of the action in is now more Eastenders than Eastenders and they don't even realise it

How each collaborator added/influenced this gem: basically Dick did most of the work and I just sent a few encouraging emails.

Patrick Swayze doesn't do it for me at all I'm afraid. So if my "phwoooar" sounds more like I'm throwing up - that's probably why.

Amokopera is really going somewhere and I can't tell you how privileged I feel to be involved with it.

It's been enormous fun to work on too and I loved every minute of it.

A lot of collabs are about putting icing on a ready-made musical cake. This one was different because I was in on it right from the start and got to see it evolve from a single uke track to the amazingly rich and imaginative thing it is now, and that was a privilege too. I often struggle with arrangements myself and watching your creative process at work has been constant delight and wonderment. Thank you thank you.

Excellent job... Loads of fun and funny all the way around in this one, although I have a sneaking suspicion that *Graeme Hobbs* is the nom de plume of Dick's wife. lol

Rebsie is frighteningly convincing in her featured role. :D

One suggestion, Dick... I think perhaps the only thing that's missing in the mix is the sound of flying, crashing dishes --- and maybe the singular tone of a well-placed frying pan on Hubby's head. ;)

Bloomin' marvelous! And I've just suggested a newbie listen to Rebsie as a good example of MJ English folk!

This was so much fun to listen to and obviously so much fun to do.

I'm flattered that you recommended me, thank you. This song is as good an example as any of real English folk ... as far as I'm concerned it doesn't come much more authentic than this.

It certainly was as much fun as it sounds. I had to edit out the sound of me having a good old knees-up round the room during the instrumental bits because it was impossible to keep still while recording this.

Really loved this one Dickie. The sense of humor, the uke, the subject matter the chorus..............hell of a tune. Bawdy and fun.

Tickled my British side of the family it did. My Hyde's came over around 1638 or so coming through Massachusetts.

Missed this when it was released Dick - but glad I found it in the end. Great stuff. Fantastic tune, and a great performance all round. There aren't enough steel drums in popular music, so I'm glad you gone at least some way to redressing this...

...and love the fade out. Inspired:)

A perfect... &mdash 10/28/07 - 12:00:55 PM
...theatre piece. How much fun this is from the opening notes. The break-out orchestration after the first pass is brilliant and you sustain that feeling throughout especially with the little background blips and blops to punctuate the tune. Very tastefully restrained, Dick. ... Rebsie's vocals are the perfect vocal rendition. No American could pull that off, even faking it! Well done. My only critical thought--not criticism!--is with the full chorus of voices the last time through: no doubt you already sense a bit of a pitch issue. On the other hand, if this is the combination of lots of collabs sending around sound files around the world, then it's only a small quibble I have with it. In every sense the composition, arrangement, and delivery are top drawer. I'm already looking forward to the next installment!
Peace.
Paul
