Description:
This is my 3rd and last entry for Analogapalooza - recorded in my apartment on NY's Lower East Side in 1984, on a Tascam cassette 4 track machine. Every Sunday for a long while Kevlar of JOAN and MUDMEN and I would get together and write and record a song in one session.
This Sunday we invited Richard McGuire - the bassist from Liquid Liquid to join us.
Historical note: Richard's bass line from his song Cavern went on to be used as the sample behind White Lines by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - then later by Duran Duran.
Richard is playing bass and spindle back chair percussion - Kevlar is playing guitar and singing lead - and I sang back-up, programmed the TR808 and played the synth (Sequential Circuits Pro-One). Somebody played clave too - but I don't remember who.
Sue was the name of one of my cats who sat in on our sessions.
Lyrics:
Wha?

Tascam cassette 4 track

laughin 'n dancin' &mdash 08/29/07 - 08:32:14 PM
kind a like sitting on a Talking Heads show. Seems most of the new wave around '84 had a solid beat going. And no exception here,
By chance anyone with a Flock of Seagulls hairdo?
Nice entry Bud, cool that you kept track of this old stuff. [ Reply to This ]
I had a modified Bowie wedge &mdash 08/29/07 - 09:04:43 PM
dyed red. I only wore mascara on stage or after midnight on the weekends. Kevlar sported a blue tube.

Ahhhhh...those were the days!
Hypnotic, groovy and twisted. Can't get enough of this stuff! [ Reply to This ]
Did you paint one fingernail black? &mdash 08/29/07 - 09:40:46 PM
My other fashion statement of the moment was wearing my right sleeve rolled up and my left down and unbuttoned - guitar hero style. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Excellent Groove &mdash 08/30/07 - 10:24:55 AM
...and it's always great to hear furniture as part of the rythym section too. I love that guitar! Reminded me of Funkopolis by Die Warzau... the touches of synth bring me right back to those days. [ Reply to This ]
Richard plays a mean chair &mdash 08/30/07 - 02:26:33 PM
I had an old oak spindle back chair that he played by dragging a drum stick across - like walking by a picket fence. You can hear it clearly in the mix. Glad you enjoyed this little item.

We did have fun &mdash 08/30/07 - 02:29:28 PM
I miss my living room studio and free Sunday afternoons. My wife is an artist and back then before we had kids she would go to her studio to paint and I'd take over the apartment for music. Thanks for stropping by and commenting - T Heads were definitely in the air back then.

Richard had a very special talent &mdash 09/02/07 - 10:08:36 AM
on the bass - and Kevlar is one funky dude as we all know. I heard the mule drank you under the table - but I won't spread it around. [ Reply to This ]

I'm just a recovering catholic schoolboy &mdash 09/02/07 - 10:17:05 AM
attempting to undo the influence of Sister Mary Alphonse (aka Fangsy). We took our sessions very seriously and were high on life (and the occasional joint) - but that was mostly for the engineer - me.
Glad you enjoyed this one. [ Reply to This ]
Edgy and nevrvy &mdash 09/02/07 - 02:00:45 AM
christ, the vocal line sounds like something I'm working on! So that shows my roots, too. This has a great Talking Heads/ Bunny men vibe, an 80's dark dance groovy. Great bass -line ... I may have to use it as well!
I had dyed black crimped hair - looked like a pot plant.

Are you saying you were a pothead? &mdash 09/02/07 - 10:20:27 AM
I loved the Bunnymen and the T Heads at the time. If you haven't heard Liquid Liquid - do your best to find them - they were great. [ Reply to This ]

This is not my beautiful bud... &mdash 09/03/07 - 12:57:13 PM
Ah the damage one can do with four tracks and four faders...And a TR808...
I think I had a TR303 or something...whatever was bottom of the line...I loved to plonk out conga/bongo things with it on any spare track...
A very cool groove...and very listenable, for all that it doesn't have a lot of up-front solo or vocal action...

We were democratic to a fault &mdash 09/03/07 - 06:29:20 PM
we all held back. On many of my tapes from that era it's almost like we were waiting for someone else to show up. Thanks for stopping by. Where were you then? [ Reply to This ]
Where was I? &mdash 09/03/07 - 09:58:56 PM
Well, I was ALMOST there...I was writing my avant-garde dramatic debut, entitled, 'Waiting For To Go'...But it turned out to be way too long until I finally went... [ Reply to This ]
What An Ass! &mdash 09/05/07 - 09:38:13 PM
LOL!
Great stuff bud!
You've got a great ass!!
Analogapalooza should go corporate.
It's so hard to believe that you were the original Simon LeBon.
What an ASS!
I'll probably be banned from MacJams.
It's been great.
Sorry.

I heard somebody saw &mdash 09/06/07 - 09:03:38 AM
an Analogapalooza T shirt at the Vans Warped Tour.
Probably just a rumor - but the artwork is killer sweet.
Glad you dug this funky ditty.

Cool bass line &mdash 09/06/07 - 07:40:21 AM
With lots of very neat percussion going on.
Nice and funky. Kind of a David Bowie sound.

Kevlar is a great natural musician - always there with an improvised vocal and little guitar groove. My daughter pointed out the similarity to Suicide - but I can see how you get Bowie here too. [ Reply to This ]

This is oldskool house. Wow back in 1984? I like the talking heads feel to the lyrics. Nice one. Your piece with michael2 is awesome!! An MJ classic in my book, very emotive and dense. [ Reply to This ]
