Jiguma (15)Macaudion (7) ()
Description:
This is a remix of Jiguma's tune, "The Golden Days". After receiving a favorable response from Neil on the remix that I'd done on "Saturnine", I responded to his comments, that I would beg like the lessor privileged in asking him if I could redo one of his babies" - And he responded back, "pick a song... any song"... - Eh eh eh... Well I had already had in mind to ask if he'd allow me the honors of playing around w/ "Golden Days"... - After hearing the first few notes on this, I was sold! How could ya not...

Neil's original mix: http://www.macjams.com/song/34560

I think that this is one of Neil's more exceptional writing moments, and it prolly doesn't hurt that this tune captures so well, a head space that I've been loitering in lately.

I think that this is such a cool tune! I just hope that you guys will still think so after hearing me indulge myself with it...

Thanks, Neil! Cheers!

Thanks for stopping by. Dion

Ah yes, I remember the collaboration request and the gracious acceptance by Neil. Your indulgence is quite acceptable! Way to go, Dion.

economical acoustica &mdash 08/30/07 - 01:52:26 PM
What I like in this remix is its economy of texture compared to Neil's original. The sound is easy on the mind and not overdriven. And sounds like you reversed the flute at 3:10 and 4:47. Shades ofM agical-Mystery-Tour-bring-it-on-let's-get-high. Intimate and kind.

Hello Richard &mdash 09/01/07 - 05:27:12 PM
Thank you for associating kindness to my efforts here. It's a very intimate tune, and you can hear the kindness in Neil's voice, so it seemed like the thing to do. Sometimes we get it right, ya know...

Much appreciated! Dion

nice &mdash 08/30/07 - 05:29:43 PM
i really liked the original and i love what you've done to it. nice use of percussion, and are the vocals a little louder? great job.

Hi Micheal &mdash 09/01/07 - 08:14:49 PM
Thanks for commenting. Is the voice louder... Hard to say... Maybe so... I don't know... Are you saying that they're too loud? I was thinking that they could be a tad loud, and did that to keep from having the percs drown Neil out. But thanks for listenging and commenting. Dion

too loud? &mdash 09/02/07 - 10:31:46 AM
difficult to say. i would probably have brought them down a hair, but i didn't think they were too loud on my first listen (just louder). now that you mention it though, maybe they are by a hair.

Cool version &mdash 08/30/07 - 05:51:01 PM
I really like the way you've mixed this Dion - maybe you could be my sound engineer ;) This is probably more in synch with how I'd originally envisaged the song than my own version, and gives me some food for thought for future songs. Needless to say, the percs are perfect. Lien Retrop still on backwards guitar too - that's a relief!
Thanks for doing this Dion.

Well... &mdash 09/01/07 - 08:33:35 PM
I think that you know how I feel about all of this, Neil... We can be each other's sound engineer ; )

Shake....

Thanks for letting me play around w/ this, Sir. I was truly mesmorized in the process. I have a little time off, and I spent all of my free time working on this, as you've likely figured out.

Can't wait to do this again. Cheers! Dion

perfect balance &mdash 08/30/07 - 05:55:47 PM
Oh, sooooo nice. This just swims in the warm stuff. My brain is gell'in.
Neil unplugged and blended with sonic goodies.

Hello John &mdash 09/01/07 - 09:16:45 PM
Thanks for the props on balancing, and everything. Neils writing and playing has a way of persuading one to hang out near the "brain geln warm stuff" is... Hehehe...

It's Friday morning &mdash 08/31/07 - 11:34:19 AM
And this is just like I'm feeling. Neil's songs are pretty awesome, and it's a treat hearing your take on one of them, Dion. It's got a definite Macaudion feel, with the gradual layering of cool percussion, and obviously it still has the Jiguma vibe in Neil's singing and songwriting. Very enjoyable listen to wake up to today.

Yo! David &mdash 09/01/07 - 09:43:32 PM
I'm certainly glad that this worked out to help your Friday along. Funny that you said that - I was thinking of waiting until Sunday to post this, thinking that it would have made a better listen on a Sunday morning - As if I could predict when someone might venture over to this page...

In any event, thanks for stopping by for a listen. And thanks for commenting too! Dion

o man.....this simple bare sparse vocal/guitar and percussion just works out great......somehow i really got into the lyrics more on this version...percussion was a great addition ...adds much flavor to the plate....many bows....

I'm glad you said bare and sparse... &mdash 09/01/07 - 10:05:20 PM
I was actually concerned that what I did might be too active, for what Neil had done - So, thanks for stopping in and reporting, McB

Well Dion... &mdash 09/01/07 - 01:22:15 AM
.... some one finally stripped Neil naked. And it had to be you.

I'm a great fan of Neil's music and you brought a fresh, intimate approach to this song.

Another great job, macca. This is a more intimate version - sounds like neil is whispering in my ear ... which is a good thing ... I could use the advice!

Lovely work

Hi Steve &mdash 09/04/07 - 08:03:38 AM
Thanks for listening and commenting. What I really like about this place is, folks tell me things about what I did, and I don't usually have plan, or some theoretical reasons or approaches to what I do. I just do what I do...

Appreciate your comment. Dion

Perfect intervention &mdash 09/02/07 - 04:26:29 PM
This is a very subtle addition to the tune. I think it brings a lot out in it. Somehow makes it a little more... social (thats the best word I can come up with). It goes from one man on stage to a man surrounded by friends, contributing to the melody. This is very enjoyable on the ears. Well made.

Hey Mister Logic &mdash 09/04/07 - 08:43:05 AM
Thanks for stopping in for a listen, and sharing your thoughts on this. Obviously, I like Neil's music, and on many levels. But one of the things that I really like is, his singing voice, and how it lets on to his personable nature. So, it really does mean alot to me, that those characteristic traits that I like about him were somehow made to be more present, by whatever was the culmination of efforts here. For me, it doesn't get any better than that.

Apprecieate your stopping by. Dion

What a gift! &mdash 09/03/07 - 01:17:19 PM
Dion, you really gave us all, and I suspect primarily Neil, the gift of experiencing this song in perfect simplicity... A real learning experience for those, like me, who tend to fill track after track...

This ends up being a very immediate, intimate and present performance...

Plus, it has backwards guitar...

What's not to like?

catching up... &mdash 09/30/07 - 10:46:17 AM
Hi my friend, it's been a while...:)
I'm starting to listen to the line up of fav'd songs in my inbox after I've been having a looong slow period at MJs...

You play those drums and things pretty well my friend. And there was lots of stuff you laid your hands on here. At first I though they came on a bit crowded at places, but listening again I think they are right on. As long as Neils part is so stripped to the guitar, bass and vocals, you have room to move.

Some of those rhythm combinations is pretty advanced and impressively done.

mic &mdash 09/30/07 - 10:53:04 AM
You have got a very good sounding recording of those drums. I have a couple of hand drums my self, but it always seems so hard to get a good sounding recording... Especially the largest one, a djembe with a deep sounding bass boom.

Any tip in how to get a good recording of it?

kool &mdash 05/30/08 - 09:02:42 AM
sound, i dont know what you play or how you do it but the end result is a result. Lyrics are sublime and the horsey voice suites the occasion. The backwards guitar thang is that a guitar? i want to get that sound. Percussion is pro, you got the vibes. Cheers
