Description:
Writing and singing: Steve Craig (echoroom)
Bass, piccolo bass and organ: Andrew Koplan (Drew Kopr)
Other sounds and mix: David Thomas (perceptualvortex)
As usual it's a blast working with the kickass bassist Drew Kopr. And this time I also have the honor of collaborating with echoroom. Steve's lyrics and singing really shaped what started as a simple 7 jam between me and Drew into a full on rocking song that I'm proud to have mixed.
The song art is derived from a 1917 poster by Achille Luciano Mauzan.
Excess volume recommended.
Lyrics:
So young, so dumb
So young, so dumb
So young, so dumb
I am young and beautiful
Baby boy for a future war
Completely disposable
Che Guevara without the cause
You can make it on your own
No, no, no
You can make it on your own
You take me from my lover’s arms
Sign me up for the big parade
I am dumb and gullible
Che Guevara for data age
Got a holiday in the sun
Tell my mama I won’t be home
You can make it on your own
No, no, no
You can make it on your own
No, no, no
You can make it on your own
The revolution is postponed
You can make it on your own
Working for the government
Paying off the electorate
You can buy a mini gun
You can’t smoke a cigarette
So young, so dumb
So young, so dumb
So young, so dumb
So young, so dumb
Give me something to control
Get me out of this fucking mess
I’ll give you my bionic love
Che Guevara upon my chest
10,000 really dead
Buenos Aires a smoking hole
You can make it on your own
No, no, no
You can make it on your own
You can make it on your own
No, no, no
You can make it on your own

Great lyrics (admittedly not the first thing I usually notice on a pv post!), and incredible production. Vocals, playing (all good, but the drums are a particular fav) all first class. Outstanding post.

Good Song, good groove &mdash 08/31/07 - 03:16:00 AM
I like it all--
lyrics, arrangement, mix, song, style.
Particularly like the like metallic percussion doing the syncop. rhythm-- what is it? Muted cowbell? Something from the kitchen?
Seems like the right mix of talented individuals to make "the band."

Thanks, man, I'm glad you like this! That metallic percussion is made of loops called 'brake drum percussion'--maybe you've heard of them :) I love bells and cowbells, but I try to keep them under control, haha. But I'm glad you like the way I used them here.

Ever get involved in writing a song that you like soooo much, you can't believe that you were actually involved.
For me, this is one of those. I got the final mix last night and was grinning, dancing round the hotel room.
Dave and Andy - it was an absolute joy working on this, and one of the things that was so good was that we kept going at it until everyone was happy. Production and playing are ace, but to me, it's just an ace pop song.
Thank you for involving me in this, i'm really proud of this.

Let's make another rocker when we can.

Great experience &mdash 09/01/07 - 09:37:58 AM
It has been a very long time since I actually developed a tune with a band, but this was definitely one of those experiences. Each one of us authored this baby. I just wish Dave was not in Seattle and Steve in London....too many miles separate us for me to buy a round!!

Vortex expanding!! &mdash 08/31/07 - 12:17:43 PM
What a tight, well-mixed/written song. Besides Steve's voice, which is perfect in this musical setting and sounds great I was especially impressed by the drums. The broken up beat is fantastic and adds a lot to the already solid guitar soundbed. And what's more - this collaboration sounds more like a band that's played together for years, rather than sound files mixed together. That's a surprisingly difficult thing to achieve and you guys really outdid yourselves. I'm totally impressed with everything here. And the vortex is growing bigger and better with every new song...unstoppable [add some pulsing sci-fi sound effects] [ Reply to This ]
Together for years &mdash 08/31/07 - 02:33:26 PM
that's an interesting comment - there was a great amout of collaboration between all three of us on all aspects of this song ... the structure , was the chorus strog enough etc.
Dave did a number of mixes and we all had our say, so i do think this is a true group effort (we even debated the use of the word f**k in the song), although the mix of this is all Daves work (by the way, you really nailed the bridge dave!) [ Reply to This ]
pulsing sci-fi sound effects &mdash 08/31/07 - 05:27:04 PM
Thanks, Parichayaka, I really appreciate that. I was also impressed by the extent to which this sounds like an actual band. As Steve mentioned, it was truly a group effort with lots of iterations of the mix, and emails about what might be changed. Their feedback to me was invaluable--and in some ways this collab really was like a band practicing together and discussing the music.

So Young &mdash 08/31/07 - 03:58:01 PM
Hey guys,
This is ACE! I actually downloaded it before it got to the bridge. I almost forgot to fav it, I had to "own" it so bad. Steve's voice is really suited to this rock anthem thing. I am excited to hear him stretching out and Rawkin'. Tastefully delayed and echo'd. I think Steve's voice could be just a little more out in front though, that's just me. The drums are particular well done. Something I can never give enough time or effort to. Kudo's. The lyrics are great, vague, suggestive leaving just enough to the imagination. Great bass and soft synth's. Really huge. [ Reply to This ]

Hey Philip! Last night in Kenya, I'm home tomorrow. I know i told you about this ... it was great to do such a rockin' track ... `i'm getting my voice warmed up for when we do some Black Angels drone tacks! As for the drums, you've no excuse now you've got BFD! Thanks for checking this out ... having worked with you and now Dave, i don't ever wanna try mixing a track on my own again!

Hum... &mdash 09/01/07 - 06:01:35 PM
Pressed for time, I'll let the dictionary expound upon my feelings about ALL of the performances here...
We'll start with: awesome
adjective
inspiring awe or admiration or wonder; "New York is an amazing city"; "the Grand Canyon is an awe-inspiring sight"; "the awesome complexity of the universe"; "this sea, whose gently awful stirrings seem to speak of some hidden soul beneath"- Melville; "Westminster Hall's awing majesty, so vast, so high, so silent" [syn: amazing]
And you fellas did "amaze":
1. to overwhelm with surprise or sudden wonder; astonish greatly.
And once again, it was all in the right hands of Mirster PV, himself. This guarantee that all of the above will the end result in producing, said, performances!
Since all has been forewarned about the "explicit" nature and content on this page, and If you can say it here, Steve, then so can I... This is
fucking hot!
Thanks guys! Dion

A jam that turns out to have something to say... &mdash 09/03/07 - 01:29:07 PM
This works on every level for me...it kicks, it rocks, the lyrics, singing, production, everything is strong, strong, strong...
I've just been talking to my youngest stepson about his thoughts about wanting to join the military...this gets right into some of what I've been thinking and feeling...
You guys have turned out something that is really greater than the sum of its parts...
Of course, people are going to be all over the vocals, lyrics and melody, and Steve's ability to phrase Bowie-like and Reed-like without sounding like he's just doing tricks... and people are of course going to be loving the drums, which have some rhythmic component that only someone who can juggle an odd number of balls can count...And I agree with all that... AND I think that that Drew is one of MacJams' secret weapons, and should be shamelessly used by way more MacJammers... A bass player who can do 'busy' or 'laid back', as called for, and who is always the glue in whatever groove he is brought to...
Totally great, guys...

Glue! &mdash 09/04/07 - 05:00:34 AM
Thanks Ed - I've had a lot of good comments, 'cause I suppose the vocal is what people listen to in a pop song, and Dave has had loads of kudos for the drums and the mixing, but you're spot on about Drew the glue - he pulled this all together ... in fact, it was Drew that asked me to get involved. And, there is no guitar on this, other than Drew's bass, which I find astonishing.
In fact, i'm now pleading with him to do some bass for an odd little track I'm doing ... I think this song should ensure that his dance card is pretty full !

Secret Weapon &mdash 09/05/07 - 05:08:59 PM
It's amazing to me the range of tracks that Drew can pull off... listen to his bass on Forbidden Zone for a totally different corner of his gamut. Almost everything that's not singing or drums in this song is him, which is pretty amazing. So yeah, you're sure right about Drew being a secret weapon.
And echoroom's singing was a revelation to me; I mean, he just plain rocks, and it's not easy finding such a quality rock singer. I hope to work with both those guys again.
I'm glad this also works in parallel with discussing the military with your stepson. Thanks for listening, Ed!

What the hizz-ell happened to my comment? I swear I commented days ago, but it's not here, or at least I don't see it.
Hey! Steve said the effenheimer. For a site with a bunch of bad-boy musicians on it, it's really surprising that doesn't happen more often.
I really dig the sounds Drew gets out of that picolo bass and I think my favorite part of your contribution, Dave, is the piano, especially the way you chose to effect it. Very cool. Of course, without question, the production is stellar.
Steve, lyrics make me sick with jealousy, as per usual. If I had ever thought of giving anyone my bionic love, I think I could retire. That's awesome! [ Reply to This ]

Anyway, thank you, I'm glad you like the way this one was produced. I didn't add any piano--I think you're referring to yet another awesome contribution by Drew, the piccolo bass leads (right after "you can't smoke a cigarette" for example). I really only added percussion and a bit o' flute and strings.
