Description:
Other tracks from this BBC session appear to have been well received so here is another.
Great fun playing and recording a grand piano and timpany drums.
Lyrics:
Honey listen in.
V 1
Bright city lights are falling down
on a city street that is not for me
I long for something better, better than I have
at this moment of my life to be.
Give me something better, better baby
My heart is not what it seems to be
CH 1
Give me a working life
Give me a working life
Give me a working life....
That brings a grown man down
Listen to me
V 2
A high rise in a city street where we used to meet
An old man lying on wet park seat
I long for anything better, better than I have
before me as far as my eye can see
Give me something better, better baby
A one way ticket on a one way train.
CH 2
Give me a working life
Give me a working life
Give me a working life....
That brings a grown man down down down down
Oh my god what a town
Give me something better, better
My heart is not gonna see me through but give it back to you
CH 3
Give me a working life
Give me a working life
Give me a working life....
That brings a grown man down
That brings a grown man down
A working life

I woke up this morning with this in my head.
I then spent a couple of hours remastering it to a standard that I was reasonably happy with - not 100% but close enough for rock and roll. Song is bit on the *cheesey* side but I like a slice of cheese from time to time ;-)
Memorable moments from the studio
a) recording our producer singing (b vox) for the 1st time
b) mic-ing up a grand piano 1st time
c) using and mic-ing up 2 timpany drums 1st time
Glad u like

BBc session &mdash 09/02/07 - 01:49:08 AM
Man, we once got one with radio Leeds ... i dont even have a copy anymore! The singers voice on this is wonderful... like a smoother Marti Pellow. This mix sounds great, Graham ... i still can't figure why you guys didnt get in Smash Hits! Great chorus, a really powerful track.

Funny how... &mdash 09/02/07 - 05:23:58 AM
...at the time this was probably the anithesis of everything I believed in (you've heard the DBM session, so you'll know what I mean) but years later you can just listen to it with more open ears. It's a great soulful voice and a typical BBC mix (e.g professional, clean, radio-reasy).
Like Steve said, it's Smash Hits ready - but it's a fine line between ten weeks at number one and complete obscurity.
Thanks for uploading - a fine retro listen:-))

BBC & Smash Hits &mdash 09/02/07 - 07:27:08 AM
Oh, Smash Hits. Yep, used to buy it every week during my *big hair* days. At that time of course, you would have to have sold *a million* to even be considered and only the lucky ones got a mention.
I don't know how much it would have cost at that time to get access to similar recording facilities at a commercial studio. Probably a few hundred squid @ hour.
Our bass player (BBC employee) at that time did basic tape editing (sport I think) andsome engineering work. How he managed to learn the ropes of the desk and racks so well was beyond all of us.
With hindsight, we took this for granted I suppose.
Sadly, shortly after this session was completed, our vocalist left us which was a total bummer. I took over lead vocals until we found a replacement then he left us.....
As Phil says, fine line between major success and complete obscurity.
Changed days now thanks to the web.
I've agreed to be interviewed shortly about *Open Source* issues and obviously will mention MJ's. Thanks to CC, the audio interview will be posted on the web and will be freely available to anyone interested.
Best,
Graham

Waited 20 mins &mdash 09/02/07 - 08:13:22 AM
for quicktime to load this and it was worth the wait (don't want to wait that long again though LOL). Why aren't songs like this with this sound still at the top? Because someone at the 'top' decides that sounds must be different (they all sound alike these days and I do know things have to move on). There's room for all at the top and this is so listenable that there must be a market for it. Who wouldn't like it? Great song and beautiful vocal and performance, M [ Reply to This ]

20 mins? Ouch. Thanks for being patient. It should load after a few secs.
Historically as in the Science Technology and Medical etc. fields, Music was controlled by the big publishers. Things are changing dramatically at present. I don't want to digress too much though.
Long live MacJam's.

Excellent job remastering. Were you part of a studio band or part of Steve's band that played this song prior to this? Did you tour? (By the way, does the BBC own any rights to this recording - or any of the others?) Wonderfully tight performance. [ Reply to This ]

The analog copies that I have of this track sounded under a blanket (again). (No doubt the DAT copies will be much better). Digital restoration, archiving and back up copies are all important issues for such analog recordings. I'm sure the quality must fade over time with regards to household audio tapes.
Steve was part of the band Catch. Catch existed before, during and after Steve. I was the only member who played in every line up.
We rehersed in various rehersal studios before renting a room that we turned into our own studio.
Catch (and the follow up bands they morphed into)didn't tour but did play a large number of venues in Scotland until 2001.
The BBC recordings were done on a free gratis basis. I am unsure on the *rights* question.
