Description:
A complete remake of the very first song I uploaded here. This one is a tribute to the legendary Italian cyclist Marco Pantani.

Hope you enjoy it and thanks for listening.

Lyrics:
Marco, watching the ground underneath his wheels
Will you be lucky
Will you be sleeping any better

Marco, watched by the crowd on a tv-screen
They hear you breathing
They hear you screaming
Are you screaming

Marco, just a few miles away from victory
Now close your eyes and see

Were you well enough prepared
Did you take a lot of drugs
Were you frequently abused
Or was God just on your side

What’s the rate of your IQ
Did you ever have a girl
Who confessed in front of you
That she’s happy

Marco, fighting a hill like he climbs on wings
Praised for your power
While I know you’re fragile like a flower

Marco, don’t look behind ‘cause you’re on your own
Now close your heart and feel

How it was to be a boy
Did you have a lot of friends
Was your father any proud
Or was kindness not allowed

Were you scared to sleep in dark
Did you never face the truth
Who said you’d become a king
Of those stupids

Was it worth the blood and pain
Did you pay the highest price
To get all your dreams fulfilled
To get purely satisfied

Will you celebrate your life
Will you make yourself a son
Who’ll confess in front of you
That he’s happy

It's an art film, baby &mdash 09/01/07 - 02:32:02 PM
Walter, your music is always such an experience. The combination of your somewhat confidential sounding vocals and the cloak and dagger, plot twisting piano gives this a smoky film noir atmosphere. Who'd know it's about a cyclist? Great stuff as always, man.

I thought &mdash 09/01/07 - 06:50:02 PM
at first that this was a strange subject for a song, but as I listened I got the feeling of thoughts going through a cyclists head at only a half or less than the speed he's travelling. And your personal sounding (excellent)vocal gives it a Continental feel. Love it, regards M

Well, I'm not a big sports fan myself, but I like the poetry that's inside any top performance. Cycling is a very lonely sports in my opinion, and that's more or less what I wanted to express musically as well. Thanks for stopping by, Maurice. I'm very happy with your comment.

My thoughts &mdash 09/02/07 - 04:42:21 AM
Music is a window to the soul. As i am gravitatet to your music ,i must be gravitatet to your soul. The new version of Marco is great. Its good that you took time to rework this fragile song with the experiences that you could make musically in the last year.
The saxophonepart is well done. The instrumentation is nice and has your very own handwriting.
Lyrics are deep and touching, like always.
I like most this part
"Will you celebrate your life
Will you make yourself a son
Who%u2019ll confess in front of you
That he%u2019s happy"

All the best, Tan

The chord progression made my spine shiver. Very clear and thoughtfull production. Grand effort. Your voice is like honey. Love the sax. Since we share the the same name and I honestly identify myself with the lyrics, this song is special to me. Sniff. Rust zacht

I always love your piano atmospherics Walter! Nice percussive touches too and I like the way the vocals are so upfront in the mix ... it's like you're singing straight into the listener's ear. Your sax playing is so deeply expressive too. Very fine.

Great re-work Walter &mdash 09/02/07 - 04:37:08 PM
Really shows up your incredible curve of progression musically in the past year or so. Piano, bass, percs and sax all beautifully understated, and then there's your magic voice. Production is as good as you've done.
I watched (obsessively) this year's Tour de France, and this fits in with the pictures of the event that remain in my head. Lots of my late night questions are in the lyrics.
Top shelf Walt!!

A rework of a song is always tricky. People are mostly used to the original version, and they will rarely prefer the new version... But I felt I had to risk my chance with 'Marco', it's well 'hidden' on the bottom of my song list, so few chance that many people would already be familiar with it:-)
Thanks for your uplifting comment again, Neil. And you surely know that if I've made any progress, it's for a great part due to friends like you who always supported me with very valuable advice:-)

A Unique Stamp &mdash 09/02/07 - 07:27:07 PM
You, my friend, have a gift most aspiring songwriters and musicians would kill for --- a style and presentation that seems to be a musical extension of yourself.

It is a unique stamp that pervades your work in a most convincing and interesting manner. More than anything else, it is this elusive quality that distinguishes your work.

This particularly moody tune, set against its rather offbeat subject matter could NOT be made to work by just anyone. And yet you pulled it off... quite nicely.

Kudos to you. ;)

As always there is your vocal style and timber. But the music bed is just as strong as a signature that makes you you. Nicely arranged, and the sax solo superb!

Even more so than you usually do.... &mdash 09/03/07 - 01:48:27 PM
Here you've constructed a song that fits very well with your vocal approach...

A very 'brave' slow tempo... That triangle against the simple but full piano is a perfect accompaniment... Very strong lyrically...

And then suddenly the sax player steps forward...

Beautifully done...

Thanks for the uplifting comment. That 'brave' slow tempo has become a bit a benchmark I'm afraid :-) I'm working to have my second CD ready by spring next year, and I'd like to put some more upbeat tracks on it as well this time. Hmmm... that's exactly the hard part:-(

wow &mdash 09/06/07 - 11:04:28 AM
I remember hearing this before...but THIS is great. I like how the percussion could easily be the rate of his cycling, because it is a faster pace than your singing. And the combination of these two speeds are the heart of the song. His high-achieving, quick-paced life counter to the thoughts, memories, and emotions that are within.

But when the saxophone comes in, I just about drop to the floor. Amazing retake of this song.

'wow' back for your lovely analysis:-) Thanks so much for that... There is however a little nuance hidden at the very end of the song. Marco's last breath, symbolised by the 'air without sound' which i blow through te sax;-)

This is terrific &mdash 09/08/07 - 07:29:57 AM
Not only is the tune sweet to hear, through your well crafted words and inspirational music you prompted me to go online to understand more about him. That is powerful when I song can have you do that!

I read that there was two triangles on his neck as if someone had pressed on his juggler vein. His mother thought that he was murdered. Loved the words "did you pay the highest price" like a martyr would pay from a jealous or envious person. His famous pirate (bandana) hat was never found were he died, I think that was mentioned in the article I read of him.

Interesting indeed.

Thanks moorlandt for getting me off my duff and reading up on this fabulous personality!

Way to go!

Pantani might not have been the absolute greatest cyclist of all times, but I guess no other colleague can beat him on the 'passion & pathos' he reflected. That's what attracted me in him.
