Description:
The Mimus saturninus, (pictured above) otherwise known as the Chalk-browned Mockingbird. is a native of brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argintina and Suriname. It has nothing whatsoever to do with this song as far as I know. The lyrics mention nothing about mockingbirds.
Last week, I realized I was about the only MacJammer who hadn't done a remix of The Orbiting's Saturnine, so I contacted Lisa and got her to send me the files so I could see what I could come up with. This is the result.
I don't know, technically, if you'd call this a remix. It's more of a re-envisionment. The only elements I used from the original are Lisa's vocals. I created an entirely new instrumental background, added backing vocals and new percussion.
I recorded my parts in Garageband and mixed it in Logic.
Go take a listen to the original Saturnine, by ledebutant and illuminati, otherwise know as The orbiting. I hope you enjoy what I've come up with.
Lyrics:
Saturnine
An empty book,
filled with photographs of you,
on the Great Wall of China,
Brooklyn, 1992.
Can't take back now what you've left behind.
We all fall,
(Endings never escape shame.)
We all fall
(Aren't you the one who never had a reason for love?)
We all fall
(and who will bear the blame?)
You're pulling faces now,
every feature in a frown.
It's our wedding day
and you said you didn't like my gown.
Can't give you now what I've left behind.
(and who's to blame?)
We all fall
we all fall
(and I'm not to blame)
Every photo fades,
the ink it drains away,
and in my empty book,
the pages start to fray.
I wonder if you know what you've missed.
We all fall...

A Trip into the Ether &mdash 09/04/07 - 10:13:51 AM
Back in the early 90s, I was a big fan of groups like Lush and Slowdive. They had such wonderfully rich and, well, lush sounds it's almost like you could just float away on them. That's what Lisa's vocals reminded me of on the original version of the tune.
Glad you enjoyed it, Rebsie. Thanks for giving it a listen. [ Reply to This ]

the word for this might be 'opulent' it sounds so rich and lavishly dreamlike. Great mental images I had listening to this to this, regards M [ Reply to This ]
I think "dreamlike"... &mdash 09/05/07 - 11:06:04 AM
... is a very good way of describing this. Not just this version of the song, but the lyrics and the way Lisa delivers them have a very dreamy quality which I really love. I'm glad you enjoyed the song. Thanks for taking the time to comment. [ Reply to This ]

Percussive &mdash 09/05/07 - 11:11:07 AM
One of the main things I did add to this remix was a full percussion line. In the original, the percussion comes in toward the end. The percussion I used was all Apple loops, the only major alterations I made to them was altering some of the settings and slicing them up a bit. The main loops are a couple of orchestral loops changed from the orchestral voice to one of the world percussion voices from JP4 (I don't remember which one right off). It makes for a pretty cool sound.
Glad you stopped by. Appreciate it. [ Reply to This ]

I love my Les Paul &mdash 09/06/07 - 11:04:40 AM
Even though it's a cheapie (relatively speaking), you just can't beat the sound of it. I've come up with settings for it that I really like, so I've been running them into the ground lately, but they work. And the low B on my Yamaha bass just gives me such a full, deep sound. They're the perfect combination. Thanks for listening, McBoy. I appreciate your comments. [ Reply to This ]
Saturnine &mdash 09/05/07 - 06:33:36 PM
this song seems to get around. I would love to say this is one of my favorites but I havnt heard all the versions. I do have the original in my Ipod. I think this one blends with Lisa's voice in a more harmoniouse way if that makes sense. the chord changes fit what she is singing! there is a more openess to this lots of room. I think you have do a wonderfull job on this! [ Reply to This ]

Very good remix .. &mdash 09/05/07 - 06:43:53 PM
.. of a really good song Joseph. You've added the JG full bed and it works very nicely. I've always loved this song, and each and every new version just underlines how good it is. Nice LP sounds - full and hearty.

I completely agree this is a "re-envisioning", and although Lisa's vocals are inspirational, YOU did a sensational job of creating a whole new feel behind this... really smooth and lush. Awesome and tasteful guitar-work, The percussion is great at first, but I did want a little break in it after a bit, let things drop out and have guitar and vox sail out on their own for a long chord, then have the drums come back in, maybe? But that's very minor... overall this is quite a stunning bit of work, sir!

Lush and powerful, I especially like the &mdash 09/13/07 - 09:44:58 PM
harmonies on the chorus. Reminds me a bit of My Bloody Valentine, what with the big wash of guitar sound. [ Reply to This ]
