I think that perfectly describes me working late into the night, composing music one eighth-note at a time! :-)
I'm very pleased to know that this evoked a magical world for you... that was the intent. The story and music evolved together, and by the time I finished the music this weekend, the story was complete and I just needed to write it down.
As for the photo, it looked a little like an eye to me too, so I cropped it, tinted it moonlight-blue, and added a dash of radial zoom-blur to the edges to give it an eerie dreamy feel.
Thank you for listening and commenting, Ian!

Can't beat magical woods ... I've spent a lot of time in magical woods over the years, both in the physical world and in my head.
I know nothing about classical music so I can't say anything intelligent about your compositional and arrangement skills except that it sounds really nice! Great melodies interweaving, and the delicate bells contrast beautifully with the deep dark cello.
I reckon if I went into a magical wood with this on my iPod I'd be straight down the well of vision and into the world of faery. Wheeeeee! [ Reply to This ]

Nope, you can't beat magical woods, they beat right back, with a vengeance! Of the people with a head for things ethereal and misty, I'm very happy to know this met with your approval. I'm not sure how this happened, but it sort of took over and began to write itself over the past few weeks, bending itself into what you hear here, and the story unfolded as well. Now if only I could find out what those little flecks of gold powder are on my pillow every morning...

Feter, thank you again for your early thoughts and encouragement. The round in the middle was a lot of fun to create, but also quite complicated to make it fit together, flow and build, and not get really boring. It started out really boring, and at one point I almost gave up and took it out. It is amazing what a few changed notes, a swelling cello, and a sprinkle of fairy dust will do! Hansel und Gretel? Haven't seen the opera (yet), only heard snippets of the music... but read the Grimm's fairy tale to my kids. I've always loved Tchaikovsky's ability to whip out great tunes (even though he HATED the Nutcracker, he thought it was the worst thing he ever wrote), and so I'm terribly flattered to have you make a reference there. Every time I embark on one of these projects, I learn so much about writing music... mostly I learn that there's sooo much more to learn. But I'm having fun, and if you're enjoying my work along the way, then I will let out a silly "YIPPEEEE" and try to regain my composer, uh, composure. Thank you for listening and commenting, Neil!

Fireflies &mdash 09/04/07 - 10:37:01 AM
I don't know if they have fireflies in the Black Forest (if they did, maybe it wouldn't be so black), but this reminds me of watching fireflies dancing around in the dusk. An excellent work. I hear what you're saying about it kind of straining against the 4/4 time, but that gives it such an interesting feel. It gives an energy to the melody. Almost as if it just wants to break loose and dance across the meadow.
A wonderful, wonderful piece of work, dragon man! [ Reply to This ]
sorry no fireflies there &mdash 09/05/07 - 06:36:41 PM
And no brasses in this piece (I want to write for french horns in my NEXT piece though!) Initially there was even more straining against 4/4 (you can still hear the really lopsided feel in my prior Dancylvania version of this)... but it got too weird after a short time with the strings and cello, so I re-aligned them a bit to make it less awkward. But I still left some parts of the dance sounding a little more chaotic and wild (in a very structured way :-) Glad you liked the result! Off to check on your latest too!

i LOVE the idea of the dark forest and all the fairies and forest creatures coming to the middle of woods to a little lea flooded in a moonlight, to have their midnight fairy dance. the effect is SO enchanting and fairy-taleish. with this magic story behind it is so wonderful to listen, to be taken away with that subtility, delicacy and tenderness of the music because it captures the image so wonderfully and so magically. you know already all my opinions, but i have to say again the flute is simply STUNNING and the bells... they do the magic... wonderful. i love the cello, what a great contrast with gentle bells. the calmer mid part fits to the story very well, because it is just exactly the moment, when in the middle of dance every dancer needs a little break, just to rest a little, just to catch a breath and then back to the swirl of dance again! i love that little jewish triplet, thats my weakness, i've told you already :) all in total it is truly a magical and wonderful piece of music edo. i love it. splendid. Thank you for taking time to listen to early drafts as I worked on getting everything just right. I think it was you who said "more bells!" so I sprinkled more in there. The forest is a mysterious place, exciting and dangerous. And this dance, heavy on the woodwinds, just kept telling me this story. I see the middle section as a time when everyone takes a rest EXCEPT the two main dancers, who do their own spotlight dance for a bit.
Anyway, I appreciate you critiquing and listening again, now that this is finished. And I definitely look forward to something new from you, Paja... it's about time, don't you think? :-)

Hmm... I don't know of anybody who would want to "live" in an air conditioned studio day and night. Inspiration for me comes from getting outside, meeting real people, driving and hiking through forests and deserts... we actually got pretty close to the "Real" Black Forest when we were in Bavaria... what's left of it. You are traveling many places, try to learn about the people and area you are in while you are there. It will give you inspiration later. For now, draw inspiration from places you have been and people you have met. There are a lot of stories there. But sometimes the stories won't show themselves to you unless you break out of your routine. Go on a little adventure, do something different while you're in Texas. Shake up those thoughts! :-)

I like that we hear the growl of the bowed upright bass, but I'm wondering if you could add in a plucked bass line. You really embrace the 'standards' of the ethnic genres. It's a flair that's uniquely Drakonis. :-) [ Reply to This ]

How nice to have you sway in to listen! Funny you should mention the pizzicato bass... I was actually having trouble early on with the bass line being too monotonous, and thought of different ways to break it up, and adding a plucked section was an idea I almost went with. Instead I altered the bass pattern in spots, and then forgot about that idea... thank you for reminding me of it again! I may try that, either on this piece later, or on my next piece. Hi Charles, thank you for listening and commenting. The "droning cellos" gave me a lot of trouble, I kept rewriting the bassline in areas to keep it from getting too monotonous... Thank you for visiting me, sorry for being so disconnected lately, I miss our side-splitting wordplay silliness.

just what a dragon likes to hear :-) And deep lingering music is what I think of when I think of you too, so I take that compliment very seriously, thank you for listening and enjoying it! I like music that crawls into your brain and stays awhile. That's one of my measures of a successful piece of music.

And you hit it on the head... "won't WANT to return"... but those left behind don't know that :-) I would expect somebody who LIVES in the forest to know these things though. Thank you so much for skipping barefoot over to listen to the music, always a jo-y to see you!

Which one are you going to? So glad to be conjuring up dancing fancies in your head with this, that's the whole idea! And what an honor to ride to Faire with you, thanks! Hope your passengers don't mind the "music you can't find on the radio".

glamourous gloom &mdash 09/09/07 - 09:54:02 AM
love the main theme and how it is naturally varied and developed throughout different sections.. bits of impressions i got: slavic melancholy, folkly rhythm, medieval grandeur, russian shine, french gracefulness
thanks for sharing and having produced such pleasant work!

Wonderful impressions &mdash 09/11/07 - 07:42:41 AM
Thank you for listening, H'un, and offering some of the impressions this was hinting at, that's actually very helpful and insightful to me! I think there *is* a bit of Russian and Slavic influence in my music. And of course, I'm happy it is something you enjoyed. I'll keep learning and practicing.

Marvelous! MJ's very own Stravinsky let loose in the woods. But more melodic:)
Very pleasant experience. Fantastic orchestration. I like!

A new face! &mdash 09/11/07 - 08:02:34 AM
Welcome to Macjams... I shall hop over and return the favor and learn about your music now too! Stravinski is one of my heroes, he is on the edge of the modern stuff I can tolerate... he could push the weird melodies and rhythms, and get away with it. I have a long way to go before I can get there, but I'm very happy to know that you enjoyed this unusual piece. I learned a great deal putting this together. One of those stretch-n-grow goals.
