Description:
A song for my son Gray who just got a job in NYC after graduating college. This features a mandolin solo; I just got mandolin this summer and have been enjoying playing it a lot. I figured I'd post it here to see what people think. It may be not quite done, but I think it's at a good point to get some input.

Lyrics:
There You Go

From the fruit comes a seed
Then the sprout becomes a tree
It looks so easily done
Just sitting there in the sun
Hours turn into days
And the weeks pass by in a haze
And how will it all turn out
When it is born of all this doubt
But there you go...

Through the door around the bend
Will the dream never end?
It’s never been all that clear
But still you hold it dear
While the morning light is harsh
It’s not very easily parsed
Where the dream will lead
Still you’re getting all you need
And there you go…

Sonny boy, you’re my bud
But buddy boy I’ve never given you enough
But I’ve given you all I could
I guess you turned out pretty good
You turned out pretty good
Even though.
And there you go

Hardware:
the usual stuff mostly, but the AKG Perception 200 mic and Johnson F-style mandolin are new.

Software:
GB4

Congratulations to Gray, both on the job and on graduation. I hope he's still going to stick with music. He's one talented guy (like his dad).

I LOVE THIS SONG. It's so bittersweet, but you do capture that you love him and that you're happy for him, though you're sad to see him go. That line "I've never give you enough, but I've give you all I could," makes me well up.

I love the vocal, the accordion, the production, the mandolin solo (more than two notes, what would Neil think?) I think this is one of your best songs ever. So there.

Good luck, Gray!

What would Neil Young think? &mdash 09/06/07 - 06:46:46 PM
Well, I just got sort of sentimental about this chord progression and wanted to play through an entire verse because it's very tuneful. And the mandolin is sort of well set up for soloing through a slightly jazzy progression like this, so I guess Mr. Young will have to wait for another song for the 2-note solo.

Thanks for your kind words. What parent doesn't think that they could have done more for their kid? It's really pretty commonplace, I think. I'm not really that sad to see Gray go, as he's been gone for a while, in a way, but I am glad he got a job doing what he wanted to do, and it's funny how things work out.

that was all I had when I started working on this song. I literally didn't have a clue where I was going with this but I just wanted to make a nice sounding sort of song. I guess I came close! :)

You make such well crafted tracks. It doesn't seem to depend on the style or genre you choose to pursue its always excellent. The playing on this is a delight. You're vocal is spot on and fits the track like a glove. Mandolin gives it an extra warm feel.

thanks! &mdash 09/06/07 - 07:09:45 PM
I try!
Actually I have been struggling a bit with this mix, because I recorded it in 24 bit since you can in GB'08, and the levels are running hotter and I'm not used to the 24 bit recording. I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference, but that's the only think I can think it could be. But that said, I think this is okay, just a bit too hot for my tastes and I probably will go back into this and remix it. I'd also thought I might record an electric guitar part, but I wasn't sure how it would fit in and I didn't want to make this too crowded.

seems to be ideally set up for graceful soloing. I still lack some skills in the mando area, but I can get my ideas across okay, I guess...
Thanks so much for the comment!

I was listening to Chandler Travis' song, "This is Home" off his "Let's Have a Pancake" CD and somehow that inspired this song. That's why I came up with a title with the same number of syllables. Then the song took a different direction, and now when I go back to listen to "This is Home", it sounds totally different. I guess the thing that is similar is the sort of twists in the chord changes, sort of classic in a way. Anyway for more Chandler you can go here: http://www.sonictrout.com/bands/

He's one of my favs!

Thanks for your comment!

I'm pretty pleased with the sound of the mandolin. It was a very good buy that worked out well. Now I just need to get a bit more advanced in my command of it, but it does the trick for what I want it to do. I have a ocuple more mandolin songs in the works.

Terriffic job! &mdash 09/06/07 - 04:53:39 PM
Your usual superb job Jim but even more so this time. The lyrics and singing are as good as the instrument part. Just a well written, arranged and sung song. Thanks for all of your posting.

.. look forward to a new JB tune. Absolutely lovely sound you've got here Jim, so rich and natural - feels like we're in the same room. Enjoying the words and your wonderfully laid back groove - back/front porch material (take your pick). I'm hoping to get a mandolin next year (smaller to travel with), whe we'll be doing an extended trip to Europe and maybe Canada, so I listened with interest to how it worked - it worked fine!
Thanks Jim, hope Gray does well.
Cheers,
Neil

a great song: chord progression is amazing, great warm vocals, loving bittersweet lyrics, the mandolin and marimba bits and the understated drums. there is nothing about it that seems like it could be done better or that is out of place. great stuff.

every parent will concur with the sentiment in this lovely 'easy' song. I loved the emotion you put into this, especially with the Mandolin. It sounds great (the 'feeling' there is so tangible). Good luck to your son too in his new venture, regards M

Damn fine song and... &mdash 09/06/07 - 07:46:23 PM
...equally damn fine mando playing to boot! Actually I don't think I've heard the mando played so smoothly and expressively.

KK

PS - I'll be posting something with a bit of mandolin as well soon...

Top quality production. Lovely solo. Nice lilting feel to the whole thing.

Definitely has a Harvest Moon feel to it. I can see the bloke sweeping the floor as this is playing away.

Enjoyed a lot,
Thanks,
Phil

You did a great job with the vocal harmonies .
Very nice song, showing you're happy and maybe a little sad at the same time .

My Song for this season &mdash 09/07/07 - 06:29:33 PM
Well Jim... this one nailed me right betwen the eyes... or center of the heart more accurately... Here's one I wish I wrote... my oldest son just started college... I was so wrapped up in the song that I didn't notice any of the stuff that I usually comment on... but maybe that's all you need to about this one from me... I think that's what a song should do... transend the stuff that we can analyze...

A few people above said "bitter sweet" such is life and this song. The music fits the theme and lyric very well. Sensitive and intricate production. Very pleasing. Regards

Another dad... &mdash 09/09/07 - 05:27:31 PM
...who calls his son 'sprout' and 'bud'... I'll just put this song away for future use...in about a decade...

This sounds great, Jim. Your singing is great...Maybe there's a spot or two where it sounds like you're still wrapping your mind around how you want to phrase it, maybe, but the quality in your voice is just warm and relaxed throughout...

Love the mandolin... Gee, I was thinking of putting a Johnson steel guitar on my next wishlist...They seem to be a good company for those 'extra' instruments and extra sonic colors...at a good price...

I'm gonna have to get my wife in here to listen to this one. I think she's going to like it a lot...

I love the way you can mix the most eclectic sounds into a folk-ish type piece. I love your style. The mandolin playing is heartfelt and skilled. Congratulations to you and your son.

Very nice heartfelt song. Nice to see such love flowing from a father and son especially when people sometimes have difficulty expressing their true feelings. I think you did an swesome job doing that here. You go Dad!!!
