Description:
I have never been a hunter, but I had a meal once in a diner in Titusville, PA during deer season. I was struck by the fathers and sons and the bonding that was so apparent. I hope that this song encourages fathers to find something special that you can do with your sons that may spark a memory like this one.

Lyrics:
A few inches of fresh snow
Sparrow with a winter song
I was just a young boy
But not for very long.

Nock the arrow quietly
Rustle in the brush ahead
My Dad smiling next to me
He told me to be strong.

An eight point buck staring back at me
Maybe today you’ll get your first stag
Still see his face as we hunted our prey
But mine was already in the bag.

Parking lot full of trucks
I had the special of the day
Burly men with tall tales
Of the one that got away.

My Dad had them in his hands
They could see me draw the bow
Must have been a gust of wind
As the arrow went astray.

Chorus

Two hours on the interstate
He helped me with the seat belt
Wipers put me in a trance
And the snow began to melt

His hand upon my shoulder
Carried me into a dream
To this day, the warmest thing
That I have ever felt.

I like the laid-back feel of this song a lot. I know it is more difficult to make music like these than it seems. Good guitar play, GOOD lyrics and a very fitting voice. You actually made me delve a bit more in this genre, i dunno whether it is folk though. But that is my inexperience with the genre. Liked it a lot!

Sparked a memory &mdash 09/13/07 - 03:19:50 PM
This actually did bring up the memories of my dad teaching me to hunt when I was young. He was a hunter not because he thought of it as "sport" but because it's what he had to do to survive during the Depression. And, I think he was very honestly proud of the fact that I couldn't actually bring myself to shoot another living creature.

Beautiful song. A lot of emotion behind it and wonderfully performed. I really enjoyed it.

I was &mdash 09/15/07 - 03:41:23 PM
born in Hibbing Minnesota and my father hunted for food . He isnt a hunter for sport and never will be . I was raised on rabbit , deer , grouse , bass , trout , walleye and just about anything else him and his buddies could catch . One of my first conscience memories of feeling emotion and being pulled out of the zen moment of being 3-4 years old was my dad taking him hunting with him ...it was winter and there was a fresh coat of fluffy snow on the ground ....my dad took his over under 20/22 with him for small game hunting it was always slung over his arm broken in the middle as to not accedentaly fire the gun if he fell......we were walking toward a tree stump and my dad stopped and clicked his gun into position and shot at a rabbit that he just clipped his front leg I can remember the rabbit screaming like a person and feeling very mad at my dad but then he ran up the rabbit gabbed it by its hind leggs and bashed its head into the tree stump and then ripped his head off there was only my fathers bright orange hunting vest , and bright red blood splattered all over the fresh snow.....we ate rabbit that night and I finally knew where it came from . Ill never forget that memory as long as i live and I seldom eat meat because of it . The flesh and lives of other living things is a gift and should not be look at as an industry . Im not preaching at all I still eat meat and enjoy it from time to time . But the feeling Im trying to get across that I belive you were too with this awesome song is the circle of life is the meaning of life itself . Thanx for posting and sharing this song And thank for sparking a memory in my mind .....True Art!

Found my way here because of your name - glad I did!

This is a lovely acoustic number, well played and sung. There are some great lines in the lyric. Well thought out, evocative and emotional. Some of the best lyrics I've seen on MJ's for a while -

Great stuff, will check out more from you -

but I can appreciate a good song. Lived in Millersburg and Selinsgrove for a while - brought back memories.
