Hello ! &mdash 09/16/07 - 08:16:02 AM
Ian this is a very fine version of this melody, the tabla sounds very well with the guitar.. i'm enjoying the guitar sound so much ! Just want to ask .. there's a sound in the background (not noisy) but it's strange, i've heard it in many of your post and in this one really fits so what is it ??????

Hello Yeman,... &mdash 09/16/07 - 08:30:10 AM
Thanks, I am glad you like this version of the melody, and that you think the tabla goes well with the guitar!!! The sound in the background is Indian drone instrument, called tanpura, it accompanies all North Indian classical music. Here is a link to a picture of one:

It also makes the sound of the universe, sometimes spelled ohm, or aum, which is chanted during meditation. The tanpura has no frets, just four strings played open. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Ian, really i was going to say that it sounds like something in the universe (planets or earth) sounds like that and you've got the right word ! New info to add to my mind

my pleasure to talk about this interesting instrument. The tabla has such an accurate pitch for tone, because ink is rubbed into its center, to precisely the right amount, to make it ring like a bell. The tanpura generates the sound of the universe, and it has two bridges, so the strings alternate between the two as their vibration carries them from one to the other, creating a waver in pitch, of which there are four, the two tonics, an octave, and a fifth.

Much appreciated,... &mdash 09/16/07 - 03:34:57 PM
Indeed a taqsim, but with tabla instead of durbeka, and added tanpura, and the traditional backup melody on guitar instead of oud. Yes indeed feter, the east is full of mystery, one can only guess how ancient writings like yuga cycles (phases of history) are timed with the journey of earth and sun around the galaxy, a voyage that takes longer to complete than is old humanity.
