Very nice piece, Dr.; solidly played, and the recording is ace: the bottom end sounds rich even on my laptop speakers.
When did you record this?

Overall I enjoyed the piece... &mdash 09/17/07 - 05:38:01 AM
Overall I enjoyed the piece as far as technique and playing were concerned.
The side where I wasn't so sure was the tune itself. It reminded me of a couple of old pieces of music (at least), 'It's Magic' and another piece that the title escapes me. It's too near these classic evergreens for me to appreciate this as a new composition, rather a medley with your improvisation filling in.
I've played too many old, evergreen tunes too many times to miss the phrasing, etc.. of these pieces.

thx for commenting &mdash 09/17/07 - 07:50:39 AM
I appreciate your taking the time. First of all, I don't even know what "It's Magic" is - and I know for sure that I did not plagiarize any tunes when I wrote this. The issue may be that it is a retro-stylized piece (30s, 40s Tin Pan Alley -- the age of the standards), which hearkens back to that era of "evergreens", as you so speak. The issue we have with tonal music in general, is that there are only so many combinations of harmonies which can be explored. The chordal structure is a bit Debussy, the harmonies a little "Gerswhin" - the sensibility is "New Age" in the Winston or Brickman sense - but the way in which I put it together is solidly my own. So thank you for not dogging my piece with a bad score- and for taking the time to write your thoughts to me. :) Peace

Aha! &mdash 09/17/07 - 10:56:23 AM
I was wondering what make grand you had in your picture, there. What a fantastic sound!
Besides the fact that it's a great piece, Dr. Shaman, I also really like the fact that the composition and your interpretation allows the beauty and strength of summer to remain in the spirit of the music.
Really cool...I love it.

i have so much respect for your talent and your support means a lot to me - i am so glad you were able to pick up on the "summer" in the "fall" - for there are always elements of dark and light in everything... thank you

My two cents... &mdash 09/17/07 - 08:26:45 PM
I enjoyed the soundscape and did not so much hear "evergreen" moments as I did an honest painting of your autumn picture. Who can argue with imagination? ... I personally found the sustain to cloud up your otherwise precise playing, but that, too, is more a matter of taste and very individual. The Bosendorfer is a sweet piano and it is nice to hear an acoustic one...I do have a thought about something you wrote: "The issue we have with tonal music in general, is that there are only so many combinations of harmonies which can be explored." First, I don't hear anything atonal with this composition. Second, once I think I know all the "combinations of harmonies," I fall into some new ones and am once again amazed.
I enjoyed hearing your beautiful piano music.
Peace.

thank you for your affirmation of individuality in my piece - much appreciated - and i love the bosendorfer also (obviously) - Who can argue with imagination? Indeed, no one - and nothing is impossible.

Well done, you have really captured an image of autumn really well. You are really skilled onthe piano and your talent for expression is impressive. I like the meandering joy in the track, as if you are walking in a park on a sunny autumn day and kicking up the leaves. This track has got an almost cinematic film scoring quality to it. Very nice. Hey Dr.
I moved form the east coast 2 years ago, and I miss Fall somethin' aweful. This brought back the swooning feeling I got trompin through the orange and reds in Woodstock. Thanks you. Oh, also very well recorded....Oh, also, like your new icon! [ Reply to This ]

what is the sound of Autumn? &mdash 09/23/07 - 07:32:51 PM
Not sure, but somehow you did seem to capture an auburn crisp shadow in the music, rich wisps of whirling leaves on the sidewalk... intriguing! I like it, sort of jazzy, snippets of tunes blowing by, but mostly just a collage of oranges and browns boldy blowing through. Magnificent playing, smooth composition, and a nice satisfying ending. And with a great recording too... pianos are notoriously tough to mic, this sounded rich and full (the fact that it was a Bosendorfer doesn't hurt either, sheesh, you lucky guy!)
