Description:
My first Garage Band attempt; this song is about a female friend's high maintenance, neurotic, prozac-popping dog that freaks out in electrical storms. He answers to "Safetydog".
Actual guitars, voices, and shakers were used; bass and drums were created by MIDI; one Apple loop was used in LoFi. I sing (I don't sing) near the end but it is digitally enhanced to sound like a female voice. Thanks for listening!

Lyrics:
Oh Safetydog....

Hardware:
KEL HM-1 matched stereo pair on acoustic guitar and shaker, Shure KSM44 on vox.

Hey, thanks for listening all the way through. It builds up but I admit it needs to be cut down in length. Thanks Len!

Superb GB start!

Whoa &mdash 09/21/07 - 11:20:24 AM
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment... I have now been grossly overpaid for what I did, and yet I had a lot of fun doing it. The tracks I have heard at this site in the last few days are so inspirational that I think my head is about to explode!

first attempt? &mdash 09/22/07 - 12:22:32 AM
You have a real knack for this my friend if this is your first attempt. The fidelity of your acoustic guitar recording is excellent, and that is not an easy thing to do, let me tell, you. Just the right amount of compression. Plus, the sheep was genius. Tight mix, cool transitions. Well done.

Sheep &mdash 09/22/07 - 10:47:54 AM
Thanks Racerat. That sheep wandered into the room by accident but seemed to fit so I left it. Funny about the guitar... I just laid that down in a hurry (someone was waiting for me in the driveway). This was just so I could remember the idea. I used a $159 Art & Lutherie parlor. When I came back to it later, I listened, and there it is. Who needs Martins...

very good &mdash 09/22/07 - 01:28:54 PM
just the fact that your drums and instruments are all live sets this apart. The guitar is so clear. enjoyed this alot glad I listened.

Well... &mdash 09/22/07 - 02:05:38 PM
I can't take total credit as the drum kit and the thumping that occurs later is a Garage Band kit. I did "play" it but it was made on the keyboard. I paid a lot of attention to the hihat... every second hit is a lower velocity... which is how I'd actually play it if I had used real drums. The shaker is real, though. It took several takes to get it just right. I was looking for a nice high pitched shaker and found it in the form a little "skull" which was maybe all of a buck-fiddy.
Thanks for your comments!

Hey now! &mdash 09/22/07 - 03:04:00 PM
This is pretty good for your first GB and it was definitely more than an attempt. I started out here the same way man. Very nice ice breaker! I detected much feeling in this and enjoyed the listen much. Welcome MJ's my friend.

Very nice &mdash 09/22/07 - 05:20:42 PM
first GB and Posting, but very nice 'period'. Love the 'deep' feel of these lovely rich sounds and so inventive too. I like long songs when they're interesting... as yours is( but must confess I've overdone a couple myself LOL). The build up is great on this ,regards M

Love the evolution of the layering and the breaks with the thunder. Clean mix. Hard to get this one out of my head after listening - which is a good thing. Thanks!

Great first track &mdash 09/23/07 - 11:10:47 AM
A good fun track to start with. Nice work and good production. Lovely guitar, great bass and drums. I like as well the thunderstorm which links your subject. The strings are very soothing and the vocals all go well.
Very nice to listen to. Top marks.
P.s. Its a mad subject to write a track about, then again I wrote a track that was inspired by a snail.

My &mdash 09/24/07 - 10:52:55 AM
studio was fairly unconventional... the corner coffee shop called Mystic Java, oddly enough. I'd be punch'n the keys on the MacBook whilst bob'n my head. No one will go near me now. Thanks for the comments, Allen.

Nice tension, dark sounds, great tune. And your first in GB too? Looking forward to hearing more.

Harmony &mdash 10/10/07 - 10:42:50 AM

The chords progression is very important here . You've found one that can be played for a long time without getting boring .
Nice work on the production too .

Harmony... interesting observation... it's like the "Song that Never Ends". That phrase starts with a question, answers it, asks it again, then leaves you hanging...
I appreciate you listening to my song!

Sic em &mdash 11/15/07 - 09:49:24 AM
Original track with first class production.

It has an open and airy sound and feel to it that I envy. It seems that my pieces always end up sounding a bit pinched. good stuff.

I strive for "open and airy" so this is a very satisfying comment, Sic. There is lots of experimentation with eq, panning, reverb, echo and such. And some of the magazines like EQ and Sound on Sound show what the big guys are doing. If you are into spacialness (spelling?) and sound, these mags are absolutely fascinating.
