Ground control to Pirate Tom &mdash 09/19/07 - 06:08:23 AM
Delightfully twisted journey on the sea of space. This is strange - and I like it. Great loop wrangling - you actually got nuance and emotion out of the sterile midi tune.

the Marvin the Martian / Pirate link eludes me. it's hiding in my subconciousness somewhere. Marvin blusters like pirate, but he's such a nebbish. perhaps he's an anti-pirate?

the nuance and emotion was mostly in the MIDI tune already. part of the problem is the MIDI instruments mostly suck. just dragging the track into GarageBand perks it up like adding water to a wilted plant.

of course, i couldn't leave well enough alone and morphed it into Pachelbel's canon.

thanks

Cool &mdash 09/19/07 - 03:34:53 PM
Who is that narrator, he sounds like the Martian from Looney Tunes?

i used to be able to do an excellent Marvin the Martian. i was a bit disappointed to discover that my voice can't be abused as much anymore. but i went ahead anyway. mostly it works, but several phrases just don't sound right to me.

there are also actual, off the internet samples of Marvin in the background in the beginning and the ending. if you use headphones you can hear them rather clearly.

thanks

i like &mdash 09/19/07 - 05:57:05 PM
this very much. i could see this as the beginning to a Flaming Lips song (kept waiting for the accoustic gtr, mellotron and whining voice to come in). awesome job.

until you said it, i woudn't have pictured this:

it's all in slo mo, flames and townsfolk running through the streets...

hundreds of little Marvins with eyepatches wreaking havoc...

of course, they would be doing more harm to each other than the townsfolk!

what a nightmare.

thanks a lot B^)

Up to my armpits in... pirates? &mdash 09/20/07 - 01:28:41 PM
A full round o'booty for paraphrasing one of my favourite Loony Tunes moments... and the Illudium Pu36 Explosive Space Modulator as well!

Musically, this just works. I like Bud's "Pirate Tom" reference... this catches the sweeping granduer that any self-respecting space epic really can't resist, and then squirrels it mightily with a tiny Martian pirate.

i have no excuse for this.

perhaps i can blame the late sixties?

yeah, that's the ticket. :-)

thanks

OK &mdash 09/20/07 - 11:38:03 PM
I'm going to go out on a limb here: Marvin the Martian wrote the words, but they were performed by "Neorman Thummum" (sp?), the off-the-wall mystic whose rant was sampled to hilarious/creepy effect on godspeed you! black emperor's "lift yr. skinny fists like antennas to heaven!" Anybody with me on this one?

Anyone?

Well, this is a totally bent little track in any case; and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.

at first when i read your comment i had no idea what you were talking about.

but after a few days, "Neorman Thummum" is starting to ring a bell. a tubular bell. no, not that. some other bell. this is now going to drive me to distraction.

so, i'm kinda sorta with you on this

thanks for listening!

ah ha!

someone actually noticed what song is playing backwards in the intro!

and the morse code message!

and the voice at the end that doesn't say "I buried Paul"

i think there was something else too, but i forgot.

thanks
