Description:
This is something different from me. I wanted to try something out of my normal pigeon-hole. Although I've put it in the electropop genre (closest genre I could find) I would actually put it in an ' instrumental electro-rock' genre if one existed. I wanted to keep the piece lean and simple. Let me know what you think.
Hardware:
Quad G5 Powermac, Digi 002 Rack, Ernie Ball EVH Musicman
Software:
ProTools 7 LE, Amplitube 2, T-Racks, SSL 4000 Collection, SampleTank 2, Addictive Drums

Great &mdash 09/21/07 - 04:43:57 PM
Kind of "cute" sounds seem to get serious in short order and make me stand up and take note. Nice arrangement and sonically pleasing. [ Reply to This ]
not really &mdash 09/21/07 - 07:40:55 PM
into electro, but you do some very fine composing Pie. It definatly has your sound to it and that is a very good thing. [ Reply to This ]
nice song &mdash 09/22/07 - 12:31:52 AM
I like the mix/production you do...It reminds me of the wriggly spearmint gum commercial music, which I do like, I like most commercials music, they employ very talented musicians....I'll check ur other stuff out, but this song rocks...I'll have another piece of PIE please... [ Reply to This ]

You weren't kidding when you said this was different for you. I kept waiting for the great big wall of guitar and massive drum bit to come in along with the 87 part harmony and the bittersweet love song lyrics....but no! Denied!
I can't tell if it's because I'm used to something different from you or if it's actually true, but I feel as though the song needs something more, that it still doesn't quite add up to that magic Pieness I'm so used to. I'm not sure that, at this point, the song feels as though it goes somewhere inevitable that forces me to listen.
I also am used to having moments in your songs that I HAVE to hear again. I always listen to your songs on repeat and listen three or four times before I move on to the next one. I do like the way the song comes back in at 3:13 after the bass is featured and I love the opening, too, but I'm looking for something...argh...I don't know the word...I want to be concrete rather than abstract, because to say I'm looking for "the magic" isn't helpful, but I think you know what I mean. You're good at "the magic."
This is one hell of a mix. It's so clean you could lick it. I especially admire your restraint with the electric guitar, as you've used it more as a textural element than anything else. I like the main synth riff very much, too and the opening is just about as perfect as an opening gets. I love the way you've combined the electro-drums with the kit drum sound. I don't know if you've actually done that, but it sounds that way to me.
Also, I think your new profile photo is trying to steal my soul. [ Reply to This ]

sweet chewy powerful goodness... &mdash 09/23/07 - 08:53:03 AM
as usual with most stuff you do. Has a good strong backbone all the way through... one suggestion is right in the middle where at the end of the phrase your synth holds the last note for a looong time, it seemed almost too plain... I was expecting something to happen, like a slowly increasing warble in the tone, or for it to bend up into the stratosphere... something fancy. Other than that, great tune and rhythm.

Perhaps I just don't understand electro pop, but honestly, my talented friend... this piece (as it stands) is just so much cosmic flotsam.
A sonically pleasant and harmless bit of a concept floating aimlessly in space... waiting for direction from Ground Control.
In that respect, it reminds me of The Beatles' fluff filler, *Flying* on their Magical Mystery Tour LP.
I KNOW you are more than capable of infusing it with so much more. Please do. ;)

very cute, well composed and tight.
cute is not derogatory from me, btw :)
but me being who i am, i want to hear some more work with your sounds. that is- experiment with your soud design a little, cuz they seem to go a little flat after a while [ Reply to This ]

So I thought it was pretty good (got the vaguest whiff of "Autobahn" off it) but the bass section in the middle is way too long. The first chord change is a bit challenging for something this poppy (even though it's rock) but the geetar sounds cool and it's a fittingly "spacy" synth sound. Think you could double up the git with some synth washes without it becoming too muddy too
All you need is a video or a science fiction series to slap it in front of. Or is that why you did this...?

Very enjoyable from start to finish. Your mixes are always so crisp and perfectesque. Awesome work, Pie. [ Reply to This ]
Wrong pigeon? &mdash 10/02/07 - 11:00:55 AM
Echoing JA Stewart, this is competent diversion, like New Age pop. By placing your melody almost exclusively on the beat, you miss opportunities to creating more fun, more dance. The building of voices as the song moves along is nice. The electric guitar adds a different textured, altho it lacks personality that could also add to the feel. As a keyboard guy, I dig the arpeggio continuum sound and drive.
Nothing wrong with lean and simple, your mix is good, just the lack of invention and wit makes it to far out of your "pigeon hole" - which was defined by unique wit and invention more so than genre.
Do you like Additive Drums better than BFD? [ Reply to This ]
