Description:
Inspired the first-ever sighting of a Red Footed Falcon in the Western Hemisphere and the mass mania it caused(!) I shot the blurry photo through a birder's telescope. Believe it or not, thousands of people came to see the bird. I just happened to be on vacation.

Lyrics:
Falcon flies into the breeze
of an island lost at sea
doesn't know how far off course he's been
10.000 miles maybe more
from his family on the shore
just a dance across the ocean floor
falcon freeman
cast out of eden
falcon freeman
how could you leave them
the children wonder why you came
reporters struggle to explain
the president demands to know your name
the faithful fly on silver wings
a flock of pilgrims gathering
we've traveled all this way to hear you sing
falcon freeman
cast out of eden
falcon freeman
how could you leave them
red footed falcon
caught you red handed

Hardware:
Gibson LP Deluxe, Yamaha Acoustic, SM57 mic, Zoom PS02 for amp sim, Kurzweil PC88 as controller, Tascam US428 interface

Keep flying &mdash 09/02/04 - 10:02:58 AM
Such an honest Neil Young style. And what a great chorus
hook and wonderful lyrics. I was amazed that it is about a
real falcon. The lyrics are such a perfect metaphor for
other issues, other things, both personal and global. This
is a very solid song. I would have the rhythm guitar
slightly louder, and consider using an organ or something
other than such an obvious MIDI synth (which takes away
a bit from the straightforward style of your singing and
songwriting). Really good track.

Thanks Tobin!

It's funny how songwriting works, because originally it was going to be
nothing more than a song about the bird. After I named the bird "Freeman,"
purely for alliterative purposes -- it just sounded good -- I started thinking
more about the spirit. Then the "Free man" led me to a whole bunch of other
possible implications. Is it about slavery? Is it the classic Adam and Eve story?
Is it about longing for home? Is it about people's curiosity? I'm not really sure
what it's about now, it seems to hold different meanings for different listeners,
which is more than I could ever hope for.

As far as the rhythm guitar level goes, you may be right. But when I had it
louder it felt like it took away from the airiness I was trying to achieve. Lets see
what others think!

Oh and Neil Young is my hero!

beautifully done &mdash 09/04/04 - 09:19:03 AM
You've created a wonderful, gliding-on-air mood in this
song. I can SEE that falcon flying!

I like the contrast of music background when you shift
from the falcon to the reporters and the president. It
becomes a bit dry and "angsty" at that point. Very
effective!

Something about the mix sounded just a bit "hollow", in
my headphones at least. I could hear the highs and lows
well, but not as much middle.

Your vocals are very good....I wish they were a little more
present in the mix, as they were at the very end when you
sang "caught you red handed".

Very, very nice tune. Great job!

Gently placed elements &mdash 09/04/04 - 12:31:26 PM
Man. I like the way you leisurely bring in various
instruments. The song is nicely laid back, reflecting the
unhurried nature of wildlife which, in my mind, is in
contrast with the frenetic pace of the news media. An
unexpected joy to come across this one! Thanks for
sharing this bird story.
