...a music store somewhere in a big city, early afternoon with sheets of rain polishing everything. I've had a couple of brats at the deli a few blocks down, feeling pretty good with nowhere to go, and just happened to hear this arresting piece of music coming from inside the store. "Wow" I think, "who's that?"
I head inside. It's darker, and the floor creaks as I wander between the racks of old vinyl, cassettes and countless forgotten CDs to where the speakers are playing this hypnotic music. The proprietor is an android, with a late-70s 8-track cassette stuck in his right cranial music port.
"Didn't know you could still get 8-track interfaces," I said pleasantly.
The android nodds slightly - they can't smile, so this is the accepted gesture. "Can't. I built this myself."
"Is that what's playing on the speakers?"
The android shakes his head, and directs a laser pointer to another interface unit on a cluttered desk. "Direct download from MacJams Planet, somewhere in the Terran System. Circa 2007, Terran calander I believe - the vintage files."
I whistled. MacJams Planet... of course. "Who is it?"
"MacJammer Bud, if the data reads correctly."
"Really?" MacJammer Bud had been a prolific and legendary artist of the ara... but this sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before. "Thanks for the heads-up." Tapping my own cranial interface, I formed the mental command sequence MJ_PLANET_DOWNLOAD: MJBUD: WITH FRIENDS LIKE, and grinned. This tune really was freakin' awesome. It was too bad that I'd been built 300 years after Bud's era, but hey...
At least my generation of android could smile.
