Description:
The full title of this piece is "With Friends Like Joe McCarthy Who Needs Enemies?"

This started as a whomping drum extravaganza using my newly acquired Drums on Demand. This afternoon I decided to see what it sounded like without the drums. Here it is.

Many thanks to the following folks at the freesound project.

Hey! &mdash 09/25/07 - 05:25:11 PM
I knew a Brain McCarthy in NYC I think HE became a cop. HE was a friend. MAn this is like a whole side of Bud I never heard. So ya got D on D sounds like a whole new road all you need is some gas sunglasses a beer or three and your drivin. Dont forget to pick up some friends along the way

Yeah - DOD is sweet - &mdash 09/25/07 - 05:32:04 PM
I actually really liked the drums I had behind this - but I decided to strip them off and use them for a rock tune with real instruments. This is - as I'm sure you can tell - a loop fest.

D/L! &mdash 09/25/07 - 05:38:05 PM
Dude! I downloaded this before it was even half way through! Dark and nasty, I can hear them listening in to my conversations right now! A great departure. You inspire me as usual with your eclecticism!

I'm flattered - thanks. I always find it interesting to see what happens when you strip off the glue and let the rest just hang. It's the beauty of digital - never could have done that with my old four track. Got lucky this time.

for a second listen. Great use of loops - really well done. Love that false ending. Rather weird and compleling at the same time. Clever stuff!

weird and compelling is a nice compliment.

nice one Bud &mdash 09/25/07 - 06:33:53 PM
see you've been doing some geo-tag spelunking. this sounds different for you, but not really unexpected (which is one way of saying I expect a lot from you). what drums did you end up using for this? cool sounds. let me know know what you think of DOD.

DOD Hard Off Beat drum samples that were really intense - tight and terse. I absolutely love the way they sound - and there's a good range of breaks and fills in the set. My only beef is that not all sets have single hits. Anyway - I built the tune basically as you hear it with some Analog TR808 Apple loops added for texture. When I stripped the big bashers off - I added a little more TR808 and twiddled the mix a bit and the result is what you hear now.
Sometimes I'll build a song with loops and then take it apart and replace everything with real instruments - changing the bass etc. as I go along. The loops help me sketch in the structure.
Thanks or your nice comment BTW - just trying to keep up with the pace around here.

Really cool piece. So much cool vibes going on over a cool groove. The vocal effects are slick.
When I think about it you are one of the few that can song gendre all over the place and make it work.

Don't Know &mdash 09/26/07 - 05:54:21 AM
Brian McCarthy that I can remember, but this sounds very urgent, furtive and secretive. Great bass that carries most of this. A very interesting and enjoyable listen... it could have carried on longer for me, Cheers M

Just luvin this. Very sexy groove and great use use of the audio clips. Couldn't say what it would have sounded like with the big drums but this is just very fine sounding. You seem to stretch out alot as an artist.
Bravo

I find the possibilities GB offers kind of limitless and as a result I just sit down and go - rarely do I have a plan going in. When I do it often gets subverted - like this one.

Like Maurice &mdash 09/27/07 - 01:44:59 AM
above - we don't know too much about Joe McCarthy in the UK, will have to google it.
Great track - love the effects. I thought you must be using the tempo changes in GB4 but then saw it's GB3 - how did you speed/slow the vocals?
Just realised he was the one that condemned lots of actors as communist in the 50's.
Cheers
Len

Well actually - &mdash 09/27/07 - 04:06:49 PM
the vocals are pretty much the way I found them at the Freesound Project. The warped "friend" track dropped right in - just did a little pushing and pulling - but the warp was in the original recording. Genius - right.

I'm Walking Past &mdash 09/27/07 - 07:06:12 AM
...a music store somewhere in a big city, early afternoon with sheets of rain polishing everything. I've had a couple of brats at the deli a few blocks down, feeling pretty good with nowhere to go, and just happened to hear this arresting piece of music coming from inside the store. "Wow" I think, "who's that?"

I head inside. It's darker, and the floor creaks as I wander between the racks of old vinyl, cassettes and countless forgotten CDs to where the speakers are playing this hypnotic music. The proprietor is an android, with a late-70s 8-track cassette stuck in his right cranial music port.

"Didn't know you could still get 8-track interfaces," I said pleasantly.

The android nodds slightly - they can't smile, so this is the accepted gesture. "Can't. I built this myself."

"Is that what's playing on the speakers?"

The android shakes his head, and directs a laser pointer to another interface unit on a cluttered desk. "Direct download from MacJams Planet, somewhere in the Terran System. Circa 2007, Terran calander I believe - the vintage files."

I whistled. MacJams Planet... of course. "Who is it?"

"MacJammer Bud, if the data reads correctly."

"Really?" MacJammer Bud had been a prolific and legendary artist of the ara... but this sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before. "Thanks for the heads-up." Tapping my own cranial interface, I formed the mental command sequence MJ_PLANET_DOWNLOAD: MJBUD: WITH FRIENDS LIKE, and grinned. This tune really was freakin' awesome. It was too bad that I'd been built 300 years after Bud's era, but hey...

At least my generation of android could smile.

How can something be retro and futuristic at the same time? I think you just bent space and time! Absolutely brilliant piece of work - sounds awsome with headphones.

Need to invest in DOD.

Cheers, Kev.

the funny thing is - there's nothing from DOD left in this tune. Still - they are great drums - and will be featured on my next tune I'm sure.
