Description:
Again a song about love.. the love for life, and where we understand that we are in the same boat...
Lyrics:
Well I wonder what would happen
If they came up with a gun filled with love
And if they used it in a war
would the soldier's turn hate to love
If the governments agreed on
joining hands around one world
would we fight against each other
or would primitive convictions fall
You might say it is a childish dream I have
but it is the only one
'cause we are one, we are one

The bass.. &mdash 09/30/07 - 03:56:48 PM
Thanks for mentioning the bass. I think the kind of busy bass playing I did here works because I left out the drums at some places. It then opens up more room for the bass to have some fun in:)
Thanks

good to hear a new on Thor. Full spirit in the soulmanship of Marvin Gaye & Al Green. This really moves. I found how interesting it kept a defined beat and groove with so little drums used here. [ Reply to This ]
Marvin &mdash 09/30/07 - 04:11:15 PM
Marvin Gaye & Al Green is high up on my list of artists I dig, so I'm thrilled if you think I'm infected with a touch of their spirit.
I was kind of surprised myself about how the beat seemed to work without drums. It happened more or less by accident. I used a dummy drum pattern when playing all other instruments, and silenced it when I started looking for the drum patterns I was going to use here. Then I discovered that I could have this going without any... Well I had to throw in some grooves here and there...;)

Hello thoddi &mdash 09/30/07 - 12:24:06 AM
Made a big smile, about the the fancy gun.
The underlying rhythm you cooked up, just simmers, and percolates, with real fine guitars. Lots of rhythm happening.
I might have mixed the acoustic up a bit in the mix,
you played it with so much spirit.
I really dig the way you kicked the drums in and out of the mix. Nice touch! What a great boost. You had me playin my air high hat with a pencil over here.
Your search for Idealism is a sad dream in me.
Its like, why the f#@& don't 'they' get it.
John Lennon and his "Imagine" enters my mind as I follow your lyric.
You have a very effective way of delivering such a profound message, with an outstanding vocal performance all round.
very hip and soulful.
peace blues man, peace to you
spread the word
thanks for this
this is huge

Yeah, I searched ebay for such a gun, but no luck so far...
Thank you much for such a comprehensive and encouraging comment. I enjoyed it now, and know I will come back to read it several times:)
Glad I made you play that air high hat with your pencil. Wonder what you used for kick drum...

heard your music before, and i was a little worried when i saw the "soul" tag, but i gotta say: this is great. it reminds me a little of west coast psychedelia circa 1968. like ritchie havens jamming with the jefferson airplane. like the acoustic rhythm, that rhodes part is cool, and the harmonies and electric guitar are way cool. great job.i need to check out the rest of your back catalog.

Well,,, sing it... &mdash 09/30/07 - 04:24:52 AM
It's a sweet thing, hearing that you're back, Thor - And it's even sweeter, this bit of goodness that you've presented to share with us.
This tunage of yours got me to thinkn' - "what would happen if they came out w/ a gun filled w/ love"... I'd be a beautiful thing - The scary part is that those who start wars, seem to always claim that they're backed by the words of "what is love"...
Maybe these are the only folks that need to be shot in the heart w/ this gun of magic that youl sing of - It could be an even more wonderful place then it is here on this little blue marble...
Thanks for getting me to thinking, tapping and quite a bit of, head bobbing!
Good on you, sir! Cheers! [ Reply to This ]
hey man &mdash 10/01/07 - 03:20:43 PM
Nice to see you drop in here:)
Don't overdo that head bopping... it may cause severe dizziness...
If I got you thinking all that with my simple song, I think did something good. And I think you're right about who we need to shoot with this new gizmo... but then we all should take a bullet from it every now and then just to keep focus on the good things:)

good to hear... &mdash 09/30/07 - 11:04:28 AM
... a new one from you Thor. And this is a good one to listen to, certainly for the words and heart. But also for the soulful instruments and more... really well delivered vocals. I especially like the vox harmonies. The close/tight harmonies are perfect for this song, like an exclamation point of your message.
Marvin G. does come to mind in his early seventies songs. But another song came to me that this reminded me of... by Poco of all groups.... "Faith in the Families." Some similar feel in instrumentation and vocals.
You do have amazing command of a number of instruments... that with your soulful singing and songwriting always make for a worthwhile song to listen to.
cheers... [ Reply to This ]

Always great ... &mdash 09/30/07 - 07:53:11 PM
... to hear a new Thor song! I really enjoyed this a lot, but my 'phones had a little trouble with the kick drum - as no-one else mentioned it, maybe it's my phones distorting rather than the kick clipping. Terrific song - I liked Michael's description of Richie Havens and Jefferson Airplane :)
Lovely playing, singing and production Thor - and the words are spot-on!

kick drum &mdash 10/04/07 - 03:53:35 PM
Actually, I tweaked the frequencies in particular a bit to get a clearer definition of the bass and the kick drum in this one. I like them to be in different areas so they don't muddle up in the same space.
I might have overdone that a bit... As long as I use GarageBand only, I guess the tools there might be a bit unsteady, But of course also my listening/monitoring devices plays a big part here.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the song Neil. Alway a pleasure to have a visit from down under:)

... "Crowded House" ... with soul! Superb production and sound space. Your voice is so strong on its own, I'd like to hear one verse, or phrase, "a capella." The acoustic chords may add a little depth if spread panned L-&-R in a later verse, creating a variety, maybe wrapped around the harp solo. [ Reply to This ]
L-&-R &mdash 10/07/07 - 03:46:25 PM
What a nice comment to read Alimar.
I appreciate your comments about the panning. Mixing tips and trix that may enhance my productions are always welcome:)
Not sure if I'm confident enough about my own singing to do an a capella part though;)
Thanks!

I'll come and play my song in Wisconsin any day. Maybe you could bring your tenor sax, and join me? In fact I visited your parts of the world some years ago. I was in Wisconsin most of the time, but drove through some parts in southern Michigan also... Probably not far from Ann Arbor:) Those parts of USA reminded me much of Norway.

Love Gun &mdash 10/04/07 - 03:21:55 PM
...if only. Jeeez, if only. I commented on Bud's "Baghdad Blues" about wondering where all the protest songs are, from the angry fists-in-the-air anthems to the poetic, groovin' soul pieces. I'm realizing that they're all here on MacJams!
This has such a sweet, idealistic groove, and a poetic question that could have been asked in 1968. Sad that we're still asking. There is a real power to this, power I can hear in the dusty grooves of old 45 records from the era of the Vietnam War. Maybe its the Marvin Gaye echoes I'm hearing, I don't know... but there's something very timeless about the sound here. Excellent. [ Reply to This ]

Nicely done, Thor. Great arrangement and blend. But jguma is right. When the kick comes in after the harmonica solo, I hear crackling on my studio monitors.
But still a great tune and great listen. ;)

Funk and blues &mdash 10/08/07 - 08:30:16 AM
I dig how you add a touch of funk to what you do. I enjoyed how you mixed your vocals on this. Not sure about the choice of drums, nor how they drop out a third of the way in (again later) - the distortion on the bass drum and metallic nature of the snare lent a certain ambience that I initially liked but later seemed incongruent. I liked the almost southern rock backing vocals. The tasty lead guitar is my favorite part of the track. I can see this being a kind of live sing-along jam tune that would have people dancing between the tables. I kind of wanted it to build into a huge funkenstein party thing by the end, with horns and all; I felt a bit like the track wasn't done yet. Still, very enjoyable. Thanks for pointing me to it.
