Description:
Got a blow-out special mandolin so I had to make up a tune and record it.
I made two passes with the mandolin, as you'll hear. The drums are a modified Apple loop, first in lofi and tuned very low, then normal with extra appropriate hits. The bass is a GB bass played on MIDI. Absolutely no reverb was used in the making of this piece. Thanks for listening!

Hardware:
My cheap Kel mics.

Software:
Newest GB.

Thanks! delightful instruments, mandolins. I toyed with adding stuff and ended up just leaving it as a short mandolin ditty as it ended up sounding quite "full". But now that I think about it... I guess this could develop much further. Sure... I would be honored to collab with you.

Nice. &mdash 10/04/07 - 10:59:55 AM
I don't know if you sing Dyno but this wee tune deserves a vocal line and a bridge. I see your Mando floating on a gentle Pacific swell towards a wide beach where you're waiting to fish it out and give it a right good thrash. Be calm.

That &mdash 10/04/07 - 11:47:21 AM
idea made me smile. Hmmmmmmm. I'll cogitate on that a while.

this is purely pleasant drones on my eardrums

nice how you bring up the drums from lo-fi to full - it works

thanks!

(lots of silence at the end - gotta fix that!)

Nice! &mdash 10/07/07 - 04:09:16 AM
Lovely tune! The bass is VG. I wish I could do bass.... it takes me forever and it's never right!

Nice one.

hate to admit it but it did NOT come naturally. It took three days of experimenting... shortening and lenthening, adding and deleting notes here and there. I think that when they show a band on TV, the bass player should be the one they leave the camera on, really. I've played guitar for 44 years and I still can't do bass justice. It is a real art and the foundation of a lot of music.

Anyways, your kind words are payment for some hard work. Thanks!

Very cool... &mdash 10/09/07 - 05:42:21 PM
...check out funk and get a nice acoustic mando groove...really sweet.

Reverb's nice, but not a necessity, by any means. Not needed here, that's for sure. Those mandolines ring true...

Nice stuff...

I &mdash 10/09/07 - 07:24:08 PM
really try not to get carried away with reverb so I surprised myself when I actually had none on this and it still sounded quite full to me.
Thanks for your comments,GPick.

Always .. &mdash 10/11/07 - 01:50:31 PM
.. nice to hear another mandolin player .. you might
even have inspired to put that new set of strings I
fought hard to get, on :o)

Groovy tune .. I'd go for adding acoustic/electric guitar
and some vocal melody .. it's catchy, in a TV theme
tune kinda way... a chorus - could do with a bridge
.. sounds like a song were you don't need a separate
verse or chorus in the backing - just in the singing.

Good mix and recording of the mandolin - although I
thought at the lo-fi start it was a bit far back .. I don't know how you did it .. but I would have taken a
piece recorded 'normally' then put some AU Filter
on it .. and put it on the drums too .. so they
sound like they are in the same space .. until
everything comes in.

No reverb .. wow. I've only done 2 pieces with
my mandolin: Minister's daughter & Where there's a will ..check 'em out if you have time.

Thanks for sharing.

I &mdash 10/11/07 - 03:08:31 PM
did have an acoustic guitar part all figured out for this but at the last minute I figured it was a threat to the mandolin. Poor mandolin... all weenie and such.

I have so many ideas right now I think I will do them all in simple form so I don't forget anything and then later build on them. Thanks for the suggestions, APB... we are definitely thinking the same way about this piece. Okay, now I gotta go hear dat mando of yours.

This is a top groove. Really clear rich sound you've got here - shows how you can keep things simple and still get a great end result out of GB.

Good stuff,
Phil

Picasso &mdash 10/29/07 - 10:35:31 AM
How you get that, I love Picasso he has a bottle of BASS beer in one of his paintings, Sir Bass get it. Bass was the first brewery in England, i'm not English but my name is.

Genre-cinematic-Dramatic accent.

This is a great lil ditty, you could use it like it is in a film.

Really good sounds here &mdash 11/15/07 - 09:40:19 AM
Nice job of capturing the sound of the mandolin. I like the soundstage you have established here with careful panning of the two mandolins you have made a rich, full soundstage with very minimal instruments.
The song does sound as if it could use a lead melody over what you have and it could use a bridge and then a coda. It somehow feels incomplete. But, hey, it is your music and you can make it any way YOU want to. ;).

welcome to macjams

Thanks for your comments. This song is a case of "can't wait to record something" so, yes it could use some development. I am currently working on a much more involved piece and I am not in a hurry so it will be more complete.

Great tune &mdash 02/10/08 - 05:09:22 PM
Everything is well balanced. It seems to call for something in the way of a lead to round it off. That's just my impression though and it is a good production as is as well.

Cheers,
Doug
