Description:
This piece was commissioned by a modern/contemporary dance company and presented as a story piece: a woman slowly descends into schizo-madness as her reason is eclipsed by a stream of memories, fantasies, and delusions. an oversexed French maid. a woman in a busty flowing red dress lying on top of a piano. a maniacal pianist, cloaked and hooded, seeming undead. a manic guitarist in whiteface. a demented opera singer on a box dancing circles around herself and her parasol. ghoulish ballroom dancers bustin' out some disco. a thriller-style dance combination after the declamation of "jus' like that". There is a wall of sound and layer upon layer here; with repeated listenings, you will surely pick up on more nuance and detail -- Jus' like that. hehehe

filled to overflowing with... "jus like dat!" &mdash 10/05/07 - 11:10:53 AM
intriguing and delicious, the way you interlocked the puzzle pieces here... I actually really really liked the way you chose, when one piece of the puzzle didn't quite fit (Carmen's descending sequence from her aria), you had her slightly alter it so that it did fit, which I took as metaphorically altering herself to fit the shifting perceived reality around her. This made my head spin, and danced delicately between alluring and cacophonous. I picked up little bits of many things, definitely have to listen a few times (with Spanish & French translation hats on). Loved all the laughter, some sounded intentionally forced, others manically out of control, awesome. Ole and Bravo! Now, where's the door to this little room?

very nicely arranged, believable soundstage; this song took me to an actual room with dancing and debauchery, and I wanted to stay and participate. Alas, the song ended...

Yow! &mdash 10/07/07 - 05:48:48 PM
The tango as a genre has such delicious baggage attached to it. What is so intriguing about your tango is the background dialogue, the laughter, etc. Feels like a totally "live" performance in a smoky cabaret or saloon or something. Great mix of all elements. This could easily be a soundtrack. There is just a little suggestion of sleeze throughout. Perfect.

Second time I've tried &mdash 10/09/07 - 11:30:05 AM
to leave a comment on this (I unintentionally toasted out my first attempt).
Anyway, the gist of it was: I really dig how SEPARATE all the elements in this are. I suspect the real work was mixing it. Sounds like it was a blast throwing all that stuff in! I think we could all benefit from a few more commissions, too.
