Description:
I posted this song when I first joined MJ and although it didn't get alot of traffic... it has always been a personally satisfying song... One friend who used to perform this live with me always criticized the recording because it didn’t have any of my “guitar noodeling” that he was accustomed to in the live performance... I bought new AT 4041’s a month ago, so I tested them on this song... and remixed the song in Logic pro... I don’t often repost things but I have had no chance to complete anything new in a while.... It’s the most personal to date ... in that I really wanted to identify an experience that haunted me... and I was never able to quite put my finger on it... I had tried a few times to write about it, and came up way short, mostly because the fleeting experience was so hard to articulate... C S Lewis describes it in “Surprised by Joy”... and oddly enough Paul William's seamed to have scratched the surface with the song “rainbow connection”... well the song was kind of a milestone for me... in that I felt I had successfully painted an abstract of what I was trying to get at... and sometimes music is the one vehicle that can take us all the way to those deepest places, that require a different language of the heart....
Lyrics:
WHEN CHILDHOOD BROUGHT NIGHTMARES, & I DARE NOT SLEEP
I WOULD LIE STILL ...AWAKE.
AND ANGELS OF COMFORT, COME STAND BY MY BED
AND GUARD EVERY BREATH I TAKE
WELL I SAW THIS THRU YOUNG EYES, AND MEMORY FADES
THIS ALL COULD BE SOME MISTAKE.
CAN I GET BACK WHAT I NEVER HAD
HAVE I BEEN MISPLACED DO I BELONG THERE INSTEAD
SOMETIMES I CATCH GLIMPSES... THEN I FEEL SAD
SOMETIMES I CATCH GLIMPSES... THEN I DON’T FEEL SO BAD
OFF IN THE DISTANCE, I THOUGHT I HEARD VOICES
SOMEBODY CALLED MY NAME.
TO TELL ME OF NEW LANDS, A TIME WITHOUT END
A LIGHT FROM ETERNAL FLAME
WAS THIS SOME KIND OFF TRICK, I TURNED AROUND QUICKLY
EVERYTHING LOOKED THE SAME.
CAN I GET BACK WHAT I NEVER HAD
HAVE I BEEN MISPLACED DO I BELONG THERE INSTEAD
SOMETIMES I CATCH GLIMPSES... THEN I FEEL SAD
SOMETIMES I CATCH GLIMPSES... THEN I DON’T FEEL SO BAD
FOR A MOMENT I AM SWEPT AWAY
I’M NOT SURE WHERE, BUT I NEVER STAY
ONLY GLIMPSES OF SOMEWHERE....SOMEDAY
ONLY GLIMPSES OF SOMEWHERE.....SOMEDAY
ONLY GLIMPSES OF SOMEWHERE.....SOMEDAY
WHERE HAVE I BEEN...WHERE WILL I GO
WILL I SEE HIM .... WHEN WILL I KNOW
YOU COULDN’T SEE ME BUT I WAS THERE
YOU COULDN'T HEAR ME BUT I SPOKE CLEARLY
YOU COULDN’T SEE ME BUT I WAS THERE
YOU COULDN'T HEAR ME BUT I SPOKE CLEARLY
OFF IN THE DISTANCE, I THOUGHT I HEARD VOICES
SOMEBODY CALLED MY NAME.

I liked it... &mdash 10/05/07 - 10:14:37 PM
back then. Still liking it now. Downloaded it then... and now again. Your reference to Lewis in Surprised by Joy and Paul William's Rainbow Connection (a favorite) are apt.

Blesses your heart... good stuff... it may be about the only way this OLD MAN can make a lady smile anymore... unless they like corny jokes... and as for never disappoint... you may want to ask my wife... she'd rather have the lawn mowed than a new version of this... [ Reply to This ]

A really great tune and well worth the effort to re-tool it! Hey bro...you gotta send me a note telling me what settings in Logic you used to mix the bass. Outstanding sound for an outstanding song.

You show us much more than a glimps of your great skills as a musician here Scott.
Oh, what a beautiful treat you have given us to enjoy Scott. The words are gripping. We are probably more open to the spiritual world as children. Not having those barriers that we build during time.
Your music is stunningly beautiful. The harmonies you present are pure beautiful. Your guitar playing and the way this song floats with its subtle changes along the way.
Just pure beauty my friend:) [ Reply to This ]

I've heard this before &mdash 10/07/07 - 06:39:36 PM
but this is truly one of the best guitar-voices I've heard on the net for this style. So James Taylorish but so much YOUR style!
The thing I can only say is that this tune should be either made famous by either James Taylor or you!
This is superb voice-folk at it's best!
Dam@#$ this GOOD !!!!!!!!!
Way to go Scott!
If any higher ups in radio-land are reading.
Get this on the air because it deserves to be there. On the TOP of the charts!
And if it doesn't get there, it is another example of how GREAT musicians like you scott are NOT receiving there JUST due to be heard by millions and millions!
This is that type of tune!!!!

This is a wonderful work of the soul Scott. I know your song touched mine. Beautiful lyrics that take me back to a time long ago, and drag me along with you an you voyage to purity. Magnificent vocals and the music fits perfectly in every respect. .
I think this sounds just a little different than the other mix I heard on iComp, but I'm not to sure about that. It's hard to say for sure without being able to play them side by side and listen line for line.
It really doesn't matter though because it's such a beautiful piece of work. Thank you for sharing this mix with us Scott

What they said... &mdash 10/09/07 - 07:17:30 PM
I agree with almost all of these comments. Just to be a bit critical, I should point out that the lead vocal has some pitch problems here and there, which sort of takes it out of the "Air Supply" level of vocal perfection that could make this type of song overly treacly, but if there was room for improvement, I'd say it's probably in that area. But I hope you understand that though the imperfection of the lead vocal is a negative, it's also a positive. It's treading a line, but that's probably a good thing.

Hi JIm &mdash 10/10/07 - 05:28:21 PM
My vox will always be pitchy I'm afraid... it's one of the reasons I learned to do vocal arrangements... to hide... I could use one of those pitch fixers, but i kind of hate the way they sound... what i really need is JT to sing it :) [ Reply to This ]

The intricate, exacting, newly added "guitar noodeling" as you referred to it, added rich warmth to what was already an astounding piece. Your signature, gentle voice, highly proficient accompaniments, and poignant lyrics display an authentic mastery of the art. It was refreshing to be reminded of a purer, more innocent time when an uncluttered heart and sincere, receptive childhood eyes were capable of GLIMPSING into a world where adults sometime lose access. Or, I dunno, your voice?
I mean, or, your outlook?
Okay, okay, okay. How about you tell me in excruciating detail about how you get that acoustic guitar sound, other than, like, the bit about practicing a lot for years and years?
I can see why you like the David Wilcox 'Vista'...definitely a connection from here to there...
Lovely song. Time to start that 'Scott Carmichael' playlist in the iPod...
You really oughta start planning NOW to get in your car, pack a guitar, and come visit this end of New England...

Scott, you make me glad. I have been in a protracted funk lately, and your music lifts my spirits. MacJams has a lot of talented artists, but none more-so than you. I love the subtlety of your lyrics, the powerful message, the warmth of personality that shines through when you sing, your guitar playing, your arranging.... what's left?
