Description:
I thought I'd try something a little different here by offering up two tracks written and released together just like the old days of 45's. I took as my model The Beatles "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" b/w "This Boy". Side A rocks - and side B is the slow-dance number.
Side A: "Every Day"
Hats off to Vic Holman for the mix and backing guitar - the man's a genius. This tune also features lyrics by Volcanique (aka Dave Wald). Dave and I have a band together and this started life in our rehearsal space.
Side B: "Girl in Black"
This is another collaboration with my brother Willnlf. Will provided the lyrics and I did the music and mix. One of these days we may actually be on the same coast for a jam.
Thanks for taking the time to give a listen - I kept both tunes as short as possible.
PS: Rik Berryere inspired this project with his comment about AM radio on the song Sally. Thanks Rik.

Lyrics:
Side A: Every Day (Volcanique)Extruded. Excluded. Unloaded.
Round and round we’re whirled.
Free flowing, blowing, glowing
Born into this world.
Every day’s a new day,
Every day.
From the start it’s up.
The door’s locked shut
But what do we know?
You just go, go, go.
Find a good spot
To take your mark
Make a quick Start
Ignite your spark.
Every day’s a new day,
Everyday
Rage onto the scene.
What does it mean?
You laugh and you scream.
You cry and you dream.
Every day’s anew day,
Every day.
Extruded, Excluded. Unloaded.
Round and round we’re whirled.
Free flowing, blowing, glowing
Born into this world.
Side B: Girl in Black (Willnlf)
chalk white skin
coal black hair
ruby lips
distant stare
sits alone
reads a book
someone speaks
never looks
clothes are black
shoes are too
on her hand
small tattoo
graceful walk
hint of smile
who she is
not a style
goes to class
gets good grades
her own thoughts
on the page
understands
time and place
occupies
her own space
other kids
seem to know
she’s for real
not a show
years from now
she’ll look back
see herself
all in black
in her heart
she’ll be proud
she stood out
from the crowd
chalk white skin
coal black hair
ruby lips
distant stare

Quite a contrast between the two songs. Neat hearing them together.
Thanks
Bill
bud
I always liked hearing "the other side" of an artist on the B side - hence the contrast.

I'm glad you like this little experiment. Thanks for your enthusiastic response. I had a real problem getting the mix together on Every Day so I asked Vic to help out. I think he did a great job considering how unsophisticated my recordings are - and his guitar addition really helped under the verses.
1st Piece : Sir Bud, this is a very great piece, I've always loved Vic's guitar and his stuff, the beats here very great, the mixing in the 1st class ..
2nd Piece : Great bass, the vocal is more greater and the music is a very fine and the beats sounds so well to my ears !
.. WOW .. You guys did a very very great job, such fine 2 pieces ! Thanks for sharing

I had fun putting this together and working with Vic was a blast.
Dj French Toast
concept ! great colabs and very nice songs indeed : ) Really like the lennon/acid rock song the second one .....hey did you know that they used to sell record players for your car back in the day ...really you would set it up in the trunk and they had one that would actually flip the record for you man I want one how cool would that be : ) Nice tunes man !
bud
and roll through town. Wild idea. Thanks for taking the time to listen to two songs.
Vic Holman
..for a slumber party! Oh we giggled and played games sure. And the ferocious pillow fights. To bad Bucky got sick from to many ham sandwiches and had to go home.
Anyway i liked the A/B side concept. Your vocals and lead guitar on the first where dynamite, kinda like crazy horse and A. Coppers "I'm Eighteen"
The second tune is enough to make one want to wear nehru jackets and medallions.
What a party.
bud
to this deal Vic - you really impressed me with your skill and patience. Glad you like side B too cause I'm sending you a Nehru jacket and some beads in a patchouli scented box.
willnlf
...contrast between the tunes. Your vocals reach another level of risk and they both work well. You're right about the bass and I really like the musical chorus in Girl in Black. The sitar-like raga feel is perfect. Serves as a nice frame for the solitary girl, gets at the mystery. You got my $.99!
bud
is that a polite way of saying that I'm treading on thin ice - walking a fine line? Thanks for another great set of lyrics.
willnlf
I'm just envious of your range and power!
guitapick
How cool to hear the 2 sides of a single, again...
Great concept, executed beautifully be everyone involved. And you're right about the upbeat then romantic flipside. Cool. Like the movement into the Harrison sitar line...nice strings before it...
Real fine songwriting, folks...
I absolutely love the crackling...

Tryin' To Get It Right is getting heavy rotation on my iPod.
five_extra_arms
You guys are grounded!
Now up to your rooms!
I thought I liked side A best, but after 3 good listens, I still don't know which is better. They belong together (north pole south pole) but wow. I love the vocals, I love the guitars and I love the fact that you gave us both sides and i didn't have to flip my mp3.
I'm so relieved to see that there is hope for the future of music. You guys never bore me. You never even come close to looking like you're about to run out of ideas, nor play it safe.
This is a band I would love to be in.
God bless you all for pulling the barrel out of my mouth and giving me a reason to live, I mean, for such a great song.
Vic, you are a genius as bud accused you of. I guess al you guys are in a club or something where you just hang out and do cool things together. Man, I'd trade my paper clip collection for a judge's decision to nullify a restraining order that forces me to stay 500 feet from your band room. Oh well.
Thanks again.
You are the Beatles.
bud
too kind
echoroom
Great songs... ahh, the days when bands wrote decent a and b-sides, and you'd rush home and play 'em both.
2 different songs, both pull me back to my youth... can you release this on vinyl pleeze?
steve
bud
at the Sears and Roebuck when I was a very young lad. It was a department store. I thought I was really cool. Thanks for stopping by Steve.

i thought the nickle taped to the tonearm had fallen off but no it was the harrison-esque guitar. brilliant work by all the buds.

great job guys!
cool idea. the A/B contrast of the songs plays well into the 45 RPM record A/B sides. like back in the days when both sides were good. these days you only get one song for your buck.
those synth horns sound sooo familiar... where have i heard that? this is gonna bug me til i remember.
big there's a big hole in your song!
thanks
bud
but I can't figure it out either. I actually took a fingerstyle guitar loop turned it into horns and then took it apart with the pencil tool. After that I taught myself hoe to play it on the keys and guitar. I just figure it sounded Beatles.
lengold
somehow managed to leave a double fave by mistake on quite a few songs. I have just been trying to replicate that and of course now won't work, shame.
You just keep surprising - something new again. Do you ever sleep?
Great collaboration - both songs sound fantastic to me and very enjoyable listens.
Cheers
Len
bud
and when i do sleep I dream of electric sheep. Oops. My secret's out.
Thanks Len.
Ok first Im gonna need a couple more times to leave anything coherent,, because now im blown away!!!
bud
don't worry about coherency - it's not that important here - thank God.
Psychedelia redivivus! man this is so cool. Old school meets new school in a take no prisoners tour de force! (How's THAT for "sunshine"? Ha ha...)
Awesome acidic guitar soloing and great vocals. LOVE IT!
Be well!
"Kamikaze Ballerina": http://www.macjams.com/song/35895
...equally good. Downright poignant...
I wonder how many MJers remember buying the latest hits on 45 rpm records! ha ha...
We've dated ourselves yet again!
bud
I'm not showing my age - just my vintage. Glad you enjoyed this collective effort. Couldn't have done it without Vic, Will and Dave.
michael2
a concept. sorry I got on this so late (it slipped down the list). I think they are both great songs, but Side B is my fave. When you get done with Vic, you should try a collab with Robyn Hitchcock. Great stuff.
bud
that would be a real treat. Perhaps if we could clone you and five_extra_arms together - with a dash of Vic for guitar - we'd get close.
michael2
you don't think that would be closer to Brian Eno playing Beatles covers with Roky Erikson?
apb
.. and I just love the B-side! .. that catchy sitar
line wonderful .. but I just love the feel .. feeling you can sink back into .. and the singing and
arrangement is top notch.
A-side was good too .. but as with the old vinyl days ..
with the two side just asking to be chosen between ..
I would have ultimately played the B-side most often
to be honest. Great lyrics too.
I think it's the DoD drum loop .. the patterns are great but they seemed a bit 'heavy hit' for the feel of the A-side song .. and the bass drum seems particularly heavy in comparison to the rest of the kit on these phones/monitors...and on some fills the compression
kicks in hard on them .. backing vox perhaps a little too much reverb on them.
Just my observations.
Kudos to y'all - appologies for being late.
bud
thanks for taking so much care in listening. I see your point about the DoD drums in Everyday. The drums were initially built for my song "With friends like..." as my first indulgence with DoD - so I went heavy. I ended up stripping them off "Friends" and then I used them with some tweaks here. They are a bit much for the vibe - good ear. I had a lot of trouble with the mix and Vic rescued the song - but at heart it is flawed.
"Girl in Black" was one of those songs that almost wrote itself once i found the right colors. The Boldt sitar is what did it for me - then it was paint around the edges. But at it's heart are Will's nicely understated lyrics.
...the idea of creating a 45 was just too far out! It brought me right back to those days of still, hot summer afternoons when I'd get to go to Sam The Record Man and check out the wall of 45s and see if That Cool Song I'd heard on CKLC was out yet. Was it? I had that wall's visual image memorized, and knew who was where at a glance just by the positions of the coloured centerpieces of the discs - which was also a very important part of a record's emotional footprint.
And then... there was the sense of anticipation of buying a record, and having to actually wait until I got home before I could actually play it. Wow, that delayed pleasure is a fraction of what it was now (hey, Bud's got a new 45 out! Holy crap, Vic Holman's on it! DOWNLOAD!!!) but I still felt it when I saw the artwork, read the description, hit the download button and watched the little blue 'download' bar fill up on my screen.
What a great pair of tunes! Vic's production and guitars fit naturally with your sound on the A side (love saying that!) while the B side is in for some heavy airplay as well. Wish I could nail where that horn sound takes me... I've been there before, though. This whole thing is a crazy, wonderful concept that works beautifully. Bud, thanks for this. One day I'll treat ya to a real beer.
p.s. Glad to have inspired it. Sometimes I miss those 45 days...
bud
and your 45 obsession - I had it too. Thanks for the inspiration and checking in to listen and comment.
thoddi
Cool with that dual song concept. And both works great. The sitar sounds pretty real. Very good songs, and great performance by you all.

I keep looking for your next tune. Get busy biddy. Thanks for stopping by.

Every Day is a great song. Great drum work and guitar play. The lyrics are brilliant and well sung with mad harmonies (is it same person but just slowed down a bit?).
Girl in black again is well sung and I love the sitar with all the other instruments playing the melody. Really good.
Top marks
bud
The mad harmony vocals are just me trying to sing harmony.
apexcp

how cool is this?? the best 2-for-1 deal i've ever gotten! very cool tracks. i thoroughly enjoyed them both. killer guitar from Vic on the first piece and loved those vocals. incredible drums giving it a driving energy. great stuff. and i love the sound effects of the old LP. those india-inspired sounds of the second piece are great. and i love your bro's stuff. awesome awesome awesome.
