Description:
This instrumental piece has been knocking around my head for a little while and I’ve finally gotten around to getting it down. Unusually for me it’s quite an optimistic, happy, pretty sounding piece. It’s not particularly folky (although the instrumentation is) but in sound it’s probably closest to the Penguin Café Orchestra.

I had a fairly clear idea of what I wanted to do for most of the parts however I’ve improvised some sections as well – just to keep it fresh. I did have other melodic sections and instruments in mind but I felt it was getting too complicated so I cut them out.

It’s all performed on mandolin and fiddle (although the latter is deliberately sounding a bit cello-ish).

In my mind’s eye I have a story which goes with this but it came after the piece was written so I’ll leave you to create your own…

This is much more of a joyful tune than is typical of me - my natural tendency is towards the bittersweet and melancholy. I like your comment about open spaces - the mental images I have of this tune are of being outside in a large space at night full of bright lights and music...

Glad you liked it.

Emotional &mdash 10/09/07 - 09:37:18 PM
How beautiful is this piece? This would be amazing to listen to in a variety of circumstances - if I were walking through the mountains it would cheer me on and help me to enjoy the journey. If I'd just lost someone it would get right to the heart of I was feeling. Then again if I'd just fallen in love it would make me ecstaticly happy.Ohhhhhhhhh! Love it! Bravo! Bet Billy Conolly follows your tracks.Er hope thats not an insult - I'm a bit of a Billy fan

Wow! &mdash 10/10/07 - 06:17:11 AM
If no one else ever comments on this track again I wouldn't mind after feedback like that! Thank you, I feel very honoured.

Don't mind the Billy Connolly comment at all - if he comes on the TV I'm unlikely to change channels... But if he is following my tracks then perhaps he could put me in touch with some of his friends in the music biz... ha ha!

Simplicity &mdash 10/10/07 - 06:47:43 AM
Thank you Mr Nutz - there were other musical phrases I was thinking of adding (and even some bass) but the track got to a level where putting in anything else was just going to be too much. 'Precious' is an interesting word to use - I did feel that this piece was finely balanced between over and under working it and I was scared to do too much in the way of mixing because I quite liked the sound of the unmixed version.

Martyn... &mdash 10/10/07 - 01:49:11 AM
The mandolins sound great but, I love the sound of your violin - so emotive. The composition (as Paddler says) can evoke many different feelings. Superb.
Cheers

Different feelings &mdash 10/16/07 - 06:22:53 AM
Many thanks Len - perhaps the different emotions are embodied in the instruments and the way they're played here (the bright mando lines and the more reflective fiddle lines). Philosophically I believe we rarely experience a pure emotional state (certainly in adulthood...)

I really like this. I have played around with the mando a little bit too, but I'm not very good. This has inspired me to practice more.

Clever and pretty &mdash 10/10/07 - 03:26:59 PM
The mandolin is delicious but the fiddle is something else again! Such a soulful depth of expression you have in your playing.

I think you did right not to clutter it. The purity of all the elements shine through for themselves.

How do you get a fiddle to sound cello-ish?

[ Reply to This ]
'Cello &mdash 10/10/07 - 07:05:08 PM
How did the fiddle sound cello-ish? Partly just playing lower notes, a bit of Eq and the fact that the strings are dirty and encrusted with violin rosin and it's about time I replaced them with new ones!

Thank you for your lovely and encouraging comments.

perfect &mdash 10/10/07 - 04:15:51 PM
its one of those tracks thats immediately accesible and then grows from there. the all acoustic ensemble gives it a very intimate feeling. I think Paddler said it best, when he alluded to the fact it could go with any frame of mind or circumstance. Just a delight.

Revolution by day. &mdash 10/11/07 - 08:38:09 AM
A forest lit by faint moonlight a golden moth floats on lily pad in a little pool. From far away come sounds of a battle, soft thud of shell then silence followed by a cry -' Cut that fucking racket - some of us are trying to get a kip.'
Kinda ruined that wee story. This tune is fab. Great fiddle lines and a quality listen. I'm vaguely interested in what was in your mind's eye when you heard it KK. Be lucky.

I know 3 hour traffic jams well - I used to travel to work on a road joking known in the UK as the world's biggest car park (I think you get the gist!) Very glad that I've managed to contribute something positive to your day.

Lovely piece Martyn &mdash 10/12/07 - 04:55:22 PM
Great playing - especially like the fiddle. Both instruments really nicely recorded. Is this the acoustic or electric fiddle? Sounds rich and warm, so I'm guessing acoustic. Very relaxing, positive vibe - which will make up for the vibe on my next post :)
Like it a lot Martyn.
Cheers,
Neil

Acoustic &mdash 10/13/07 - 07:28:50 PM
You're absolutely right Neil, it's the acoustic fiddle. Look forward to your next post - the next one I'm working on definitely ain't going to be light and fluffy either!

This is just exactly... &mdash 10/14/07 - 12:56:43 PM
...what I wanted to hear just now...

It's so completely alive...

I really hear the Penguin Cafe Orchestra influence...except you tuned your instruments...heh, heh...

I love the 'rough tightness' of this... the mandolin and fiddle alternations are different, but combine to catch the ear and satisfy the restless mind...

Wish I'd caught this one sooner... Straight to the iPod she goes...

Lovely melody. Nice little part for the violin rounds it out well. I like things simple, so I can't imagine what the other parts would have been, this sound very good to me.

Thanks

...lovely comment, I'm flattered! There's often an emotional charge to much of my music which just comes out and surprises me (because I've always seen myself as a bit cool and laid back). I guess it's a kind of summation of the thoughts, memories and dreams which are in my mind as the music emerges.

This is so beautiful... it has a lovely miniature simplicity to it. I like the way it creates its own little world and stays within that - in the way Penguin Cafe pieces did. It's curiously filmic too. What a wonderful discovery.

Thanks Mando! Funny you should say it has a filmic quality, 'er indoors is always saying that about my instrumental pieces.

One of the sweetest sounds I%u2019ve heard. Having listened to Darkwater Side I was expecting some great fiddle but the double mandolin tracks hit the mark too. Apologies if you actually played the mandolin parts in one go %u2013 you must be some mandolin player! I really like the bit where the mandolins fade out for a short while and make a nice space for a few fiddle notes.
Cheers
Steve
