country (104)lonely nights (1)lonely songs (1)sad song (2)lonely (44)sad (129)did I say lonely and sad? (1)folk (355)
Description:
Always wanted to do a country song. So here it is. A "crying in my beer" sad-sack-song lament.

Vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboard piano, synth violin: Jack Miller.

Photo is off the Dingle Peninsula of southwest Ireland.

Lyrics:
Lonely nights, I've been spending too long
Lonely songs, I've been singing to the dawn.

Since you left me high and dry
What was I to do?
All I got is memories of
Spending time with you.

I'm sitting here waiting for the sun to shine,
Wishing I could sleep just to pass the time.
Lonely nights, lonely songs.

Lonely nights, I've been spending too long
Lonely songs, I've been singing to the dawn.

seems just like yesterday
We were having fun
Sure we fought, but then we'd kiss,
And you would call me Hon...
We'd go out each and every night
And we would paint the town.
Now all I do is cry and moan,
And wear this silly frown.

I'm sitting here waiting for the sun to shine,
Wishing I could sleep just to pass the time.
Lonely nights, lonely songs.

Since you left me high and dry
What was I to do?
All I goot is memories of
Spending time with you.

I'm sitting here waiting for the sun to shine,
Wishing I could sleep just to pass the time.
Lonely nights, lonely songs.

Lonely nights I've been spending too long.

... classics? Nice compliment... nice thought. Glad to know this song spoke to you. One never knows how a song will be heard. It doesn't really depend on where the singer/songwriter is coming from. Mostly on the listener. Be well, my friend.

Sad, but not! &mdash 10/11/07 - 08:12:34 PM
I really like how this has fun energy to the words. I really like the chord walk-downs and the harmonica. A "cryin in yer beer "song that is fun to listen to. I think we should all sing the chorus with you.

Aha!... by definition &mdash 10/11/07 - 08:35:38 PM
... a crying-the-beer country song isn't really sad. There is always a wink and a smile as the singer sings his sad lament. And, yes, hopefully everyone listening will join in on the chorus! LOL

Thanks, Roxylee!

get this man a beer.

Fits right on the juke box at the country bar at the end of route 45.
Unfortunately it's only Schmidt beer that they serve. The one with the animals on the can.

Nice job, Jack. It's a clean country sound and I especially liked the harmonica solo.

And congrats on that forthcoming *six-pack* of grandkids. ;)

you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy. (OK... I was born and raised in the suburbs of the northeast).

Thanks for the congrats on #6 grand child. And I am much obliged that you moseyed on over here to give this here song a listen.

Country...but with a twist of celtic. Very nice Jack. Until now I've only ever liked a very few country songs (among them: "Silver Threads and Golden Needles," "A Satisfied Mind" and "Mama Tried"...) I hate the synthetic crapola coming out of Nashville these days (Grand Olde Commercial Brothel). This, however, has a very authentic old timey feel. Mikey likey!

be well!

Hmmmmmm &mdash 10/12/07 - 11:09:06 AM
Well country's roots go back to Celtic music, so I guess it isn't surprising to hear some threads of the Scot/Irish in this one. I have to agree with you about the country music of today, although I like a lot of the old time stuff... too many names to name, but some real good tunes from way back when.

Thanks for stopping in... always nice to get your reaction to a song.

When I was a youngster my mother had several Hank Snow albums. I still remember a few of those old tunes with great fondness...."Honeymoon On A Rocketship," "Old Shep," "The Night I Stole Old Sammy Morgan's Gin," and "A Little Box Of Pine" all come to mind....

Hank was the real deal....

Well, I'm flattered that you like this old guy's music. It's a bit rough 'round the edges (like me I suppose) but if it puts a smile on your face or gives a feeling worth having then it has done its job.

I love the guitar and harmonica together... they are natural partners in a song.

I remember when you first arrived. It was a good day for the MacJams' community, indeed!

That is a harmonica played the old fashion way... ;)

Thanks for listening and leaving your thoughts, Bob.

OK, now I am getting hooked. On my third listen and I am now transported to a Santa Barbara bay area bar where together we weep of displaced loves and limericks. I am about to write a new song that keeps us in a melancholy, maudlin mood.

This song has a classic story and sound to it - perhaps you are channeling some of those timeless tunes you've been performing at the nursing home?

[ Reply to This ]
channeling.... &mdash 10/12/07 - 06:15:54 PM
... well, I may be channeling from the 'old folks' home' (I perform there next Saturday)... but it would only be, because I sing Willie Nelson's version of Georgia... I used to do Hank Williams' song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" (closer to the spirit of Lonely Nights, Lonely Songs) but stopped doing that one 'caused it is just too sad a story for those dear folks.

Always glad to see your Buddha-like image on one of my song pages.

Ricky Nelson... &mdash 10/12/07 - 09:11:57 PM
... boy, I use to watch Ozzie And Harriet as a kid and one of my favorite parts of the show (aside from when Wally would come into the kitchen, as he greeted Mrs. Nelson, and open the refrigerator to grab some food) was when at the end of the show they would play a clip of Ricky singing one of his hits. Nice, nice memory.

Take care, Bronco.

howdy &mdash 10/12/07 - 05:09:58 PM
Very delightful song Jack. The mood is very much as described by Roxylee and Vic:) Reminds me of my trip to your country some years ago. Visited some motels and bars driving in a rented Cadillac from O'Hare, Chicago to a little place in Wisconsin that I even don't remember the name of right now...:) That was one cool trip for a dude from Norway.. Your song brings along some of that American folk feeling. Very nice.

If I where to get a little technical... I'd say loose the drum pattern. It don't offer much help to the already good groove you have going there. And if you don't mind me saying, you have a kind of Bruce Springsteen thing going. The drums, with its repetitive machine like ways, kind of gets in the way for the warmth and goodness of your great singing and playing. I guess have a thing about those drum patterns... It makes you do your song on their premises, and not the other way around.

But.. I love the feel of this one Jack:)

from there to O'Hare... &mdash 10/13/07 - 01:50:41 PM
Thanks for the story about your visit to the mid-west. My wife just flew into O"Hare a couple days ago.

Country is indeed (along with jazz/R&B) an American thing... maybe more so with country. I wish there was a Country/Folk genre choice, as this does have (IMO) a folk element to it.

I agree... the drum track is a boring addition. I spend less time on drum choices (I have so little to choose from in my library) than anything. I like the idea of drums being in this song... as you would see in a live country band... but this loop doesn't add much, and as you said maybe detracts. Glad to know you enjoyed it...

Thanks for your thoughts thoddi... always welcome.

Gail, I am glad you found your way here to listen to this little country boy (wink) sing his sad (but not so sad) country song. I came up with this melody and intro lyrics almost two years ago and no matter which way I turned, I kept ending up out in the country.

There's a little bit of country in all of us, I guess.

Thanks.

This is cool Jack &mdash 10/13/07 - 07:41:03 PM
You've got some good lyrics here and the singing is really good too. You vocal comes through nice and strong, but the harmony parts are buried to far back in the mix for my taste. It also sounds to me like there was a timing issue on this as the song sound a little loose. That might be happening if your trying to play along with a background track from the keyboard, but I'm not sure how you put this together so I can't tell for sure.

Anyway, it's a really good song with tremendous potential, it just needs a little tweaking here and there to sort it all out. Please take my comments in the way they are given, in friendship and to help make a good song even better. Drop me a line and I'll do what ever I can to give you a hand, I really like what you've got going here

Respectfully, you new friend

Suffice to say... your comments are most welcomed and I can't argue a bit with your input. I threw this together rather quickly over a few hours last Thursday afternoon. Very demo-like, this recording is for sure. But it gets the heart of the song out there, which met my goal at this time. :)

Read my note. Your input is most welcome.

thanks...

Kinda country... &mdash 10/13/07 - 10:47:57 PM
A bit of mid-period Dylanistic folk, too...

The harmonica solo really adds a lot to this... If it was me, I'd lead the song off with a bit of that...

You're getting better and better at doubling your vocals, Jack. Right on the beat. A lot of people get everything 'smudgy' as they add voices. Nicely spread in the stereo field, too.

'Wishing I could sleep just to pass the time' is a great line, and someday I may have to steal it...

Country.... folk &mdash 10/15/07 - 01:19:41 PM
... that about sums up the feel of this one... you're right about that. I'd like to think this has threads of Dylan's "country" moment in the sixties, so I won't argue with you over that either.

I like the harp also. Not sure how to put in earlier. I'll have to look at that. I do think it helps the song a lot, though. I may have another version coming out with this and some other "upgrades"...

Glad to hear your comment on the vocals being together 'cause I did have to concentrate on keeping things tight when I was singing each of the back up vox.

Free feel to use the line... ;) I'm sure someone said long before I did.

Thanks Ed.

most enjoyable &mdash 10/15/07 - 01:48:04 PM
Jack,

I enjoyed this 3 beer mug tune,(not a rating, how many I'd be drinking). Reminded me of Gene Autry a bit, but most recently the flavor of a tune on Neil Young's Prarie Wind CD or his Heart of Gold movie(2005/2006)DVD called "Here for you". (Great concert DVD worth buyin).

This tune goes with my life right now which I'm hoping will have a positive outcome. I've got everything crossed that can be crossed.

Anyhow I'm crying wit cha.

Gene Autry... back in the Saddle again. Now there is an old timer. He sold a lot of records 50-60 years ago. Now Neil... nice to be mentioned in the same sentence with him (even if it's a stretch). I'll have to go back and listen to "Here For You." I love his country folk flavor songs.

We all get the rough times, the down times... some more than others, but all can relate. That's why sad story songs are so relate-able-to. Hope your story has a turn for the better and a good ending.

Thanks.

Country music is contagious if one starts listening to it. That being said.... it has been a while since I have given any attention to country, really not since the mid-eighties in Arizona when my radio dial was set to the local country station while setting tile.

Scott, I appreciate you stopping by. Thanks.

(and, yes, I too look forward to those times when my wife takes a trip so I can sit down and do some recording)
