Description:
I rewrote some of the lyrics and of course rerecorded the vocals.
I'm just hanging on to the tail end of a cold, and I probably should have waited another day or two to do this, but when inspiration calls you have to answer.
Lyrics:
Feel free to manipulat my words; to edit and change phrase shape or time.
I tried to convince you.
I swear to god I didn't think you'd mind.
I want the moon to swallow the sun.
You're used to me by now, I'm sure. Though I resurface as whomsoever I desire.
There's no way to know for sure, but through memory whether or not we're forgiven by cold desire.
I want the moon to swallow the sun.
Are you awake and dying to be consumed?
Where do you wait when you want to be led through?
I slip away, and wipe the defeat from the bottom of this room.
We find ourselves okay, in spite of never knowing what to do.
I want the moon to swallow...
Why won't the moon just swallow....
I wish the moon would swallow...
Why can't the moon just swallow the sun?

I have &mdash 10/12/07 - 07:21:24 PM
told you previously how much I love this song. I have listened to it many times and also mentioned it in a forum post. Because of this I am going to have to hear this version a few times to adjust to it - it's just that I love the original so much. Your voice is amazing on this.
Cheers

many thanks &mdash 10/12/07 - 07:26:36 PM
Sorry to throw you off. I hope in time you can swallow this one. I like the changes myself, but I know how it feels when you get used to a song, like a radio edit or something and then you buy the album and it's different. It can take a bit to get over it, but I usually find the changes hold their weight and integrity. I could be wrong though, I really have no idea what I'm doing with this whole music thing. haha.
Thanks for stopping by.-Rain [ Reply to This ]

great vocal delivery &mdash 10/12/07 - 10:46:36 PM
even with the cold. well you always have had a good voice. I like the starkness and intensity. the touch of delay on the voice adds a cool dimension. [ Reply to This ]

That's kind of what I need to hear, not that I'm fishing for compliments when I whine about my voice. I've never been happy with recorded vocals. On stage I'm fully confident, but I can never get it to shine on tape, or uh, software as the case may be.
I'm living in a new environment that allows me the freedom of letting go and singing like I want to for the first time in a few years, so even though my voice is a little tamed by the laboured breathing and such this is probably the first thing I've posted on here that I was really "Singing" when I recorded it.
Thanks for the confidence boost man. I appreciate it.

is very... um... PRESENT! Got right into my head hard and just about blew my scalp off! BIG guitar and about a 20 to 30 MS delay on the BIG vox... mighty fine stuff. No song has impressed me more on this fine site. [ Reply to This ]
Really??? &mdash 10/13/07 - 12:28:19 AM
Wow, that's a bold statement. I'm taking that one to the bank. hahaha.
The echo on the vox was a mistake at first. I accidentally had one of the tracks intended for guitar qued up, and as soon as I started singing I was hit with this really washy, wavy delay. I didn't question it. It's those little things you hear in an album that you know were unintentional, like an accidental string brush that fades into feedback that just couldn't have not been there, you know?
I'm totally glad to have made such a strong impression with this song. Thank you for the kind words, and for taking the time to stop by in the first place.
Peace,

just love those accidental discoveries... all of a sudden out of nowhere a certain sound occurs and you just say "whoa" and you know you got something special. [ Reply to This ]

it is essentialy an unplugged version of something, even if this is the state into which it was first born.
I'm glad it did something for your palette.
Thank you for stopping in, and for the blessings as well. Sometimes we all need them.

Nice doubling on the vox on that last chorus. When you first posted this, I took you at your word (in the first line of the lyrics) and put a mangled, edited, twisted download of it into one of my own songs (will post soon, I hope). That one was pretty desperate sounding; but this is downright abject! Nice clean mix, too. And I think you should always record vocals when you have a cold: it's a 50/50 shot you'll end up with either trash or transcendence! [ Reply to This ]
wallowing in abjection &mdash 10/19/07 - 09:21:05 AM
Thank you. As usual your comment means a lot to me.
I think songs like this are an excellent way for me to deal with shit. Obviously, despite my always sharp and fantastic sense of humour there's a sizeable portion of me with some legitimate depression and anger issues. When I play something like this I get to let it go; transcending any state of physical health.
It's one of those songs that are all consuming while I'm singing it. I have no idea what I sound like or if I'm singing the right words. I'm just using the song to get by, through, whatever. I have often thought, and commented that songs are endless. When you get one of those songs that writes itself, it's because it did. The music lies in wait until some humble song "writer" catches it and becomes it's vehicle. I'm wondering now however; if perhaps this is not the case. Maybe the song lives in you your whole life, until the very moment when you need it the most, and then it becomes your vehicle. some sort of crutch or pill to help you along your way.
Either that, or I'm way off and it turns out that music is just notes, and we pick them at random intervals to create audio tapestries of our own, but there is nothing more or deeper to it than that. the music has no energy or consciousness. It's only purpose is simply to exist.
I don't know. I'm gonna shut up and play my guitar.
I had almost forgotten about you using a piece of the original posting of this song. How's that coming? I'm anxious to hear it.
Catch you later,

Progressive Grunge &mdash 10/17/07 - 11:12:50 PM
When I hear your stuff I think of Rush in the composition and Soundgarden in the delivery. You get alot of mileage out of a few tracks, but for some reason I keep imagining layers of instrument being slowly added to an ear pouding climax. I guess That has been done. Good song. [ Reply to This ]
crescendo &mdash 10/18/07 - 01:54:50 PM
I used to write each song as if it was the last song on the album; trying to maximize the dynamic capabilities within it's range to make as striking of an impact as I could. Lately though, although still a total sucker for a good rise and release, I've come to terms with the fact that they don't all have to reach a point that makes you want to get up and scream or cry or throw something or just climb something really high. Sometimes it's okay for a song to ask you to just sit there and listen. This is what I'm learning.
As for the Soundgarden and Rush comparison combo, I couldn't be much more flattered. Regardless of the style or dynamcs I'm using in a particular song, I just want them to have a resonance of truth and passion, so that there is something being both represented and conveyed efficiently. I'm very glad to have struck a chord in you yet again. I thank you for your time and kindness. Much appreciated sir.
