Lyrics
Into The Sea

After the eve has fallen I watch for the witch in your eye
A star lights the road for the traveller but home is where the heart lies

Sail far my love for the ocean cries your name
But save a little salt of the earth for me
All vows we made will be written in the sand
Only to fade forever into eternity - Into the sea

Take all you want - it's worth nothing
My heart wont be sold by the pound
When all them young sailors roll in
You crawl like a rat through the town

Farewell bonny love - you wont be crying long
I ride the white horses struggling for to breathe
Kind words so bold will be written on the grave
Only to fade forever into eternity - Into the sea

Sail far my love for the ocean cries your name
But save a little salt of the earth for me
All vows we made will be written in the sand
Only to fade forever into eternity - Into the sea

Excellent song.....
Everything about this song is good.

I couldn't work out the Dylan Thomas allusion in the keywords but that's an aside.

The singing and musician work, along with the composition and arrangement were first class.

Take care.

Paul.

Dylan Thomas
Its a reference to the section on the original soundtrack read by Richard Burton where blind Captain Cat is sitting in the doorway trying to guess each passerby by the sound they make - the way they walk, the way they move. Then his mind wanders off when he hears Polly Garter and her youth reminds him of all his past loves and his favourite - Rosie - when he was a sailor on the see saw sea long long ago.She appears in his mind as a phantom and tells him that she is dissapearing into the dark of the darkest night and that she is forgetting him and she is forgetting that she was ever born.Yet he has her name tattooed on his arm and wishes he could have died in her bosom. Its incredibly sad and probably touches me more deeply as an artwork than any I have experienced because it approaches what I think is the basis of life in a way - collaboration.

kangaroos are very cool though,too

Thanks Sir Reinholt!

Timeless, eerie, beautiful!!
Has a timeless feel...love that British folk sound. Sounds contemporary, but like it could be from long long ago as well. There's kind of that eerie edge to it, too, that I always find appealing in the British folk tradition.

Production is jst right for this sort of piece. DL'd and Faved!

re
I'm a big fan of eery, and the ocean can be very that. There used to be a guy in Cornwall who believed in 'sea heads' and claimed to have a collection of these things he found washed up that were like human heads made from entwined seaweed but were rooted in the coral.Very weird indeed.Actually thats quite gruesome now I come to think of it.Thanks jp!

Lovely
You weave a beautiful picture with your many vocal layers. The instruments are a bit folksy but the vocals remind be of Renaissance, with Rebsie sounding like Annie Haslam :)

Thanks

Annie Haslam
I wasnt sure what Annie Haslam sounded like so I downloaded her version of Yes's 'Turn of The Century' - beautiful. What would be a good renaissance track to start off with? I've heard of them many times, but dont know any..

There's a lot of Bert Jansch...
...in your lead vocal on this, and a touch of Pentangle in the vocal interplay...

I think the mix is dramatically better over headphones. I first listened over speakers, and didn't much care for it. The vocals and the guitar didn't seem to be getting a working blend, but more fighting themselves. It was hard to hear the words clearly.

I came back to it later and listened over 'phones, and it sounded much better. At least for me, and over my system, the mix could use a bit of tweaking over speakers, so that it sounds good in a wider range of settings.

I'll have to go look up Under Milkwood now...

re
Thanks ed.Ahaha 'I didn't much care for it' is such a polite way of saying no thanks,I must remember that.Glad you came back tho - I must confess thats a side of things I suffer from a little - I actually prefer to mix things through speakers at quite high volumes but where I presently live thats not possible so I go through headphones - theres probably quite a huge difference in the way you hear things.

I must go and look up Bert Jansch

Thanks Richard!

It's a great song and it was fun to sing.

I didn't pick up on the Under Milk Wood reference until you mentioned it but it makes sense. When I was younger I used to listen to the Richard Burton recording while lying in complete darkness, just immersing myself in his voice and the sounds of the words. Quite magical. I never seem to have time to do things like that anymore.

re
Cheers Rebs.I remember bunking off from a factory job and walking across the sussex downs in the rain listening to Under Milkwood - its great stimulation for the imagination I find. But I should find time to read more.

I think another favourite picture from it is that bit about wondering through the apple orchards down to where the old man plays the harmonium to shell peas that fall into the lap of the world, something along those lines

Been listening over and over...
...absolutely bewitching. The vocal layers work so well together and the melody is very seductive (particularly those bits at the end of the couplets and when the harp comes in).

Nice work,

This is the dogs ..

..and I couldn't agree more with Stevel .. the vocals
really go well together: paddler lower down perhaps
than normal .. and those lovely harmonies from
Rebsie ..

.. the mix is perfect .. I would just perhaps EQ
the guitar a little brighter .. seems a little
'hand-strummed' dullness creeping in ..(which you
don't get with a pick)

.. perhaps you need some mandolin in this??.. might
work well with the harp .. save it for MJ UK 2008?

:o)

Kudos to y'all.

Oooo-
such deliciously rendered harmonies! The guitar is wondrous, too. The addition of harp makes it magical. I love the shifting major/minor tonality, and the way the chord progression on 'struggling for to breathe' worked, well, it was gorgeous! You two are great together. More Rebsie/Paddler collabs!!!

Well Woven Sadness
Really enjoyed the beautiful arrangement, the harmonies, male/female combination, though the sea was rather an enchanted, dreamlike space, rather than the briny of shanties and stinging salt?

Impressive (to me anyway)
