Description:
This is a song that I'd put together that was sort of going nowhere, and since I just got a dobro, I figured I would use it to practice on. This is pretty much one-take track of dobro over an overworked backing track.

Hardware:
Regal dobro, Harmony lap steel, Johnson mandolin, Epiphone bass, Guild acoustic, Kurzweil KME-61, funky little homemade amp, mics and computer

Software:
GB4, EZ Drummer

Love the Dobro sound... &mdash 10/13/07 - 10:23:49 AM
Jim... I was think dobro on my recent country tune...could have used you sitting in, pardna.

This is a nice, warm acoustic maiden voyage for that new instrument. You already sound like a pro on it.

What kind of Dobro did you get? I have been thinking about getting one on and off for a while. Now you got me thinking again.... cheers.

my dobro story &mdash 10/14/07 - 09:28:08 AM
I was on an errand for work on my birthday, and I passed by a music store called Daddy's Junky Music Store that I check from time to time for whatever new gear turns up; in addition to the usual lines of new gear, they have a steady influx of used stuff, since they are in the same block as Berklee School of Music. In the acoustic guitar room was this nice looking black Regal dobro with a price tag of $250 in almost new shape. Square neck, high nut, just setup for slide playing only. I have a lap steel, and at various times I used to have a Fender pedal steel, and a Guyatone double neck 8-string console steel, so I am used to playing with the bar, but I've never had anything that I could just pick up and play without plugging in, and this resonator sound was just sticking with me. I love Jerry Douglas' playing a lot. Figuring it was my birthday I picked up this Regal and started playing a couple of licks with the only thing I had on hand, which was a tape measure, and it sounded so sweet, I said, "I'll take it" and it turns out it was labelled incorrectly and it was only $175 according to their computer. So it was indeed a lucky day. I did get a parking ticket though, which negated the discount, but still I feel pretty lucky.

Dispite it... &mdash 10/13/07 - 11:51:50 AM
being a tad repetative and a few rough spots on the new dobro this was a very enjoyable song.Love the laidback vibe and easy going backup insturmental work. You have a wonderful ability to sound almost like a seasoned veteran with the new dobro and look forward to some more.

Blessings,

way cool &mdash 10/13/07 - 07:23:37 PM
Great playin all the way. I really liked that lap steel. Quite the impressive mesh of stringed goodness. Caught those tasty piano riffs as well. I hear Kelli's voice on this in the future!

thanks! &mdash 10/14/07 - 09:42:53 AM
I first did an ambient electric lap steel part that pans back and forth, so maybe you mean that part, and I really like how that turned out. The dobro part on top of that has a few mistakes in it, but I didn't spend too much time on it. This was started as a song for Kelli to put her lyrics and vocals onto, but when we tried to put it together, we agreed that the sum was somewhat less than the parts and that we were going to have to try a new direction for that song, and this bit of music ended up sort of orphaned for now. So I figured I would use it for something. If someone (and who knows, it might be Kelli) wanted to sing over it, it would be fine with me, it is constructed to be sung over, but for now I just wanted to throw it out there.
Being a super keyboard player yourself, I am very flattered by your compliments on the piano playing. Thanks a lot!

Nice one.. &mdash 10/14/07 - 02:38:08 AM
..great sounding instument you've got there - even makes the odd duff note sound ok :-)

I really like some of the little piano runs in the backing track - are they you or samples or pens? Cool, whatever...

More please....

Thanks, Phil! &mdash 10/14/07 - 09:16:40 AM
The piano is me playing my Kurzweil as a midi controller with the GB Steinway piano software instrument. I usually perform my keyboard parts this way, so I can correct the odd duff note that pops in here and there, especially since I'm pretty much self-taught as a keyboard player. I don't like pencilling all that much since I can't get the timing to sound natural, and I like leaving the little off-time stuff in there. I figure that if it doesn't have some mistakes, then it wouldn't sound like me.

I enjoyed this Dobro playing very much. A sure D/L:) You have you're own sound and feel in the things you do Jim, and you always make music. By that I mean that you're beyond the technique, and manage to concentrate on getting the feeling through. Always very pro playing and production:)

For some reason this sounds to me like The Greatful Dead unplugged. If I listen closely I can hear Jerry Garcia singing way out in the background. Perhaps Im having a flashback :)
