Description:
Its a schoolboy song re-recorded about a gypsy fella who lived down a country lane near where we lived. He had a battered old white caravan but next to it was his old wooden one from his youth. His dog always attacked you - well it never caught us but it didn't look friendly.

Lyrics:
Old Joe Boney

Old Joe Boney is a funny old man
He lives in a field in a caravan
Pipe in his mouth and a drop o whiskey
Thats Old Joe Boney

Old Joe Boney never worked for a living
But he never stops a dancing and a singing
How he gets by I'll never know
But thats Old Joe Boney

He gives to the poor
Knock on his door
- He'll come a rollin if you ask for more
1 for me - 1 for you
Devil get a runnin or he'll get you too
I dont know how he gets by but thats old Joe Boney

Well am the traveller of night and day
I poison the earth and burn the hay
Noones ever gonna stand in the way
Of Old Joe Boney

Thanks Feter - Its also on the silly side methinks. Its the kind of song I'd have alot of fun making a video to in a slightly primus way, probably, with some rather far-out type hat.

Mountains &mdash 10/15/07 - 06:53:07 PM
Sounds like something song by mountain men! Very energetic. Last verse is a bit enigmatic.

Thanks

accordion &mdash 10/15/07 - 07:59:14 PM
Pad,
I can always count on you to stretch my mind a little. The accordion and capo'ed guitar (?), mandolin (?), very fun and hoopin' made me want to get up a do a lil' jig! And I ain't usually the jiggin' type. I also dug the low key vox, nicely mixed. I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and knew quite a few of the Boney kind. You nailed it....glad the dog never got you, otherwise we'd never have this little gem.

Philip

Funny now you mention Louisville I just noticed that I begin singing in an english accent that suddenly turns a bit pseudo-american.Never having been out of england,I've only seen the kind of Boney i think your talking about on films and read about in Bill Bryson books. We are such a small country and there used to be alot more people and romany gypsies living unconventionally but that was all clamped down on with the 'criminal justice bill' about 15 years ago when most of student youth took to the idea of living in trucks and they kind of ruined everything for the genuine travellers for whom its in the blood and a respectful way of life while the students on the whole got a bad reputation with drugs and raves n damage to land.Since then its been technically illegal to have a gathering of more than 12 people unless you get permission.I got round anyways by living unconventionally solo.Infact at one point I realised I was leading the very life i'd written this song about 10 years earlier. Thanks very much Phil - its appreciated

re &mdash 10/15/07 - 10:05:33 PM
oh yeah - the guitar is standard tuning and its a russian balalaika.I'm not much of a guitar player - just rhythm really, and i wasn't sure about that distortion on a semi-accoustic I'm sure alot of guitarists would say that sound is just terrible!

pleased you returned here. The songs you have posted lately are so diverse and yet every one of them a great listen.
I love this - so unusual and foot tapping rhythmic. Fun lyrics, superb vocals and real musicianship. Impressive.

a wonderful range of sounds and textures. The accordian was excellent.

The almost spoken vocal delivery really works.

Simply a very good song :-)

Acoustically driven... &mdash 10/16/07 - 09:55:40 AM
...love the uke at the end (that's what it is, right?) and the guits, of course. Harmonium's a nice "binding force". Tune moves.

Sounds like an interesting guy...we had a guy in our town like that. Called him "Cowman" because he basically lived in the middle of a big ol' cowfield. Always dressed in filthy clothes, though he never worked. Turns out he owned 100s of acres of land which he sold most of and made a fortune.

Cowman.

His dog was friendly.

thanks guitapick - that sounds like the guy, seems every town has one.Thats classic - shoddy clothes, millionaire. We had a guy who used to appear at the bottom of our garden on a sunday - he'd just start looking in your shed and you'd think he was gonna rob yer, then he'd come out with a pair of shears and start sharpening them.Just when he thought he was gonna chop your head off with a pair of shears,he'd come up and say in a weird lilt - 'you gonna give me a lil somethin for that then?' and grin - he had gold teeth!

its a balalaika by the way i just okayed it like a uke,its russian

I went to a show at the school I work at last night and there was father and son performing some songs from the deep south on fiddle and something like a mandolin. To be honest If I could play half as well as they did I'd be exultant - the rythms and ambiences were just exquisite and you took you somwhere else spiritually - absolutely fascinated with hillbilly songs. Thanks scott

yes - every sunday I used to get on my bmx and go cycling down the country lanes and down one in particular just in the hope that I'd catch a glimpse of this guy.You used to find sticks and feathers placed in remote parts of the woodland (if you can call it remote in the West Midlands near Dudley (jon bonham/ozzy) left by the romanies to signify different things eg. 'dont go this way' or 'i was here' and such like

First song I've listened to of yours and am very impressed. One of those I'll file under 'you could learn something from this fella'. Loved the production - low key but interesting all the way trough. Good playing and a nice mix of instruments. And the low-down vocal is fab!

Great... &mdash 10/20/07 - 02:10:11 PM
...driving folk song with a wonderful character. As a boy in Philly we lived on the edge of the urbanscape. Some ramshackle dwellings still survived just beyond the row houses. In one lived "the hermit," or so we neighborhood boys dubbed him. Hadn't thought of him in decades until I heard your song. Reminds me of the last verse in Morrison's "And it stoned me."

We saw the man from across the road with the sunshine in his eye Well he lived all alone in his own little home with a great big gallon jar There were bottles too one for me and you and he said Hey there you are.

Beverly &mdash 10/20/07 - 07:37:00 PM
Sort of "The Beverly Hillbillies" on steroids! Also reminds me of the old folk song, Old Joe Clark.

This is real different from most MacJams tracks, and that's a treat. Guitars are just fantastic. Sounds like real harmonica (or concertina?). If it's not, it'll do! And do I hear a mandolin?

Love the little vocal breaks in the middle of the instrumental solo. Great idea!

This track would be great for the sequel of "Brother, Where Art Thou?"
