Description:
After my recent troubles, I had to make myself sit and write a song even though I'd lost heart. Maybe that's why the song has a strong melancholic feel, reflecting how I've been feeling. For some reason it has a strong French sound, so I added the accordion to enhance that flavour. I hope you like it ...
Lyrics:
intro:Spoken
It's quite a while since you went away,
Though I often feel you're still around.
I sense you close at certain times of year,
Now the time has come when I know you're here.
Verse:
Another golden Autumn, another summer gone,
And while the leaves are falling, the mem'ries linger on.
I sit here in the garden taking in the last warm rays,
And though my eyes are heavy, I can almost see your face.
Bridge:
You're just a memory, imprinted in my mind,
That's all that I have left now, to warm my heart.
Verse:
The trees of red and gold, will soon be cold and bare,
Even when the snows have come, I still will know you're there.
Your glow will fill my memory,
until the end of time,
But Autumn is so special, it's the time I made you mine.
Break:
Bridge:
Are you a memory imprinted in my mind?
If you are, that's all I have now (that's all I have),
To warm my heart.
Verse:
The leaves are like the memories, They fade and fall and die,
'Though a few will last forever,
They're the ones of you and I...
But it's another Golden Autumn,
Another summer gone,
And while the leaves are falling,
My mem'ries linger on... my mem'ries linger o-o-o-o-n.

to see you're back - hope all is well after your recent troubles.
I always like songs tinged with melancholy - and songs with seasons - so you have a winning formula for me here. A nice arrangement with well chosen intruments.
My favourite song of yours to date...

really nice of you Peter... and yes I'm much better in myself so to speak and 'The Show Must go On 'LOL as they say, though I wondered if this might be a little toooo melancholic, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Shades of Paris my friend &mdash 10/16/07 - 07:10:27 PM
A beautiful song rich in feelings and sounds that envelop you in the spirit of a lost love. You can feel the vocal right down into your soul on this.
This is outstanding Maurice my friend, outstanding. I notice not only a French flare to the song, but a little touch of a middle eastern strain running through it as well. The accordion is a nice touch and works perfectly, but I noticed that the bass line is either missing, or so low in the mix as to seem so. You might want to do a remix and bring the bass up to help drive the song along. But that's just my thought.
All and all a beautiful, emotion filled work Maurice. Bravo my friend

Ed, After your last song that you posted I thought you might like this one. You're right in thinking there's no bass and the reason is that I'm not brilliant on playing/adding bass (I need a Bassist LOL), but I did think that with the gling-glong synth, that a bass might just confuse the issue, but then again.... Anyway thanks for all the nice comments and glad you thought the vocal was ok, as I had to do it a few times, seeing that my vocal chords have developed a life of their own lately, cheers M [ Reply to This ]
Melancholy &mdash 10/16/07 - 08:34:27 PM
Well sung. The French treatment complete with accordion provides a kind of melancholy you don't hear in other styles.
Thanks

Yes the accordian, like a violin can be very expressive of longing, yearning and melancholy, probably because it's a wailing sound (which I love) and I milked that in the instrumental part to get that effect, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Very good &mdash 10/16/07 - 09:54:22 PM
One of your best I think Mo - very good indeed. Sounds almost classic - straight off an old Sinatra album or something (or Dean or whoever!)
I agree with Sloparts that it needs a bass section, so I'd definitely think about remixing.
But it's just a good song which stands on its own.
Cheers,

Hi Phil, &mdash 10/17/07 - 05:35:37 AM
I'm very appreciative of your nice comments on this and love the compliments. I'm thinking about the bass.... but wondering if the empty sound I've acheived suits the 'loneliness' factor in the sentiment. I'll have a bash sometime, but as I said before I'm no bassist, cheers M [ Reply to This ]

Moving &mdash 10/17/07 - 01:51:44 AM
Inimitable style - lovely vocaks moving melodies - there are those who dont like the accordian but I owe alot to the instrumnet as it has kept me alive on many an occasion busking and hopefully given the public something to smile about.I would quite like to have heard a bass line on the track, but in this case its quite nice that the chords and melodies are aloof as are the many coloured leaves of Autumn blowing around the lanes at the moment.

Hi Paddler &mdash 10/17/07 - 06:02:59 AM
Glad you called and liked this and am amazed that you were a busker. I wouldn't have been able to do that I don't think, though I have done some strange venues in my time. I found that most people here seem to like accordian, so I'm pleased about that. I like your expression about the backing being 'aloof', that's perfect, Regards M [ Reply to This ]

Glad you're back in the saddle Maurice. The spoken intro reminds me of the Moody Blues. This does indeed have a rather melancholy melody, but it's quite beautiful. The accordian is a nice touch. Lovely lyrics and, to my ears, your best vocal delivery to date my friend! Bravo and encore!

Gallic Groove. &mdash 10/18/07 - 06:37:50 AM
La Francais vibe c'est tres jolie et j'aime la. Kinda reminds me of Serge Gainsborough. If this was my tune I'd have sung it an octave down to give it that 200 Gauloises a day authentic tar blasted resonance. Mais le chanson c'est beau, avoir de la chance Maurice. [ Reply to This ]

...and that that's about the limit of my French... so I went on line to translate and I'm glad you think it's 'beautiful'. You are the clever one being able to speak French.. Kudos for that. Regarding the octaves; at a younger stage of my life I would have been able to choose from the very good vocal range I had and maybe sing it Falsetto even, but as a septuagenarian, I don't have the luxury of choice anymore LOL, cheers M [ Reply to This ]

The combination of the spoken parts and the sung parts is perfect ... perfect. It adds a dimension to this that just a the beautiful melody alone would not have.

sexy gipsy like tune &mdash 10/19/07 - 03:48:35 PM
What you did to the vocals at the intro sounded very nice. What was that Fx? (Don't tell)...hmmmm an EQ with lows and highs cut-off? I like the accordion. Your skills are very solid. I like the tremolo in your voice. The lyrics are quite sad though. Hmmm. Good thing. Hope new n good memories fill that brain of yours (referring to that ordeal with your windows...). While playing this tune, I thought: If I had a girl, which I....I would drink wine with her. And tell her she has pretty eyes.
Ciao ciao!

Hi there JB &mdash 10/19/07 - 04:15:18 PM
I hadn't thought of it as Gypsy-ish, but I know what you mean. Yes, with regards to the Opening spoken vocal (which is the same setting as the sung part), I did manipulate the GB EQ and added reverb with the slider at the bottom. I have to use EQ to try to get a decent volume and clarity. Glad you like the vocals, but you know, I don't seem to hear my own vibrato, though others have mentioned it too LOL, so thank you for the nice encouraging words. If you want a girl, I hope you find one soon... and maybe write a song about drinking wine and telling her she has 'pretty eyes'. regards M [ Reply to This ]

Yes - &mdash 10/21/07 - 10:10:35 PM
Very melancholy. Exactly the way I'm feeling right now. the picture is beautiful, by the way. The symbolism of autumn turning to winter is used in so many songs, and it still evokes a strong sense of loss in me. The accordian is an excellent accompaniment instrument for this song. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you ... &mdash 10/22/07 - 04:19:11 AM
Krystyjo, Glad you called and listened. Yes you're right about Autiumn and Winter... it can be a melancho;y time for lot's of people, myself included. But I think it's because it seems like a time when everything closes down and we can't see what will come the following year. My way of coping (and if you want symbolism.. I'm in the Atumn of my life and it can get scary believe me) is to breath deeply and go for walks at a nice pace. It's well known practice for combatting depression. Hope you can chase the blues away real soon , regards M [ Reply to This ]

Classic Mo! &mdash 10/22/07 - 02:00:41 PM
As has been already said 'a French vibe' - Are you the Aznavour Anglais? LOL! Melancholy....mmmmm?, not as much as it could have been, as the drum tempo is fairly upbeat and to me that's what stops the whole song from being out and out sad; to a song that demands to be listened to because there is that unusual timing of the backbeat against your fantastic 'club' voice (and in this case an after-hours-club in downtown Paris, not Oldham!)
Great imagary in your lyrics and a fine choice of instrumentation. You are sooo back in the saddle! I though you were going to go even higher at the end, but one must make allowances, LOL!
Downloaded to the 'Classic Mo' playlist, tee hee!!
All the best,
Jim [ Reply to This ]
Hi Jim.. &mdash 10/22/07 - 03:22:59 PM
Yes I wanted the drumbeat quite heavy to carry it all forwards and give it a more 'Pop' sort of sound. I searched for ages for a sound on the synths and the one I kept there came almost by a lucky accident. It gives the kind of clanging French Church bell feel I wanted, as if tolling for the past memories. With regard to the voice; it's the only one I've got left LOL and I couldn't get much higher at the end, because I was already stood on my toes on a chair to reach that falsetto note LOL. Thanks for calling round Jim cheers and all the best M [ Reply to This ]
