Description:
I have been experimenting with recording my band as a trio, live in our rehearsal space. For this recording, all amps and drum kit were miced with SM57's, and run into two behringer mixers. I can only add eq and compression, I can't truly "mix" this way. So this is a TOTALLY live one take no overdub jam from our afternoon session today.
I need to add a multitrack recording capability to GB, I am just not sure how. Maybe someone knows what piece of gear makes this possible, if indeed it is possible.
So this is a blues in c minor we improvised today. I send it out to my bandmates, Bryan and Fran Bishop...i love playing music with these guys. We never play anything quite exactly the same way twice, and I friggen love that...when we fall on our faces, which sometimes happens, we really look foolish, but when we get all in line and in the pocket, we have a very nice time of it. And they are the nicest people on the planet.
We are playing two shows around the Boston area very soon....Thursday October 25 at Gilrein's in Worcester, and 2 shows on Saturday night, Nov 3rd at the Acton Jazz cafe, in Acton(about 20 minutes west of Boston). We will Have the great Cliff Spencer with us on Hammond B3, and Scott Bronnes on Vocals and harp.
I am interested to hear how this sounds thru your gear.
Peace to all.

Sound &mdash 10/16/07 - 08:45:20 PM
The sound is good through my speakers, except maybe the guitar seems a bit muted compared to the drum and bass. Playing is vintage :) Excellent Jamming.
Thanks

sounding good &mdash 10/17/07 - 11:43:21 AM
Very clean recording. Those 58's do a good job. Have you tried the SM57 for more directional purposes like snare and kick? Even the guitar amp sounds great through a SM57. The SM58 tend to pick up much more of the surroundings than a 57 will. But then again I guess you will capture more of the ambience and mood with the ones you've used.
Your band seems to have a great time playing together. And its nice to hear how you dig into that guitar at some places here. You're a very good blues guitarist with your own sound Ziti:)
I used to have a trio blues band before. We tried to start it up again after some years, but that didn't last long... getting older also means getting busier for us... I have an recording from the old times done on a Revox tape recorder with two tracks in one take. The recorder was in a bad state, and the tape was re-used several times. So the recording is a bit odd in the Eq department. But we used SM57's mostly and 58 on the vocal. It's blues and a cover song, so it's not on macjams, but on the (dead) bands pages. You can find it here if you'd like to compare the recordings:

We had a little help from a friend who played the organ (the instrument) on this. [ Reply to This ]
ah...my typo thoddi &mdash 10/17/07 - 12:02:57 PM
they are sm 57s...typed it wrong!
thanks for the kind words as always...this kind of recording used to be called a "torture tape"...a home recording of a rehearsal you would force your friends to listen too. Thank god the quality of the recordings have improved over the years, so now, it is not so much of a torture. It is so very hard to record this way...everyone needs to play well (perfectly actually), and all the gear needs to be set right. In a trio, there is NO space to hide, and in recording a trio live, you need to have the planets in alignment....
It gives you so much respect to all the older recording artists....Go listen to a Spike Jones record...then imagine that that was recorded LIVE! and just marvel at the skills those guys possesed....
thanks for taking the time to listen thor

I really like your tremolo technique, reminds me of Jeff Beck. Nice slow blues jam. The mix sounds fine to me, Nice tune for crusin down the road at night. Sweet riffs as usual. [ Reply to This ]

I kept waiting &mdash 10/17/07 - 06:01:07 PM
for Robert Plant to scream.. Since I've been Loving You!Your playing is fantastic.Just perfect phrasing.Doesn't sound like the hundreds of Stevie Ray clones I have heard. You have a distinct style of your own.The way you use the whammy bar is very cool.It stays in tune amazingly well. It's not a locking nut is it?
Your guitar tone is beautiful. What kind of amp are you using?
Awesome. [ Reply to This ]
i really love stevie &mdash 10/17/07 - 08:57:24 PM
but there are now about 12,780 stevies....some as young as 12.
I have been trying to sound like myself, and i think I found my sound the same way stevie found his....by mushing together all his favorites, albert, jimi, and freddie king to find his own sound....maybe I'm a combination of peter green, bb king, jeff beck and duane allman. i hear those guys in me...mybe some clapton and santana too...but it is a life long process defining your own sound, unless you are a one and a million Jaco type dude.
Playing blues, to me, is still the hardest style of music that i play. and the ONLY style that makes me go to the "happy place" while I am playing. It is the only style I feel like I am speaking in my voice. All the other styles I play, are fun and rewarding and sometimes profitable, but the only one that makes me soar is blues. It is 100% me. I avoid playing any popular blues in my shows...I dont do any stevie, or clapton. Cuz i just dont wanna go there. I got asked to join a clapton tribute band that is making a fortune...but meh. I LOVE eric clapton....as a 12 year old, he changed my life forever. But I dont want to sound like him. When I heard Sleepy Time Time by cream....then Spoonful, and i heard an interview with eric clapton and he talked about blues....i went right out and found all the music he talked about, bb, albert, hubert sumlin, fedddie king....they all sounded so great to me...so individual...so I knew early on that it was going to take me a while to figure out how to make a distinct sound that fit within the boundries of the music i loved.
as far as amps...this is a mid 60's Ampeg Reverbrocket with a vintage Altec Lansing speaker I bought in highschool. It has never been reconed or anything. An amp repair guy just rebuilt it and begged me not to change the speaker, insisting it was not blown in any way...glad i listened to him. I am using a Line 6 Pod as a tone shaper...I have the settings on the Pod emulating a fender twin. This recording, and others from the session yesterday are coming very close to the sound I hear in my head. Should have it any day now. Of course I been saying that for 37 years now....
glad you enjoyed the piece...looking forward to meeting you. Hope you can make my show at the acton jazz cafe!

I still do the trio &mdash 10/20/07 - 08:54:35 AM
I still do the trio blues thing from time to time. I have family in the Boston area. I need to get out there. I have 2 reasons now...family and see you and your band!!! nice song. Although Id like to hear more bass. I understand that less is more in that area. But still just a few more notes would be nice. Id like to play my stand up bass on this one someday.
Great guitar tone!!! not to mention the licks that are going on!!! [ Reply to This ]
Warm Recording &mdash 10/21/07 - 01:55:21 AM
Better than your average basement rehearsal tape, for sure. ;)
Yeh, like McBoy said, a stereo widener, or maybe a harmonic exciter, with careful attention to frequency bands, would give the mix more presence.
I've worked with SM57s for many years and they are really most efficient at capturing the crispest highs, which is why the cymbal ride sticks out in the mix.
Re multitrack capabilities in GB, I'm not clear on the question. I believe GB has a limit of eight simultaneous tracks (if your computer can handle them).
If you're talking about an interface that will handle numerous live inputs and feed them to individual GB tracks, there are probably a variety of options... but I don't imagine any of them are inexpensive.
I use a MOTU828mkII FW interface ($750 street), which offers 12 balanced TRS analog inputs and another 10 inputs for optical and/or digital sources. So, reportedly, you *COULD* record 22 discrete tracks at once.
But I don't believe I've ever needed more than a couple tracks at once, using the two front-panel combination Mic/Guitar inputs, so I'm short on experience with the eight rear-panel analog inputs, which are *line-level* ins.
So, if those Behringer mixers you're using have individual outputs for each input, I believe you could pipe them into the 828's rear inputs.
But you might want to give the MOTU tech people a call, first. I've found them to be friendly and helpful. And they are located in Cambridge, so perhaps even a local call for you. ;)

thank you &mdash 10/21/07 - 12:35:18 PM
for the most warming compliment...i truly appreciate the positive feedback this recording is getting, because it is a very raw and intimate statement for sure...this band is very improvisational...all our arrangements are very fluid so any tune can become a long jam if we are having fun...to me that is the main thrill of playing
thanks again!
