Description:
Back in April of 2006 I posted 'longing,' which can be found here:

http://www.macjams.com/song/20145

It is the last part of this song, which at the time I thought was pretty experimental--for me, anyway.
Since then, I've done quite a few experimental pieces, so here is the complete piece (which includes 'longing').

At some point, I may experiment more with the effects on the voice, but for now, here it is in all its dissonance!

I've put it under 'Experimental' though it's really more of a modern classical. But, as the vocals are heavily affected, I've left it at Experimental.

Lyrics:

and when i thought all sorrow had gone,
i looked upward into the endless blue--
and there i found such longing,
that the clouds could not help but gather.
and the rain did fall...
did fall...

and was it dispelled?
the writhing shadows of my fate and doubt?

can i ever break those chains of fear?
and thus, realizing my freedom,
can i give light
give light?

and be free....

That voice is really sensational. I love those 'experimental' effects.... so original and descriptive of a kind of 'out-of-body' for me. That 'dissonance' is wonderful. I can't think how you went about arranging/putting this together... but it works so well. Really haunting and emotional. It sounds like a soul that has escaped and floats free; the piano parts are just right too. Wonderful, M

Echo and delay certainly helps in that respect!

As per my usual, this was improvisation. I recorded the piano first, and when I was done, I didnt have any idea of what i'd do with it, as it was so different from my usual.
I came back to it later, listened to it once through and then improvised the vocal track.
I then set delay on the vocal track to give it a solitary, haunting contrast against the more 'grounding' piano.

What a lovely work! I get a sense of mists, billowing light and dark across a marshland full of the soft shapes of fog shrouded trees, their reflections in nearly still pools. The vocal quality is spot on for this kind of piece, and the echoed layering reminds me of some of Anuna's more avant-garde works.

Superbly draws me in completely and utterly as the voices play against the minimalist piano. Fresh, and beautiful, with great production.

Thanks so very much!
Keep well,
Doug

I love your description of this, and this is precisely one of the reasons I create music--to create images and a visual sense from soundscapes. So it's great when a listener can do the same

In classical music, I was always a fan of Program Music and tone painting, and then I followed closely the soundtrack composers and their music.
That connection of sound to imagery is probably present in much of my music.

Thanks, again, for taking time to share your impressions here and leaving a comment :)

Neo-classical &mdash 10/20/07 - 04:26:02 PM
....yes. Which is so NOT what I usually do. But I was feeling rather 'minimalist' at the time of this piano improvisation. And it's nice to do something apart from the 'usual!'

Thank you for commenting, and listening. Glad you enjoyed this piece, Feter. :)

very niice. you are right in that it could fall under the modern classical genre, but all of the effects definitely place it into experimental (ala Diamand Galas). This is a tremendous piece of work that you've done. Maybe I have developed such a fondness for dissonance that I don't even notice it anymore, this sounds totally beautiful and accessible to my ears. great job.

you know &mdash 10/18/07 - 05:30:41 PM
I have been listening to this (over and over again), and i think it's imperative that I make sure you know how truly amazing this is. i wish it went on about twice as long. while listening i was sitting on my couch in the sun (although it's cold here right now), sipping an espresso, and I just couldn't have been in a better place. outstanding.

...these comments are humbling (in a good way :)

Thank you so much! As I mentioned in another comment above, this is reallllly different from my usual. I probably would have hated music like this back when i was in my classical-listening-frenzy years as a teenager, but it's funny how you are more open to new things as you get older (or...maybe I'm backwards that way?? lol)

At any rate, I was hoping that, at 9:05, this song would not be too long and tire the listener. Nice to know that someone actually wanted more.

I appreciate the comments and knowing that you enjoy this piece so much. :)

Excellent mix..... &mdash 10/19/07 - 12:00:00 PM
The piano reminded me of both Japanese or oriental music (for those plays) and something like some of the music from 'Eyes Wide Shut', the last Kubrik film.

It doesn't detract or mean anything negative to me, it was just my first impression of the intro, and then further along in the mix.

Plus......The song is very captivating.

Excellent all around.

Take care.

Paul.
