Description:
Don't you just feel like this sometimes?? Ah .. and it was then I noticed my lyrics had become obsolete ...
some obsolete English words used in this song, with definitions :o)

.. it's been a hard darg .. and I am forswunk .. ;o)

This was an old song idea I had .. that used to be called "Stuff" and had some different lyrics...but at MJ UK ..
it came apon me the idea to deliberately use some 'expired' English words in some lyrics.. just for the hell of it... and annoy
the dictionary makers... lol...
and so, "waxing lyrical" was born.

Lyrics:
I musn't grumble,
If I am a drumble,
An' I moffle through the days.
Girn at the smekers,
An' eldening feckers,
Waxing lyrical.

Yeah

You get to know,
Blatant brava-doh! ;o),
And dwine in an endless sloom.
Ostentatiously trivial,
Waxing lyrical

Yeah

i catchy, gave me a very happy feeling in my very depths ! great mix and vocals were great but the song was just a little short for me, a really nice synth solo would be very nice in there

.. glad it made you feel that way .. I agree with you on
the length - will be completed later .. a synth solo? Hmm ..
not a bad idea ..I do need a bridge first .. I'd need to
call in some assistance for a synth solo .. or I'll be
forever with the pencil tool... lol.

with hearing a song in languages you don't
understand .. but with your native tongue...

You convinced me to purchase these 'drums on demand' samples. Wow, that rocks. But the whole production is so brilliant that I had to listen twice and a third time while writing this comment. I'm into a rock song myself... midi guitars of course. Could I possibly ask your help?

This has Hit... &mdash 10/21/07 - 05:59:50 PM
... written all over it. I has the rhythm/beat, a great performance on the guitar music sound bed... and your vocals do grab me as I listen. I dig the lyrics... and those background synth-style flourishes. Ah... but give me more. It is too short. A bridge maybe?... and then back to the meat and potatoes.

Kudos mate.

Thanks Jack .. &mdash 10/22/07 - 07:42:03 AM
.. "take it to the bridge!" .;o) .. yup .. it needs one ..
I have a few other small ideas now for this...

I decided to use that 'right-hand palmed artificial harmonic' thang again in this .. as it seemed to go down well in other
posts: my own "take me down easy" and the multi-collab "release me" by Estella.

Perhaps I'm starting to 'formula' write .. oh dear ..:o)

Explicit! &mdash 10/21/07 - 06:51:20 PM
Alan, you're a very literary guy; very punny, and I think you could have given Peter Hammill a run for his money, if you'd been born 15 years earlier. This is a brilliant idea, very well executed, and of course the icing on the cake is the 'Explicit' rating for 'feckers'. Well done.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks SJ .. &mdash 10/22/07 - 07:24:26 AM
.. I have been refered to as puny and idiotmatic .. but
that was by my x wife ;o)

I hadn't heard of Peter Hammill and Van Der Graaf Generator before .. I'm giving some of the
iTunes extracts a listen ..from their 2005 album "Present"...
he now sounds a bit like our rschletty, don't you think?

The older popular "theme one", "house with no door", "afterwards", "refugees" and "cat's eye" I like... the
latter sounding a bit like "The Sweet". Which album
would you recommend? "The Quiet Zone"?

[ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 10/22/07 - 11:11:43 AM
I'm partial to Still Life myself, although Godbluff is really good, too. For Peter Hammill's solo stuff, I highly recommend The Love Songs, if you can find it. IMHO the quality/energy of his songwriting degenerated markedly after 1990, so tread carefully (especially with recordings on his label, Fie!)
Are you a Divine Comedy fan, by any chance? Neil Hannon owes a huge debt to Peter Hammill.......

[ Reply to This ]
Neil Hannon .. &mdash 10/22/07 - 11:56:43 AM
.. I do like some of his great successes: "Frog princess",
"something for the weekend" .. but I would have to say I'm
a fan for the song "If I were you (I'd be through with me)"
.. how can anyone resist that after 3:55 .. the lyrics:

"You see if I were you,
I'd end my days,
In a field of stupid sheep,
Just grazing the grass,
So succulent and sweet"

..and of course "My lovely horse" from the TV show "Father Ted" :o)

I'll check out more Peter Hammill, ty for the info. Be
cool.

it effervesces &mdash 10/21/07 - 10:56:54 PM
it is professional. the guitar playing and singing are dextrous. it is a successful etymological experiment. it created an upward curl of the orating orifice. 0x0

[ Reply to This ]
er .. thanks! &mdash 10/22/07 - 07:50:37 AM
.. as did your reply :o)

Glad you mentioned the effervescing .. the intro and outro
was literally inspired by a couple of dissolving head-ache tablets...I think I will really record some and add that in along side in the mix (for later version)... might cheat with Andrews liver salts .. since it makes much more noise :o)

Good to start bubbly and lively I find ..

feckin' tight &mdash 10/22/07 - 12:43:20 AM
Number one, amazing mix, I aspire to your level of clarity and balance. Two, the lyrics are inspired, funny and gorgeously sung. The second "yeah!" with the harmony, is so tasty. And third, the guitars are totally, well, feckin' tight. The compression is so transparent, good job. Fourth, great arrangement, poppy, catchy, comes in, makes it's point and gets the hell out. Cool. One dig ol' download here.

..pfft .. your a far better mixer .. I got lucky ... and
Ozone 3 really works for me .. or seems to do the trick
on my 'base' mixes :o)

This is just the preset "CD mastering with Exciter and
widening".

I don't pretend to have known those words before (of course).. it was the idea, to activatively seek them out .. and try writing them into the idea/concept of the song ..

D'you know .. I once met some girls at a party in Oxford ..
and they worked for a dictionary .. I went "ooh" and I asked them which one .. they said "the Oxford one" .. *doh* ..
smooth huh? hahahah ...revenge .. mwahaha .. try making
it so concise now!! ;o)

.. at the time I originally came up with this song ..would
be '96/'97 ..I was really trying to write 'catchy' songs for
the band I was in... I think only the drummer liked this
one... but now I have more tools/skills to 'present' it a
bit better - so it's fun to re-do some of these past ideas.

.. glad you liked the opening line .. I too have a fondness
for that phrase .. handy it rhymes with drumble too .. and
far from obsolete yet I hope ;o)

I do feel I'm learning and getting better with production ..
was pleasantly surprised and relieved about the vocals .. since this was the last thing I recorded literally before I came down with a fever and sore-throat .. a little croaky.
Still .. there is loads of better singers out there that
could do a much better job of singing this I feel, I hope...lol.

Yeah this definately falls under the pop category. I've listened to this jam 3 times and still have no idea what its about. Sounds happy though (which is how most pop songs affect me). Good production all around. I think I may try the Ozone sofware for mastering some of my work; how does it work out for you?

.. seems being ambiguous and short .. helps your play count

notions/meanings behind this piece, if you like?

Ozone 3 is excellent sw/AU plug-in.. and very easy to use... great results very fast...works for me and I've hardly strayed far off the mastering presets really... I like the results.

Recondite periphrasis &mdash 10/24/07 - 07:12:39 AM
When I was younger I kept a notebook of obscure, archaic and obsolete words and tried to use as many of them as possible in all my letters and correspondences as a matter of principle. Until I realised I was just making a pretentious foozle of myself.

You certainly know how to put together a fulgent song structure. Nice guitar mixture here and a contumelious set of worderies.

[ Reply to This ]
LOL .. &mdash 10/24/07 - 07:27:59 AM
..well 10 mins of dictionary looking up .. and all I can say is: "glad you understand".

I was worried it might be considered a pretentious act ..
and people thought I had finally gone up my own R's ..
neither of which is true.

Hence, I felt the "ostentatiously trivial" line was worth
keeping.

Still can't find "gullible" in the dictionary .. lol ;o)

[ Reply to This ]
&mdash 10/24/07 - 07:49:17 AM
Of course "gullible" is in the dictionary:

gu'llible (a.) capable of or prone to being turned into a large flappy aquatic bird

(n.) person who squawks and eats discarded chips off the pavement (from Old French 'goule' - throat)

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks very much Jason .. &mdash 10/25/07 - 03:25:11 PM
..glad you enjoyed the idea and song .. "stuff" .. lol ..
surprisingly, it wasn't just a dummy title .. it was in fact an intentional title .. and was about 'material things' .. but, I cannabalised that idea a bit ..and used some of the spirit or notions in my xmas post "remember december", so
I had to think of something fresh and interesting to try
for this tune lyric wise... no harm done .. it was really
hard to sing "stuff" without creasing up with laughter and
making everyone else giggle too. :o)

deserved &mdash 10/24/07 - 05:18:22 PM
Re: your forum post about the hight scores... I'm not going to be of much help in getting you much down on the list;) Even though you say it is not a finished product, it has such qualities that in my opinion deserves a vote around 10/9/8/9.

Very cool to use "expired" English words. The production, composition and arrangement sounds like something I easily could hear on a mainstream radio station. And I mean that as a complement:)

[ Reply to This ]
Thank you Thor &mdash 10/25/07 - 04:34:01 AM
thanks very much, firstly, your opinion and encouragement is greatly appreciated...and for responding to my post.

In danger of labouring my point .. (and of course
I don't want to dictate what people do.. it's a free place) and I am not of course hugely upset over this either ..lol - just thought I'd express my opinion .. seemed appropriate with this song, although I'm not acusing anyone of "waxing
lyrical" either)..

I won't argue your first 3 scores (very subjective).. but I would have gone lower on the final score, simply stating it was, like you mention, (only due to?) "not up to song length yet" (incomplete etc) for a song to be heard on the radio in this genre etc. No harm in that .. gives better possibility
for 'headroom' .. and makes this post more relative to other
peoples completed songs.

That is an important aspect and crux of my point .. I sit in the camp of 'you shouldn't have to post completed works all the time just to get feedback or 'fit in' with the rating schemes).

I've toyed with the idea of creating a pseudo account and
bombing myself ..lol.. but then 'some' may think I use it to
inflate my ratings later .. can't win lol.

I think my conclusion is I'll just have to try to remember in future to disable ratings on works I feel are really 'unfinished' (I mean here clearly way too short .. sections missing), I'd be more comfortable with that and feel will have no significant effects on any 'exposure' aspect.

No biggie.
I didn't want my point on the thread to appear like a
publicity stunt either .. there's always that danger too.

PS. Perhaps you missed, I did make 'links' in the description to make it quicker to get the gist of the meaning of the obsolete words and the even the idiom "wax lyrical".... no painful cosmetic beauty treatments here,

Really clever idea, &mdash 10/27/07 - 09:46:45 AM
and you carry it off well. This is a bit like 'Alice in Wonderland', except your words meant something before, and now they don't, whereas in "Jabberwocky", they didn't really mean anything when they were written, and now some of them do. Curiouser and curiouser. I like the 'yeah..' thrown in there, like you just are tossing of all of this high sounding stuff like it's so easy for you.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks .. &mdash 10/27/07 - 01:38:08 PM
. it wasn't that hard. The idea came .. I searched for
some 'obsolete English words' .. viola! .. then choosing
the ones I liked while trying to remain within the
general flavour of the song. I'm no expert in anything ..
does one need to be? It's just an idea ...glad you liked
it.

Also glad you liked the 1st yeah's .. a bit of 'attitude' can add a little fun to the singing/delivery .. in fact all the 'yeah's placement are from the original lyrics/song conception .. I justified to myself keeping the harmonised 'yeah's as representing me/anyone 'waxing lyrical'..

And of course any "yeah"ing is a nice contrast to all the
other often taken as or quite likely to be taken as 'pompous words'.... you can't beat a good 'yeah', yeah? ;o)

Very Catchy tune &mdash 11/01/07 - 08:47:03 PM
I love the currency your music brings. Vocals are always strong, the guitars are fantastic. Your stuff is some of my favorite on this site. Just a couple of things that caught my attention. The vocals seemed a bit too compressed, the sparkle seemed a tid distorted Maybe a tiny bit less push on the maximizer. But really GB! Out Standing! Thanks for sharing.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks very much John .. &mdash 11/05/07 - 02:31:27 PM
.. too kind, I'm very flattered you acredit me so.. and thanks too for the heads-up on the vocal compression: it's probably in the recording stage itself (rather than mastering .. although I'll watch the maximiser more closely too) .. if I recall, I did use more comp than usual .. really due to the up close softer 'smouchy' verses .. and then having to 'hop up' and belt the 'yeahs' .. even with backing rapidly half a metre away from the mic, I needed to compress quite a bit to not peak...darn that Rode NT1-A .. it's too good .. and I'm far from used to its responsiveness... and I'm far from a 'true' vocalist in my mind still... it's a slog and a chore.
